Update:

I just got the mic... And oh, does it sound nice. I pick up no noise from this thing- and I'm recording in my room! This thing is an awesome find, I thank the original poster 1,000-fold! I highly suggest this to anyone who's on a tight budget (arn't we all?) and/or beginners... As I am myself a beginner. Well, cheers and goodluck to anyone else who buys it!

Edit: Ugh, I am at lack of a stand as well.

As for SD condensers in the very cheap price range, MXL 603 and 604 are great.

Thanks for the tip on these. They receive pretty high marks on Harmony Central too.

Thanks.

I must say I think I like this mic for my voice better than my tube replaced Rode NTK. What a secret pot of gold!

What tube did you replace the stock one with?

I'm still kinda confused about the "branding" on this mic. Nowhere on the packaging does it say MXL. Why is there a consensus that this is an MXL mic and not an MCA mic? And who the heck is MCA?

The way the story goes in this thread (at least how I understand it), MCA was the Mars Music house brand for MXL.

Dave, have you put this mic through it's paces with real-world recording?

Lance seems impressed, and from the literally 2 minutes I've messed with it, it seems to be pretty nice sounding.

Unfortunately, no. I had hoped to get farther along on my current project, but got kinda bogged down this weekend.

From the quick vocal test I did the other night, the SP-1 strikes me as very promising. I'll let you know when I do some tracking with it.

I did some tracking for a few songs in a project Im working on, and I was very very happy with the mic. I sweep the low end out a lot like I always do, but I then immediatley loved the smooth sound and didnt feel a need to do any other eq adjustments. I fiddled with the eq a little, but it wasnt really necessary. It just sounded smooth, and this was on 3 different voices.

I did some misc. percussion and bongos with it. It handled transients pretty nicely.. they were low level but it was clean and clear. Worked well on acoustic guitar too.... I really don't like a hyped hi end on acoustic, so it worked out pretty well.

I'v got a real world update on the $40.00 beast...I tracked a young man with somewhat of a strident harsh overtone in his voice. I tried an AT 4033($300) a M-Audio tube mic ($700) and the $40 dollar mca sp-1. First let me say the mca started off giving a low 60 cycle type hum...I squeezed and shook it- reset the mic cable..(don't try this at home kids I AM A PROFFESSIONAL) and the hum stopped. The best sounding mic on this voice was the mca sp-1. The AT sounded harsh...the sputnik was detailed but the mca was SMOOTH...go figure. When he heard the way it "liked" his voice he went home and ordered on for his live performances.

You know, the thought crossed my mind too. To be honest though, I've never taken a large-diaphragm condenser on the stage. Mostly, the concerns are about durability. I know, I know, what's $40 to risk when the sound is right... but if it breaks, then it's a real hassle. The SM58 (or Beta 58) has been my weapon of choice to pack in my mic bag for the road, mostly because it's rock-solid, and it gives a predictable performance in a situation where you have so much less control over the sound. Still, the thought crossed my mind...

main problem for live would be feedback, unless you're doing the traditional bluegrass semi-circle-into-a-single-mic thing.

Losguy...to be honest I never thought a thing about the reliability issue of live work (maybe i should have....) but the mic is cheaper than an sm 57-58 and it sounds good. As far as feedback is concerned...never entered my mind either. I guess I was fixated on the quality of the mic and not the logistics of live work. Anyway time will tell. My main concern for recomending it was phantom power, because these guys are used to dynamics..plug and play.

Looks like they still have more coming in case anyone wants to try them.

Man, PSSL would be smart to set up production runs on their own with the maker in China. This thing could be a cult hit... like the next SM58 or something.

I'm jumping on the bandwagon. Given, I'm not accustomed to quality mics. Mostly those that are just adequate for a bar band. But this thing is sweet. It picks up everything in the vicinity, including the parrot flapping its wings, sparrows out on the patio, the neighbor's barking dog. Very clean, very clear. And for that price? Unbelievable

I finally got to do some tracking with this mic. (Not on me, just some other peeps.) Like you Lance, I did need to sweep out the low end (with a highpass), but I found that it needed a lot less "work" on everything else than my other LDC (an MXL). I'ts nice to have another LDC in the arsenal now, and such a nice one too! Whod'a thunk it, for just 40 buckaroonies?

losguy or Lance - at what frequency range do you start the low-end sweepout? Just curious.

Thanks...
