yeah dude yep says he doesnt consider these a vocal mic, but I was producing a record yesterday at paramount, 11 hours in the room, neuman U87's through an SSL consel. I recorded today on SP1 and my ears were instantly happy. I was talking mics to the engineer, and he has worked witha lotta cats there at paramount studios, and he said it before me, what I always say. It doesnt really matter these days on the gear too much, but the song quality and production is everything. Well, with a mic like the SP1 I have to agree. It just sounds great, period.

I think I'll order up another pair if Jim's mods are reasonably priced! Corey Hey Corey, Can you point me in the general direction to get info about the mods you're referring to? Thanks! -mm

ORIGINAL: dug dog Corey: Did you ever get the low-down on modding these babies? Yep! Haven't done it yet. With a MINIMUM of equalization, they sound great already, so... I really like the top end, in comparison to the Sennheiser 421's I'm using on a Voiceover project I've been doing. Much less harsh in that area, and I can run them with a LOT less gain than the Sennheisers needed. Check into the Yahoo Microphone Mods group for full info. You need to join as a member to see the files, but it's free, and they don't spam. Corey

hehe is it a 414? If so, that is the mic that people noticed some qualities of this mic having. I did as well. It has more woof and low end, but that is easily swept away with a low pass filter.

ORIGINAL: Lanceindastudio low pass filter Anti-woofer (aka high-pass filter) works wonders for this mic. That smooth high-end is really hard (if not impossible) to get with EQ on "some other" mics.

I'd need a step by step how to guide with pictures! I think a portion of it is REALLY simple (as I recall) and mostly involves just cutting two resistors (caps? I can't recall) out of the circuit path. REALLY simple. I'm going to mod mine sometime over the winter. If it works out well, I'll post a detailed description (with pics) on how to make the mods. My biggest concern right now is the EXTREMELY flimsy shell of them, and how it rings a bit. I have an idea for a physical mod to it as well, and will be testing that shortly... cuz there ain't no soldering involved! LOL Corey

Just got my mikes today. I opened one up and was pleased to see that all the components are labelled, so identifying and removing a cap and a resistor as mentioned in the yahoo discussion should be fairly easy. As for the shells, yeah, they ARE pretty flimsy. Under what conditions are they ringing? I'm hoping to use these things as drum overheads, amongst other things, but won't be able to test them for a week or two.

They are a bit flimsy. I also ran into a minor issue with one of mine where in I had a slight ground hum...minor buzz, I unscrewed the housing just to check out if something obvious was goofy and just scraping the paint on the threads was enough to clean it up, 100 % except for that one minor issue.

I hear the ring during snare hits when they're set up as overheads. I'll do my test this weekend and let you know how it turns out... it's a $5 fix if it works... and you could do 100 of them for that $5! LOL Corey

Have you SEEN the pics of my studio? LOL Actually the currently uploaded pics are terrible. It doesn't much look like that anymore. The potential solution is to put a heavy aluminum tape (like you'd use for duct work) inside the thin barrel of the mic. It's going to be a pain, but if I can get decent coverage (even 50%) it should damp the mic enough to make it a worthwhile effort. Corey

Corey, That's a good idea. So along those lines, if you find that you don't get enough damping mass form the aluminum, you could also go for lead. Here's a link for lead tape: http://www.vandykes.com/product/cg140005/traditional-lead-tape-1-4-x-33- It would go on probably as easy/hard as the aluminum tape would. There's probably a local outlet that would have it, maybe even a hardware store.

Please use care when putting any conductive foil inside. It won't stick forever as the adhesive will most assuredly break down after a few years. Loose conductors and pre amps and Phantom power may not be a good combination. You may be able to place some thin closed cell foam wrapping along the shell or thicker open cell foam directly on the circuit board to wedge in along the case internally. Actually... the better idea would be to just use a shock mount.
