Nothing Noel sez means that Gibson won't sell Cakewalk - that old dog still has value.  In fact, if they go bankrupt Gibson won't have a choice about selling what to whom.

However, a new company doesn't have to honor the lifetime updates.  Personally, I figured a life-time upgrade was a short pier to a name change for SONAR, just like fruityloops did.  I didn't think they close rather than be sold.  If Gibson is filing for bankruptcy, it could be a while.  I can't see Gibson sitting on value if they try to muddle through.

I'm sad and angry at the same time.

Sad for me, for all other users, for the development team...
And angry at Gibson.

Now here's an idea. Make Sonar a free software. Leak the code to the community and for the first time ever, there could be a truly good and comprehensive free DAW out on the market, not some deep **** like Audacity.

Or at least please, release the latest install files and make code-free versions of Sonar, Rapture and other pieces of software so that we can keep on using them and installing them without getting blocked by unavailable servers (because that will happen at some point).

Re: Cakewalk Announcement 2017/11/21 17:29:19 (permalink)
At least the announcement talks about 'leaving the lights on' as opposed to crashing and burning it all right away, so one presumes it's expected that a management buy out is very possible or an approach from a friendly suitor.  It's public knowledge that Gibson is strapped and needs to roll over $500m in bank loans next year so they are't in a strong position to quibble much over price.  In the meantime, I hope the key guys (M & F) at Cakewalk don't jump too soon to alternative jobs, because their knowledge is the main asset.

Knock on the Microsoft's door they are more fit and uptodate in PC softwares than Gibson !

Yeah! Microsoft needs to step up to the plate as zApple did with zLogic!

Very sad news to start the day. As everyone else is already saying... I feel very badly for The Bakers with so many years of dedicated work too!

So many of us have been with them for decades and I for one has my life centered around Sonar and it's use.

I have used others and in time I too will be forced to move on to another DAW as situations evolve, but I will cling to Sonar for quite some time I'm sure!

The forum! I too would like to find some way to keep it alive, but as we all slowly move on, much of the topics will cease to apply commonly as migration continues...

I can't say I didn't see this coming... I once was a user/employee of Soundscape who made a direct2disk multitrack for PC before pc-audio interfaces were available.... They got sold to Mackie, and then to SSL where they were finally fully folded into the company and all Soundscape products cease to survive...

I felt this when Roland/Tascam/Gibson purchased/sold Cakewalk and deepened with the offering of Lifetime Updates.... I wondered when the other shoe would fall and hence, the axe! <sigh>

Here's hoping for some kind of last minute reprieve. There must be at least one of us who is wealthy enough to make it happen...

I am in shock anyway!

My gratitude to The Bakers! All the many both with us now and of earlier times. I have always considered you and the forum members to be an extension of my life. This feels much like a bomb wiping out a large number of close relations in one swift moment...

<sheesh>... thinking of the other DAW's out there I don't have one I will be crazy about. that much I'm certain.!

I will hold onto Sonar for as long as is remotely possible... It's current status has a few sore spots that will persist forever, but it still beats the competition in everything (except sales it seems?)

All my Love and Gratitude to all involved... I hope the future has good things in store for the Bakers and maybe they will all merge into another DAW helping raise it to the beauty of Sonar! <sigh>...

This is devastating news. I have been using Sonar since the dos days. I have always trusted this company. However, I started having concerns about the stability of the company after watching it get bought and sold multiple times. Also the lifetime offer led me to believe the company needed immediate cash flow to stay a float. However, it was after Craig announced his departure is when I saw the writing on the wall. I jumped in on the lifetime offer with hope. I just cannot believe this is actually coming to an end. Noel's announcement is the typical announcement you heard from other companies that closed their doors. However, history has shown that our product will at some point reach the end-of-life and we will be forced to switch to a new DAW.

I invested in Studio One Professional a few months ago and have been working hard between projects to get up too speed. I guess I need to move full speed ahead in light of this news. So disappointing news. I have invested so much money in this company and love Sonar. It does not make since for me to start any new projects in Sonar since I have Studio One.

Holy crap.

I've been using Cakewalk since the 1990s. I used to work across the street from their Boston headquarters.

This truly stinks. Thank goodness I didn't fall for forking out another $200 for another year of upgrades. Those who did should get an immediate refund. I think it would also be nice if Gibson powers that be would make the final version available for free to anyone who was a subscriber over the past few years. It would be a benevolent gesture to the millions of us longtime and loyal users who could have switched to any other DAW but stayed with Sonar.

If this forum is closed, I could provide a new forum for the Cakewalk community with no cost or to the users.

Hi Panu!

That's very kind of you. What a great alternative! You have always been a very dedicated and creative member of the Sonar community. It seems it would be very appropriate...

I wonder if there's any chance Cakewalk might make the code available for future development by driven souls?

First, I wish the absolute best to the Cakewalk staff!
Would be nice if the group could stay together and (somehow) the product continue.
Hate to see it just disappear... after so much time/effort

As someone who's been around since the CompuServe forum days (was much younger then)... this feels particularly strange.  I've grown old with you folks.

Any chance Greg Hendershot would pull a "Steve Jobs"... and come back to see the phoenix rise?

I'm not an active Sonar user anymore, but I just wanted to say that i'm saddened by this news. And reading it prompted me to look up this forum.

Hopefully there will be a way to continue further development and have everyone here still be able to be working with it for a long time.

Also, I want to wish all Cakewalk employees the best in the future.

Pretty livid about this announcement with no level of detail other than it will continue to work. It is my hope that they continue to patch updates to sonar platinum users for a year to ease the transition or give partial refunds to those that purchased SPLAT. One windows update can break a piece of software. Ugh! Loo forward to some level of detail for how customers are going to be handled.

So sad for all the great Cakewalk folk who have helped to make it the excellent DAW that it is.

As for my lifetime updates, well let's just say that I always hoped the naysayers were wrong but unfortunately that wasn't to be.

I had also literally just convinced a friend to buy Sonar Professional which he did at lunchtime today.
I hope that he can get a refund.

Well, it was pretty obvious once CW was sold this was gonna happen. Sad for Noel and the gang.

I came to the realization about 4 years ago that:
1. The Music Biz as we knew it growing up was dead
2. That the majority of users of CW are probably much like myself: weekend warrior types who liked to noodle around and make songs they should have made 30 years ago, but now just do it for ****s and giggles... Sonar was always geared to that market more than any other.
3. Look at the musical interests of today's youth...I have two kids in HS...neither them nor anyone in their extensive groups of friends play an instrument, are in a band, want to do ANYTHING with music other than drop beats and rap. That is a sea change from our collective upbringings.
4. As all our musical heroes are either dead or doing sad baby boomer nostalgia tours (ahem, Rolling Stones, McCartney), and there is NO ONE TO REPLACE THEM. Hence, old school software like Sonar was just marking time.

Sorry for the rant...I've enjoyed CW and their forums, met many friends and loved collaborating...thanks to all for being a part of my life.

Here's a grand idea...Gibson should assemble the transition team and let them assess what it would take to keep the platinum line afloat. Then...Start a kickstarter or indiegogo campaign to fund a small dev team for a few years. Let Sonar be the PBS of DAWS. If I know anything...Cakewalk users would fund this. Gibson could essentially sell this to the userbase. Just a thought to pass up the overpriced guitar company flagpole.

I'm a little shocked right now - being a professional engineer who runs my studio totally on Sonar for projects this now forces me to look at other DAWs, learning curves, decisions about how to transition to another DAW, never mind all the Sonar specific plugs that I know like the back of my hand.... wow... much to contemplate.

Same here. I found out Friday that Cakewalk was officially closed down from contacts at other companies, and called Noel on Sunday just to make sure. To me it's like a death in the family.

On the bright side, there are still people using ancient versions of SONAR, so I think it's probably safe to assume I'll get plenty more years out of it before Windows changes to the point where it's unusable.

On the other hand...as I've mentioned before, I also use Studio One Pro for the mastering-oriented Project page functions and Ableton Live for live performance. I've always felt SOP was closest to SONAR, so I guess it's time to learn the Song page functionality and move on.

I'm downloading the Studio One Pro soundsets in the background...

BTW someone might want to hip Gibson to the typo in the "Annoucement" headline.
