Whatcha think? Thoughts on PC2A T-Type Leveling Amplifier
I just threw the new PC-LA on a vocal track in a tune I'm getting ready to mix. Holy crap!! It sounds really nice! I'm looking forward to getting down and dirty with it and seeing what it will do. What do you all think?

From someone who has no prior experience with any LA2A equipment- real, or virtual- it is a really really good compressor. Very easy to use and extra tricks available with a little tweaking. Right up my street. Will be interested to get opinions from others who own NI, UAD, WAVES versions.

What makes this compressor different from other compressors? FBB, your post intrigues me as I also play guitar.

I'm no expert but to my ears it tends to lift the quiter levels rather than tame the peaks. Boosting the quieter levels rather than cutting the peaks and then increasing gain, if that makes sense. I know what I mean but I'm not very good at explaining it.... sorry.

maximumpower What makes this compressor different from compressors? FBB, your post intrigues me as I also play guitar. There's lots of information about exactly that here: http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/ProChannel-Modules/PC2A-T-Type-Leveling-Amplifier.aspx Check out the "Modeled to a T" and "Smooth Operator" sections. The "Modeled to a T" section has a "read more" section that goes into even finer detail. In a nutshell this is a detailed model of an electro-optical compressor that uses a circuit made up of an electro-luminescent panel and photocells to control gain reduction. It creates a compression mechanism that is entirely dependent on the incoming program material with automatic attack and release times. It's also frequency dependent. Obviously the tubes lend to the sound as well. It's quite a different animal than many other types of dynamics processors (FET, VCA, etc). This is why it's so revered as a vocal, bass, and guitar (to name a few) compressor.

I just put together a quick on/off comparision test. The track contains two 'raw' rhythm guitars - there is no processing on them at all. I bounced down about a minute for you to listen to. I've split it into six 10 second parts, each separated by a small gap, and I've balanced up the levels to give a fair test. The Leveller is OFF in parts 1, 3, and 5; and ON in parts 2, 4 and 6. I'm hearing the same as FBB mentions above (post #7), what do you think: CAKEWALK LEVELLER TEST

Has anyone got the IKM White2A and this one as well? Would getting the PC2A be redundant? Any thoughts appreciated. I just got the Klanghelm DC8C and didn't realize this was out today.

As promised, I find myself in the somewhat embarassing position of owning a ton of these emulations....which is odd becuase I don't really use them that much. In any case, I threw together a quick comparison of a snippit of acoustic guitar. The zip contains the dry track and the track through the PC2A, UAD LA2A, T-racks White 2A, NI's VC2A and finally (the closest thing I have to the actual hardware) a Chameleon Labs 7802 which is an optical tube compressor like the LA2A. *sigh*...how did I end up with all of those....I think I may have some sort of problem... Anyway, guitar is a Taylor 816ce mic'd through Gefell m300's, Sebatron Tube pres out to an Aurora 16. Files are 32bit 48khz wave files. The mediocre playing is my own. Get it here: www.fade.net/LA2A-comparison.zip Dean Oh, and Middleman - super jealous of your real one. Just bought the Taylor tho and if I picked up another peice of hardware this quickly my wife would beat me to death in my sleep.

After running comparisons on this plugin over the last hour I give Cakewalk an A. It's easily as good as the UAD version and I like the needle response better. Good job guys. It's not as articulate as the real thing so I'll keep my hardware for tracking purposes mind you. It is however, a really good plug in for the price especially at $39 for the first 1000 users. Think about that, $39000. I should be writing plugins.

Yes, Very Good plugin,it instantly trimmed some nastiness,I had with a track with [cough cough]SSD 4,[will get to BFD2 when I have time]and made it sound......I hesitate to say it.....Analogue!!
I'm just wondering why it took so long,to have an LA2A clone in X1? It obviously doesn't matter,as they have now....again Very good.[especially for 38.46 AUD!]
