Hi there:) I love to work with Cakewalk since 1986, think it was Shareware at that time, before I had C64 with Steinberg Software... Today I'm so happy, that I've never changed my DAW!! (OK sometimes I took a look at Cubase and Logic:) ) --> Just paid!!! Bassman.

I have to thank Cakewalk for offering a $99US annual subscription (which somehow transformed to a magical and lower-than-expected $119 Canadian). Given that US currency is so strong right now, and as a Canadian who faced a 40% premium on the purchase, I was all set to resign to not renewing - especially at the $149 level ($209 Canadian, for 1 year, paid in advance). Thanks to the offer, I immediately went online and purchased. And that is the result of you considering your clientele and economic circumstances carefully, something most companies, it seems, don't do when price setting. KEv

Will there by anything new on retaining colors for a track - so when a new clip is started it retained the colors assigned to the track?

streckfus To be honest, I made up my mind about renewing last fall when they incorporated Patch Points/Aux tracks. Granted, I personally benefited from that upgrade because I was involved in conversations about adding that functionality to Sonar, but to me, why that feature was implemented was even more impressive than the fact that it was implemented. Although I have no inside info, I'm quite confident that Cakewalk had absolutely no plans to implement track-to-track routing or aux tracks when they rolled out the new version last year. In fact, a few forum users were discussing how nice that functionality would be, and Cakewalk (I believe it was Noel) chimed into the conversation and pointed out that the functionality we were looking for already existed with busses. We explained use-case scenarios for how track-to-track routing could improve workflows, and a few weeks later, track-to-track routing was announced as in development, and not long after, implemented. It's obvious that while Cakewalk has their own vision for the future of their software and will do what they feel is best, they are also paying close attention to what users would like to see. I'm lucky that my request saw the light of the day, and maybe this year I won't be so lucky. But the fact that Cakewalk is taking an interactive approach to the evolution of their software is pretty freakin' awesome, as far as I'm concerned. That being said, I sure wish they'd allow an aux track to solo all tracks feeding it, just like a bus does. :) Great work, Cakewalk. Love the direction this is going, and hopefully a lot of other users get to experience the same thing I did last year when my wish list ended up under the Christmas tree. :)
That is accurate. Patch points were not planned at the start of the year although we had internally talked about it many times in the past. Its all about prioritizing the needs of users and this was the right time to do this feature once we had tackled some more pressing issues. It was also required to set the foundation for some other cool things we have planned. >>That being said, I sure wish they'd allow an aux track to solo all tracks feeding it, just like a bus does. :) You might get lucky again. It is the lottery season after all :) Hmm maybe we should have a feature request lottery!

I did wonder in December if there is enough coming in 2016 for me to renew or if I should pause for a bit, after all Platinum does so much already. I made a little wishlist to myself last year to decide what would get me off the fence. For me it came down to these 4 Update UI Seems a done deal/looks like it's in the bag :-) the rest is really workflow, MIDI Still needs love - things I need might be included in that cryptic announcement of core MIDI and audio updates ... They done good in 2015 so here's hoping engineering are ahead of us! If anyone queries what I mean - please take a look at the other DAWS out there today. If you are asking for details ... I'd really appreaciate some dedicated buttons to do common functions - such as "halving tempo/spreading out" the MIDI data in a bar so it appears to slow 50% - (which is not quite the same thing as half tempo) and also a button to double it so things might go from 8ths to 16th Oh and a copy/double pattern data along into the next bar button in the piano roll area - (I know there are already ways to do these things - but this is workflow that you will appreciate when you try it and be a little sad when it is not there). This makes general creating music and editing some variations soooo fast. (and .... Drawing MIDI data and edits still isn't as fluid as it might be - but overall it's way better than 12 months ago) Arrangement page request - (copying things into Chorus/Verse/M8 etc) I think from rereading this thread, its the no.1 request for many people right now. Yes need this 1000% can it please be there in the Q1 workflow improvements!? (pretty please). Matrix Clip view This needs some serious love. - here's hoping it gets it ... I hope/suspect the UI skinning improvements extend to here and the step sequencer too and just that will help. To massively improve the useability and workflow doesn't need to be anything fancy. I'd vote for something Project 5v2 enjoyed years ago - where you could drag across the main screen to "reveal" the grid from behind the main linear tracks - Then you can view them side by side and see the connection of patterns/loops as they "pour" themselves into the matching linear tracks - Maybe this isnt so easy to actually wire up in the code for some reason but Andrew Rossa still has P5v2 in his avatar so I know its not forgotten ! Already looks like the bakers are nailing my wishlist this year - leap of faith! - I'm in. :-) Simon

I'm not sure if this will do exactly what you're looking for, but, Ctrl+Stretching a MIDI clip in either direction will expand/compress its data, similar to the same gesture for audio clips. I forgot when this was introduced but it is a great feature....though obviously not in button form.

It's strange, I also renewed last week, and I checked right away after purchase, in Sonar - Help > About, and it said good thru 2017 . . . your post made me check again, and now it's only valid thru 17/01/2016 . . . today ! Must surely be a glitch, since my Cakewalk store account says membership valid thru Feb 2017.

We old military types don't renew. We reup! I had $199 in my 2016 budget for the annual sub for SPlat. When I saw the post re $149 as the new SPlat annual rate, I was happy to have $50 to spend elsewhere. And then the special $99 rate for this year? What did I do? Yup, marched right on down to the First Shirt's office and reupped! Thanks, Cakewalk!

I am a Cakewalk user since the DOS days. Love it and it's the DAW I know the best. But here is a question from a Canadian, regarding upgrading the SONAR X3 Professional to the Ultimate. I want to take advantage of the $99 upgrade deal. I was about to do it, until I saw the price in $175CDN. Could someone at Cakewalk kindly explain how they have arrived at this price? Today's rate: 1.00 USD = 1.45235 CAD Thank you.

Not a Cakewalk employee, but the $99 deal is not an upgrade it is a renewal of membership. I believe the upgrade to get you on the Platinum product would be more expensive. Unless you have a link to said $99 upgrade deal?

Have to say I was very skeptical too about the new business model and the Gibson takeover. As a lecturer in a Pro Tools-centric music production college, I have questioned whether I would want to switch to PT, particularly as I'm building a small commercial production studio too. However, I've not only been impressed with the monthly features like Drum Replacer, comping and the engine updates but for me now, Sonar isn't just another daw, it's something I am committed to. For mixing, writing and training it works incredibly well. If I had two requests, it would be: 1. Do something, anything!!! to the staff please... it's the one thing I came to Cakewalk midi sequencer v2 for in the 90's and it's barely changed!!! PLEASE!!! 2. Give it some live VST host functionality like Abelton + 1 for Anxiousmofo anxiousmofo...looking for a deep Matrix overhaul...will have to go to Abelton in order to get the functionality I want. I'd rather not have two DAW's, though! 3. Keep working on touch control - it's getting interesting!!! This year I have absolutely no hesitation in renewing my subscription. Keep it up guys, 2015 was a great step forward!! Gary

Is the $ to $CDN higher than expected due to Canadian tax being added on? I had a similar issue converting to UK pounds. $99 converts to £69.53 but was quoted £84 in the Cakewalk store. When I added 20% for British tax it rounded up exactly! Perhaps that's the answer? Hope this helps, Best Gary PS - Super cool blues rendition of the Beatles! Love it!

Hi Steve, yes your absolutely right, I've used it and it works well too. But it's one of those little things that should just be done like ... "bang! move on...." at the moment, there is just a little bit too much left brain/right brain going to adjust and copy etc. (the roller tool works here too). This isn't really the thread to focus on wants and wishes - I'm sure there will be one later and we have the upcoming tool in Q1 for enhancement requests (what are they letting themselves infore there?)!. For my 2pennies the piano roll window needs some dedicated quick link buttons of number of commonly used commands (Sort of like the assignable commands in the main ribbon on the front page, or an expanded range of things that pop up when you press control/T (or whatever the correct terms are!). I'm content to wait to see what comes ....

I want to take advantage of the $99 upgrade deal. I was about to do it, until I saw the price in $175CDN. Could someone at Cakewalk kindly explain how they have arrived at this price? Today's rate: 1.00 USD = 1.45235 CAD Thank you.
Love it!
Thanks Gary .. I think you are right. and thank you for listening and for the kind words. Fernando.

Silo99 Arrangement page request - (copying things into Chorus/Verse/M8 etc) I think from rereading this thread, its the no.1 request for many people right now. Yes need this 1000% can it please be there in the Q1 workflow improvements!? (pretty please).
Please check out my most recent Friday's Tip of the Week. While it's not a dedicated arranger, it accomplishes the same results and in some ways, is better because you can do "fractional arranging" easily - for example, just move the rhythm section around, just the background vocals, etc. This will become even more useful on Friday, when I upload the next tip of the week on creating a scratchpad in SONAR.

^^^ Yes do this, while not quite the same as the dedicated Arranger Track in the likes of S13, as Craig says the end result is the same, and be sure to check out this Fridays scratchpad in Sonar tip, something I am certainly looking forward to seeing. Having said that, don't stop requesting and talking about things like the arranger track and scratch pad type stuff, you never know, Cakewalk may just here you, wouldn't surprise me in the least if Cake put their own spin on these features and implement them into Sonar, but until that time, you have the next best thing to a native implementation. I could of swore it was Friday already

I have Cubase AI 8 and Studio One 3 Artist. I haven't installed any of them, I thought they will put load on my DAW PC. My question is if I install them : Will I be able to explore any good feature what my Platinum is not giving? Will I be able to utilize Chord Track, Arranger Track, Note FX, MIDI effects etc and bring the results in Sonar? Will the VSTi installed by the process of installation of these two can also be accessed from SONAR? Regards S Ghose
