IF lifetime membership meant core functionality (aux tracks, fixes, etc.) but NO add-ons (Vocal Sync, Drum Replacer, etc.) unless you bought them individually as needed, I'd probably be more inclined to stick with the current annual renewal model. Although I don't use all of those bundled features day-in and day-out, they're still nice to have. And depending on how much those would cost on their own ($99? $149? More?) things could get real expensive, real quick.

This is exactly why I don't believe they won't also change the regular monthly/yearly subscriptions to the core functionality and stop providing extras. Otherwise you're leaving your customers a lot of guessing work whether they are better off with a lifetime or monthly/yearly subscription. Plus, they would also piss off a lot of customers that are now jumping on the Lifetime deal, and then afterwards realize they are missing out on whatever extras Cakewalk would throw in the regular subscriptions. I really don't see that happening.
So my guess is that after June 1 (or maybe even on) they will also significantly lower the monthly price.

However only good things have happened since the Gibson takeover so I'm not worried.  It feels like a forward looking company union in ever way, or at least that's how it seems to the outside world.

It's no secret Cakewalk was not in good shape when Gibson took over. Gibson is committed to Cakewalk for many reasons, but it doesn't hurt that Henry Juszkiewicz is a long-time user of Cakewalk software. Few CEOs have that deep an understanding of a product and company being acquired, and he really wants Cakewalk to thrive.

No email for me (and not in my spam folder either).  I have always received these in the past; and I renewed back in January (through 3rd party).  I hope my name has not been dropped from the email lists.  Will be looking to see if one comes with the next batch.

I'm starting to feel like Mac support IS the only logical explanation for the drawn out announcement and the intro of lifetime upgrades. Think about it... Cakewalk is probably trying to lock in as many current SONAR users as possible. Once SONAR is available on OSX, it will be competing against Apple's Logic which only cost $200. This means that they will have to lower the price of SONAR significantly. Lowering the price that much would probably tick off many long-time SONAR users and essentially make the subscription-based model obsolete.

like Melodyne and Addictive Drums have.

I owned them both before X3 so the new model is cool beans for me.

Drum Replace? I already owned Trigger2 and Drumagog5.

Vocal Sync? Ok, so if that happened after the lifetime license I would have had to have decided if I wanted it and could always pick it up on a sale or when I REALLY needed it.

Ha ha I feel like a guinea pig in a lab   I think I'm part of a big Cakewalk / Gibson experiment and good luck to them.

They are first to market with another new billing model that is RADICALLY different than anything else in the market, something that looks too good to be true, and seeing how much of a stir that makes in the market place through word of mouth pre launch.

I used to run a software development house, that developed its own products, and I know that the "one time payment" offer is lunacy in terms of product lifecycle and recurring revenues. At the end of the day, developers and testers cost money on an ongoing basis, and new revenues need to be generated to keep them coding and developing the product. Product support needs to keep the ship running and supporting customers, giving them a great customer experience. The product needs to be developed to attract new customers, and all that takes time and money that needs to be funded....hence the need to new and recurring revenues.

UNLESS the product is legacy / end of life, then it makes perfect sense!  It is a great smash and grab to milk the last drops of new revenue out of the product whilst you launch your new product.  Eventually the new product overtakes the revenues of the legacy product which has effectively "funded" the launch of your new product.

Make of that what you will.

My guess is a new product announcement is imminent! This may well have been through an acquisition or partnership. When or what that will be, then your guess is as good as mine.

Good luck to them, I think Cakewalk's customer experience is a great one.  I trust them, and look forward to hearing what's coming.  I'm sure its got rival product developers scratching their heads.  I just hope someone doesn't f*ck up a great company as so often happens when a corporate takes ownership of a smaller company.

However only good things have happened since the Gibson takeover so I'm not worried.  It feels like a forward looking company union in ever way, or at least that's how it seems to the outside world.

Well, IIRC correctly Noel said the bulk of SONAR users are on the Artist product. This lifetime offer is for Platinum users only.

Re: Huge announcements coming June 1st, 2016 2016/05/18 17:15:36 (permalink)
Here's what I am hoping the announcement or even better announcements are :

I hope cakewalk announces that they are starting a server hosted song site : Free to all purchased users of Sonar with a hit's chart and store to sell music. LOL, bit out there I guess, but it was a thought.

Secondly, I hope that the price for TH3 Overloud Full will remain the same, the 149 upgrade going on right now for cakewalk Sonar users or cheaper because I have been demoing it and I like it very much, to me it sound like real amps/fx and functions much the same In my opinion, I plan on buying it but I am a couple weeks away, if it goes up in price I wont be able to afford it. Also plan on upgrading from Artist to Sonar Pro.

MY NIGHTMARE :::::: I hope that the announcement doesn't say "Sonar is going to a CHEAP MONTHLY FEE for UPGRADES AND There will be no more ONE TIME BUY's"...... If that happens, I will change over to Reaper Software so fast it will be ridiculous. I have a 99 dollar upgrade price for Sonar Pro right now, I hope that one last.

Thing with me, I don't like buying anything where I'm on a "SUBSCRIPTION" type of setup or ESPECIALLY AUTO BILLING, that is not something I like at all.

Either way, it will be interesting to see what the announcement is. if it isn't DAW specific oriented then I don't see the purpose of making a big hoopla out of any type of announcement, or that is if it doesn't affect everyone then why do such a thing?

We shall see what happens. I was using MC7 and upgraded to Sonar Artist and plan to upgrade to Sonar Pro if the price stays the same for upgrades in the very near future. I have purchased MC4, 5, 7 and skipped 6 because I was a bit too busy that time.

We shall see what happens. Honestly, It would be nice if they announced something like they are coming out with an affordable USB 3/2 input device where there are upgrades like mixing boards and such things you can ADD ON later, much like the old Commodore 64 PC days where you could buy things as you could afford them.

Oh well..... Just a few of my crazy thoughts, I anxiously await the announcements......

I'm not sure. For years Noel and Seth have said it would be too hard to port Sonar to Mac, the base code being so intrinsic to Windows.
My take is that the Sonar engine is going to be used in alternate products. Splat will stay the mainstay but there'll be a Live type product with the same audio engine but enhanced midi and warping then a product with video editing capacity and then maybe a notation product.
No doubt versions running on iOs and android.
Or an entire new cross code platform.
Whatever no company can sustain a lifetime membership model as someone else has said. So either Splat has limited life or there will be a change as I outlined above

I sure hope the big news isn't that there will only be six months of product life in Sonar Platinum! But don't worry as a lifetime Sonar user you are entitled to a special price on our new Cross Platform DAW!
