Cakewalk Announcement

After 30 years of Cakewalk's long and illustrious history, I am saddened to announce that we ceased new product development and reduced overall operations this past Friday. You can read the formal announcement from Gibson here, which states that this decision was made in order to align with the company’s acquisition strategy, focused on growth in the global consumer electronics audio business.

Working at Cakewalk has been an incredibly positive experience for all of us who worked here. This can largely be attributed to the incredible people who worked here, past and present. I've been at Cakewalk 19 years and I've never come across a more dedicated and talented group of people. Our greatest motivation was the joy in producing software for an astonishingly passionate base of artists, musicians and producers who used our software to create music on a daily basis.

So what does this mean for you, our loyal customers who've been with us all these years? Cakewalk's servers will continue to operate, you will still have access to all of your online assets, and your software will continue to work normally. A dedicated team has been established during this transition period to continue to serve the Cakewalk community. Monthly updates to SONAR from Cakewalk will however cease during this time. We will continue to post notifications to keep you informed with any relevant developments. A sincere thank you to everyone in the Cakewalk community.

Sincerely,
Noel Borthwick,
CTO, Cakewalk

So sad...

I have been with Cakewalk since it was bundled with a SoundBlaster card and could only do MIDI...

Best of luck to all the Cakewalk employees who are getting screwed over by this decision.

Cakewalk needs to be sold, not closed. Closing down for any amount of time is a death sentence.

Noel, this is indeed sad news. My heart goes out to all of those involved with Cakewalk. It is so disheartening to have an event like this occur, especially at this time of year. I am sure that as this door closes, you and those you work with will find new windows of opportunity opening for each of you.

I wish to thank you for everything that you and all the bakers have done to make SONAR a supreme product. Please know that in our eyes, Cakewalk did not fail, but rather others failed you and your crew.

Good luck and God speed in your next endeavors. I know all of you will do well.

I couldn't believe the news, so very saddened by it. I'm hoping maybe against hope that somehow Cakewalk gets rebooted under a new owner.

To say I'm devastated is an understatement. What happens now to our subscriptions ? How do we ensure that Sonar will keep running and remain licensed ? What about Rapture and others - will license codes still work in the future if we have to re-install ?

Did Gibson try to sell Cakewalk to another company before now?

Terrible news for us.  As for Cakewalk employees, I thank you for Sonar.

30 years.... too young to die
I wish CW employers all the best and to find good place for the next 30 years

For users... I wish a free from on-line authorization Sonar version (X3 like) can be released. CW was selling "Lifetime" license, and sorry to say, but most have understood is as a personal lifetime and not as CW lifetime (which happened to be rather short).

Sonar 8LE -> Platinum infinity, REAPER, Windows 10 pro

For a while. We all know that in other similar cases, services gradually fade away until they disappear completely after some time.
It is sad to know that only a few heads can decide the fate of thousands.
But life is just the same ... I just have to thank Cakewalk for the decades I've been faithful to them ...

Wow..

Been using this DAW since Cakewalk 3.4 on one 1/4" stiffy, circa 1994-ish.

I'm a little shocked right now - being a professional engineer who runs my studio totally on Sonar for projects this now forces me to look at other DAWs, learning curves, decisions about how to transition to another DAW, never mind all the Sonar specific plugs that I know like the back of my hand.... wow... much to contemplate.
Is this a classic case of the Big Corporation agenda won out over the free-thinking smaller guy, I wonder?

Either way, the Bakers have made something special over the years - I thank you guys sincerely.
