I realize now my earlier offer was probably eyeroll worthy... and certainly is. I just figured if help was needed... well I usually have my eyeballs somewhere near the forum even if I ain't posting and am usually up ridiculously early in the morning. Personally I think scook would be a good candidate for sorting out legit questions from... uh... weirdness in the Sonar forums. Highly knowledgeable/no guff yet friendly/helpful type of dude. Not sure if he'd be into it though. CraigB would probably rock the CH pretty well especially considering his previous mod experience and Rain has an even keel on him (but I may be biased because... well Canucker metalheads... lol). Old55 seems like another good CH option.

Meh... I'm thinking about this way too much. I guess it's 'cause I like this place... or I'm weird... or sumthin'. ;-p

CraigB all the way.

Me, really? Well, I do have an idea for the perfect avatar... ;)

Sorry, but the forum is done. When a person get spammed by someone who thinks they have more Rights, or is mad about something, and thinking I am going to be accused of something on this forum, this forum is going and will go to the FEDS. That is from past experience of too many a-holes getting by with what they do, and for one, I am not going to tolerate it anymore in the Coffee House or from anyone in this Country.

There are reasons for this, and too bad!

I really doubt that all the cool people here are all of a sudden going to turn into an AK47-toting SWAT team dispensing vigilante justice to all who cross their paths. This forum has quite a few people with the power to do just that, and it hasn't happened yet. Don't see why it would happen in the future.

The one exception is the spammers, and there you ni fact do want a bunch of AK47-toting SWAT teams anyway.

You're probably right. It's an occupational hazard and one that anyone nominated will have to think about before accepting the post. Furthermore, if a new moderator is a long-time user, (s)he'll have friends and allies on the forums who will defend him/her, which in turn will lead to alignments among users, and flame wars, and hard feelings when those battles are deleted or whatever. The more I think about this, the less I like the idea of users being moderators.

Well I know you're joking but I'd hope they realize the weight your name seems to carry. I've been contemplating PMing you a tale about a convo I had recently with a retailer (a surprisingly knowledgeable one). This is not the time or place but basically we started chatting about stuff and I mentioned how you had gotten more officially involved with Cake after the buyout. It really seemed to strike a chord with the guy. I'm pretty new to all this as you probably know so I just know you from here and some of the vids around. When I start talking to people in the meatworld and they go "Really? Craig? Niiice." that, to me, seems pretty darned good for the brand.

Every forum has rules.  What is unfortunate is when those rules are broken and nothing happens.  Some speak of their right to freedom of speech to say whatever they want.  In a public forum, the TOS is posted to let everyone know what the general limits are.  We can't just say anything we feel if it goes against those guidelines.  Why is this not obvious?  So, moderators are needed in this regard to try to keep things civil.

We either abide by the TOS, work to change it, or leave.  Acting against it just shows no respect for the forum members IMO.
I agree with Ed that it really is up to Cakewalk to decide these parameters.  I also agree with Bat that the moderator will become the whipping boy.  This new direction will take some time to work out the bugs.

RE: Whipping boy. That's why I was mentioning Mods should have the option to switch to a nondescript Moderator account to deal with issues. If they do it under their regular handles it can cause more flaminess and nonsense than the original problem.

I do find it weird how a forum about a piece of software has managed to cause such severe flamewars and grudges. Especially amongst such a seemingly nice bunch of dudes. A bit of light, thoughtful moderation could certainly help prevent things from getting to that point... I hope.

any moderator, will become a whipping boy.

Seriously, how many times can you think of that these forums required the kind of heavy-handed moderation that would make someone a whipping boy?

Now, I have been in forums where this was an issue. I took over as moderator of the Political Party forum at Harmony Central because all previous moderators had tried to be conscientious and fair, which is impossible in that context. So they ran away screaming and no one else would do it. If the Political Forum vitriol level ranged from 1 to 10 (most vitriol), the worst the CW forums have ever dished up is about 0.000000013.

Again Willy can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the motivation here is to use moderation to sanitize the forums, but to organize the forums for maximum effectiveness, keep out the spammers, gently steer things in the right direction if things go off-course, and not have the community think no one is listening. I've never gotten the feeling anyone at CW felt the forums needed to be hosed down with Lysol and ammonia.

(By the way, I solved the whipping boy problem in the poli forum simply by promising that my moderation would be arbitrary and inconsistent. Whenever someone complained I was being arbitrary and inconsistent, I'd tell them that a) I was merely fulfilling my promise, and b) I didn't care what they thought. Eventually people stopped complaining. Most people liked the moderation style anyway. Forums are not to be taken too seriously.)

I was gonna list craigb in the "Who would you hang out with" thread because he reminds me of some of my buddies on the sillier sites I hang out on. But I figured if we ever did meet in person we'd probably just look at our respective gear for ten minutes then end up playing video games or posting silly crap on the internet... all of which we could simply do over the internet anyway. lol

This is basically 100% the idea. Improve organization, minimize spam and optimize how feedback and problems are delivered to Cakewalk staff.  (I wish I had another cool 'z' word to use).

Here is a thought to not make moderators feel like they're tied to the whipping post (sorry couldn't help it). What if community moderators didn't ban anybody but instead only locked/moved threads, edited subjects to indicate solved and encouraged posters to provide more info where/when necessary? A ban would have to still come from somebody at Cakewalk after it has been discussed with the moderator group.

Yah, have you ever been on the Reaper or Gearslutz forums? Whew boy! Comparatively we're quite well behaved.

That said I'll mention that I almost always post in the SONAR forum...even when Off Topic. The peeps there are ones I trust and I think marking a post as "O/T" usually gets it past getting moved and most importantly gets me information I trust from peers I've interacted with for...well heck for 15 years or so!

Also, whoever said the Coffee House should be renamed "Cake Hole" gets a ROTFLMAO with snorted milk. Priceless.

And if we're given nomadic moderation tasks I would just point out that I'm a paragon of civility.

That's kind of what I was getting at earlier. Mods steer discussions, fix problems and neutralize blatant abuse when they see it. Administrators (like you) make the big decisions like permanent bans and completely deleting threads. That way all it takes is one of you guys to check your logs every day or so and spend five minutes cleaning house.

In the software forum there are about 20+ threads a day from people or companies noting new products or deals (which is great, btw) which will drown out the hardware and DAW threads that are often very informative.

This is a good point - going forward I'm not sure that we'll actually allow these types of posts on our forum. Let's face it, KVR is a much better source of information for this type of info and we've already seen a few incidents with representatives of another company getting into arguments with users on our forum. The DAW and hardware sections are useful complements to our products. The software forum is starting to smell a lot more like a spam bin/advertising bulletin board.

There is a lot of good discussion around software that is valid and helpful to users.  Would it make sense to limit the scope of conversation to discussion about compatibility/tools/features of a software product and not allow advertisements or promotions?

I frequent 2 threads - Sonar X3 and Gear>Software.

I disagree with the 'Smelly Spam BB' comment.

I suggest 'deal' posts are not excessive (~10 a day) and mostly from an individual rather than Vendors. Regardless, they assist me and appear to be from a wider source than just KVR. They also either prompt or start out as discussion wrt pertinence with Cakewalk product - that'd be lost by sending people over to KVR. Furthermore, sifting deals from discussion is simple.

Some people appear to have an issue with the individual. No problems my end - keep up your efforts.

I've seen one incident of a blowout / callout of a vendor troll. I chose to ignore.

Moderation should handle any issues but I'm a +1 for deals to remain.
