I guess it's a matter of preference, but I don't know why anyone would consider this an issue. There are several inexpensive music notation programs that you can use. The midi files I've imported into my projects have always included dynamics and other expression I created in my original score. I've never had any issues. If I need to tweak the midi tracks I actually think it's easier to use the PRV. I'm using Finale Allegro right now but I've also used a relatively inexpensive shareware program called Mozart for years and it is excellent. I would actually prefer that Cakewalk focus on other things and not waste their time on a notation feature.

This thread caused me to search for the comment by Cakewalk's Alex Westner in a SONAR 8.5 thread, in which he stated that Cakewalk was quite aware of what needed to be done to improve the Staff View, but did not have it as a priority at that time. It was a reassuring post for those of us who feel an improved Staff View is a high priority, and I was going to quote it (again) here. Today, I cannot find that post! For the first time in awhile, my confidence that this will be addressed has been shaken.

JClosed -if you need it- buy a notation program on top of it. As I said - notation in X1 has to be up to par with previous versions, but I just do not want to pay more for Sonar for something I rarely use. I do think that there are more users like me. I rather have Sonar for a lower price than Cubase etc., and let the people that really need a full blown notation pay $200,- for the "notation expansion". In practice however, it is just as easy to buy Sonar and -if you need it- buy a notation program on top of it. What you fail to understand is that having a notation program is not the same thing. I have Sibelius but it doesn't allow me to COMPOSE WITH NOTATION INSIDE SONAR.

As I have said before, Sonar has been re-marketed for the hobbyist which is why they don't develop pro features instead adding Pro Channel (which is redundant at best for pro users) and Microsoft Silverlight (which dumbs the program down for beginners). So don't count on things such as notation or video improvements.

Actually, before Pro Audio and Sonar, Cakewalk was a notion program designed to compose by manually editing notes on the staff. That was why I bought it many years ago and largely how I have used it to date. Yes, they have changed direction (a few times, it seems as many of you have noted on the forum), but that doesn't excuse them for their half-*ssed execution of staff view to date. I've used Cakewalk since the version 2 in the DOS days and there were no staff notation view. Cakewalk had always been a "sequencer" and not a "notation software" even back then.

If I remember correctly they added notation in the mid 90's when they came out with their first Windows 3.1 version. Of course it's been largely ignored since then.

It seems as though many Sonar users who like to use the staff to create midi events (but also need multitrack recording and editing) have found a solution similar to mine. It was good hear of other solutions as well. Its just too bad there is a need to discuss other programs to supplement the DAW we all seem to love. I'm looking forward to the day when Cakewalk/Roland regains my trust and earns the loyalty that so many of us have displayed over the decades by putting staff view users back on their "priority" list.

The "Staff" views on all DAWs are only suitable for "semi pro" "hobbyist". If you are dead serious you will fork out for Sibeliuis or Finale. Semi-pro hobbyst??? That's not true! Are you a "pro" composer? Do you compose based on the track view? Piano roll? C'mon I'm an "old school" professional composer, I still use staff sheet scores when orchestrating on the piano, I started with Cakewalk with its DOS version (then Cake for Windows came, WOW!) and it was a sequencer that need a large staff sheet (paper) for a composer / orchestrator like me to be useful. When STAFF VIEW came it was a great relief since I could arrange directly in the sequencer. I always used a different notation program (finale or encore) for printing out sheets, but for composing I still need written music. Do you really think taht every composer can create a multi part arrangement out of teh piano roll view? Seriouslly? I found this post since now I expanding an old composition (film score) to add 2 aditional minutes with added beckground parts. I need to "see" in the scort (chart) if the new lines work with the previous voicings. I need a full screen staff sheet for that. AND I CAN'T USE SNAP SETTINGS in X1e like I used to in 6 and 8.5, it just doesn't work. this is a real step backwards since I can do taht sequencing on finale. Anybody know how to set SNAP settings in staff view actually? dd

I just find it rather interesting that there are people here who seem to think that it would cost an arm and a leg to actually FIX what is already there. And, yes, I know about the excuse, er, reason that it was only for exporting certain files into some other notation software...

Staff view doesn't remember or "respect" the global snap settings and behaves weird, changing it's own snap settings when closing and reopening staff view, etc.

Oh great... more staff view discussion. Maybe Cakewalk should just come out and state "we have no intention of changing the staff view beyond how it functions today + MusicXML export in expanded". Period, end of story. Then all of those lost souls holding out hope that SV will be improved in the future can move on w/ their lives, and all of those continuously typing "if you need notation than use Finale or Sibelius" can save themselves some typing....

Well, since we are on this topic, this will be a perfect time to do a request for an improvement for something that seems to work..as if..it was meant for more than just an export view. Gee, maybe one can imagine a time when one could fully customize the GUI to this level that you could delete entire views you don't like.
