Lots of people agree with you. Many of the things you mention were discussed on this forum even before the non-subscription subscription model. I assume that like me, their attitude has become 'what is the point'. Either that or they have actually left the forum and/or Sonar. I cannot believe that some users actually like paying for the 'privilege' of being beta testers. Seems like the boiling frog scenario to me. Personally I dislike even more that Sonar features are added in incomplete form and released. The features may be fixed several updates later or they may be simply ignored and wither on the vine. The X-series Skylight interface touted 'touch' as the cannot do without feature de jour. Anything been done to actually make touch usable ? But everyone had to learn a new workflow. Matrix view ... hyped as a major new element in the X-series and an excellent idea if done properly. Anything been done to that ? Z3ta+2... could be an excellent synth but years since an update. I paid extra for that. DimPro ? any recent updates to the flagship synth? I won't even get into Rapture Pro. Cakewalk Sound Center...excellent idea but practically useless...still. CCC...several updates and still not really primetime. Drum Replacer...how many Sonar users record live drums ? Patch Points... really great feature but I am not sure I am liking the implementation. Do the same for MIDI. Start Menu ? Style Dials ? Colors ? So we are what, 10 updates into the new model. I really do not see a major change in Cake's philosophy. Sonar could be so much better with the right focus. I am still on the fence about renewing. I suppose it depends on what happens in the final 2 updates. I find myself thinking about what else I could get with the $200.

It seems to me some folks are just negative nannies. I doubt they would be happy if CW gave it away free. I know I can spend $15/month on less than nothing. To get Platinum at that price will be heaven. I spent $30/month to get the top of the line version this year and haven't even had a twinkling of a second thought.

Paid for the entire year upfront, and have gotten nothing, completely zero, of benefit to me. Unless, possibly, there is something under the hood toward making things more stable. I'm at the G revision and see no benefit to even using the free updates to H J I K . I'm still not sure if all the user interface weaknesses are Cakewalk's failings, or possibly microsoft's failings, but if the latter then it is stil CW's lousy programming or failure to review what the interface actually is that gives us what we have. There are so many things that many other sofware/audio companies do better, so it is not even as if they must be great at design .. just imitate, please. The essential thing is discipline: DO NOT have 17 different menu structures, or preference structures, for a user to wade through. It is a huge mess of a program that would benefit by some weight-watcher strategies. There are still two reasons I use Sonar: CAL and the weakness of Cubase on Windows 7 with visual things.

Noel Borthwick [Cakewalk I think its even better than that. At the end of completion 12 consecutive payments (either monthly or prepaid annually) you own everything you got until that point. eg if you stop after 16 consecutive months you own everything until that point. IOW once you cross the 12 consecutive month watermark you own the software AND all consecutive months past that date that you continue on as a member. You can choose to go monthly if you prefer after the 12 month period and you will continue to own the software. However note that if you break the cycle at that point and restart you will only own the consecutive period upto the point where you discontinued. A new countdown will start afresh from when you rejoin. Here is an example where a customer signs up for 12 months and then discontinues for 2, signs on for another two, misses a month and then signs on again for 12 months. You can see that anything delivered in months 5-9 will not be available to you due to the lapse in membership (7 and 8 are treated as monthly only). However after signing up for 12 consecutive months again you get to own that period again, and so on.. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 1 2 3 4 - - 7 8 - 10 11 12 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 <----own 16 months----------------> <----own 12 months-----> To summarize it's definitely beneficial to stay on as a member for consecutive months since you get to permanently own what you paid for. Our model is far superior to others in this regard and rewards customers who stay with us.

I'm finding myself agreeing with the feature bloat comments sadly.. Yup definately time for the slim fast diet, and finish all those unfinished symphonies laying around underloved... Guess many were hoping for this from the beginning.

To me it's great that the Cakewalk CTO stepped in to clarify the way things work, and yes it is (by far) the best implementation of this type of business model I've ever been aware of. Cakewalk really does seem to actually care about their customers (a rarity today) and have found a way to be extremely accommodating and rewarding to loyal customers while still being able to get paid themselves. Well done indeed.

Regression bugs will always have priority (with the new features), this is the norm and there is nothing wrong with that. However ultimately ^^ what you are saying ^^ means we have to accept old bugs will rarely or never get fixed, as there will be hardly any time to do so if new features keep pouring out... you know the same old issues that customers have been banging on about for years now, and really the last 10 months pretty much confirms that imho. The model could have worked brilliantly if the bug backlog from X3E to X1 (and far far earlier from what I understand) were mostly resolved, or this was a brand new product, sadly there is too crap from past history to clear up... And effectively ignoring most of this is building up a house with flimsy foundations that will eventually fall over ....please remember what I wrote here in case it happens. Also if there are to be no periodic/regular feature freezes/stability releases, then those of us who don't want to be, will just be condemned to a beta testing roller coaster ride... Rolling backwards or forwards (if able) to whatever middle ground we might be able to cope with. This profile of customer (who is just looking for stability) will eventually pack their bags imho. I don't particularly like writing this, but that's the truth as I see it. Sorry...

There is a fun compromise option. There must be always one and only one new feature in development, and it should be the leader of this forum feature request list. All other development resources should go to improve existing functionality. In this case it would be stable enough, and nobody could say that feature requests are not implemented.

I'm not so sure it's much different than what we have now. In my view there should be at least one full time developer dedicated to working full time on the backlog before Platinum got released, and he/she should not be distracted by anything else (e.g. other projects, regression fixes with new features or new features). If there is no developer available then a job should be advertised. Bugs should be fixed, abandoned half baked functionality should be made whole and obvious missing workflow tweaks put in place (no major functionality).

I saw a sign that said: "You have reached the end of the internet! There is no more internet!" Like the end of a road. Imagine the day when there are no more new features to add in relation to the competition. The day when Sonar has every possible feature any music creator or collaborator could ever want or need & the software is rock solid. What would the music world ( as a whole) think of Sonar then?

To post to the original topic. yea, it has been good for me. Are there occasional bugs and are there things I am not nuts about, sure.
All in all though, I feel it is the best Sonar yet and I do like the pay as you go and keep after a year.
Now the real question is, will we early adopters still get the cut-rate price after the initial year is up?

They'll probably even give you a throne in the middle of the coders' room to announce edicts from through a loud-hailer. Keep at it, victory is so close, I can smell it.

Stability has been problematic for me. I like the new features but a couple of the builds caused me a lot of crashes or odd issues. The good part is they seem to be resolved in one or 2 builds. I still can't get my latency as low in Sonar as I do in Reaper, Protools, or Studio Live 3. Maybe this build.

You are completely missing the point that there does not seem to be enough time to fix all this. Even you made comments like this before (chicken and egg etc). As far as "new features keep pouring out" - well that's what I've been seeing over the last 10 months, sorry if I'm mistaken. I'm also NOT saying you are saying this, otherwise I would not have written the word "ultimately", that means "effectively" if you like.

Man, you'd think by reading some of the comments that the software today is so riddled with defects and bad design that it's a wonder any music is actually produced! It's a stunningly great piece of software imho, equal in quality to any other software with equivalent complexity out there, with a production model in place will put Sonar ahead of its competitors in time. I personally do not care for the idea of "stability releases." All of the releases to date have in some measure been stability releases with the bonus of new features and content. This is just good business and is pretty standard throughout the application software industry. It's also pretty clear at this point that Cakewalk is not super interested in the idea of bug fix only updates, and they likely have evidence to justify that position. I find it exceedingly refreshing that we're arguing about update priorities at all at this point in the Platinum lifecyle. If Cake had decided to keep on keepin' on with Sonar X4, the end of the fix/update cycle would have been reached with the Everett update. Not to mention that no new features would have been released in any of the updates, only fixes. We'd be looking at another six months at least before X5 came out, and I'd have to pay the upgrade price to get them. So yeah, this new model rocks. Hard.

TBH I seriously doubt that some of the people who obsess about bug fixes actually make any music themselves :) Music is the whole point of buying and using this software, not keeping track of bugs. Write some songs or talk about how you are making music with SONAR instead, which is the primary objective of this forum. It will be way more valuable to others than obsessing about the software.

Sorry, don't get it. I can just skip over posts I find repetitive. calling people names and having to stop using the forum seems absurd. Hey, you can just block them. It is just a forum, for gosh sakes. I find it hard to get real emotional about forum. I don't even know these people why get all worked up? I can't really get all bent out of shape concerning DAW software(there are a lot of choices that will work). I save that stuff for my wife and kids
