happyrat1 If Gibson's refusing to keep the company alive then why not transfer all the old programs over to the public domain instead of making us pray that our validation codes will still work years later? Some of us are so deeply mired in Cakewalk software and projects that transferring over to a new format is no easy feat!!! The least you could do is release a few older versions without DRM issues so that we can still keep on using the software for years to come. Gary ;)
Completely agree with you Gary - don't understand why it was not possible to sell it as a going concern either. Their tech was awesome and the set of instruments and audio fx outstanding! Just hating Gibson now.

We have 15 computers running SONAR to digitize tapes, vinyl ... I have no idea how to change our business to an other DAW. That is a big financial failure. And I do not think the servers will be up and running in the next 20 years. I am totally shocked. I'm working with SONAR since 1995. Why is Gibson doing that?

ojdonovan Okay, Just want to point out that I am very disappointed at this decision on several levels. I have questions. 1) Knowing that this was in the pipe, why did you continue to push sales of a product you had no intention of supporting? 2) Do you think that practice will not somehow not become common knowledge and have an impact on your sales of "other" audio products? Do you think it wise? 3) As an owner of multiple cakewalk products, at a substantial cost, what do you intend to do so that when I have to change a motherboard, or disk, or laptop, I can migrate the software I own and have it operate properly. Meaning, since I have to register with your site, what do you plan to do to allow me authorize my software without you? 4) If you intend not to do anything regarding question #3, do you intend provide an app, or function that will allow all of the professionals out there that have substantial amounts of projects in the Sonar format to export them (using a form of bundle) into a format that can be used (imported) by a product such as Cubase, or Logic Pro, Pro Tools, etc,. I would like to think that with the loyalty that sonar users have bestowed to Cakewalk over the years, it merits careful consideration that both items #3 and #4 are valid and deserve not only addressing, but action taken to resolve in responsible fashion with solutions worthy of the support we have given you. Sincerely, O.J. Donovan
Couldn't have put it better. Absolutely outraged by Gibson (but from what I now read, not surprised) and definitely feeling for the great team at Cakewalk, who've made my home recording possible over the years! Just hope someone goes in and grabs the team, and ideally the software, and is able to take it forward!

Truly sorry for the folks that will be having a lean Christmas. The employees have been great to deal with and I'm sorry they're going to be job hunting in the new year. On the other hand, I want to get everything I've ever purchased onto my PC while it's still available. Just because they say the servers will still run means nothing, they could be shut off tomorrow. I can't express my feelings about this. I'm mad at myself for doubling down on Sonar. I don't have the funds to recreate my software collection with another company. LJB I'm a little shocked right now - being a professional engineer who runs my studio totally on Sonar for projects this now forces me to look at other DAWs, learning curves, decisions about how to transition to another DAW, never mind all the Sonar specific plugs that I know like the back of my hand.... wow... much to contemplate.
I just rebuilt my studio, so I'm sort of in transition mode anyway. I saw this coming when the long-timers like us were offered lifetime subscriptions - that's simply a way to say "give us one last bit of cash before we go." I got an "extra" six months out of it. When they said the anniversary celebrations this year were going to be full of surprises...yeah...no kidding.

anxiousmofo I guess this cements my decision to never buy a Gibson brand product again. Thanks for taking our money and leaving us with a "lifetime" of nothing, Gibson.
Same with me. I feel competely fooled by this Company. Shame over the greedy business beople who spoil the name of such a traditional brand in moments. bah... that I have to experience this in my old days. Last year bought the lifetime, but it seems the bosses had planned this that way, to suck all Juice out and then Crash the house. I have to Keep myself not to write acronyms. So Sorry for the Cakewalk staff. But never again a single Dollar for Gibson Company (This includes Epiphone), even with the strings I have to change the brand

If the servers die you can't reinstall anything post X3 due to the change they made in the authorization process. It won't matter how many backups you have of the installers.

I bought Harrison Mixbus a few weeks ago just to try it out (and because it was only like $40). I also just purchased the Console 1 because it works with Sonar. This will hold me over for a bit but it seems Ill be needing to move to Studio One eventually. I am a Fender guy so I was already bumming when Gibson bought Cakewalk. Hatstand My thoughts go out to all the employees and their families. It must be hard given the time of year. Izotope are round those parts, do you think they would fancy adopting a few orphans and perhaps an orphaned DAW? I hope at least the former if not the latter.
Good suggestion. Having a darn good DAW in their portfolio would be a good idea, and they'd get economies of scale by acquiring the code and rights along with selected key CW technical staff.

Good thing I've recently started to get into Mixbus... Really sad news, I've also been a Cakewalk user for a loooonnnng time. Will miss the updates and all you great folks on the forum here. And yeah it'll still be around for a while but eventually we'll all have to find other pastures. I don't think Sonar will stop working though. Does it need an online connection to run? Don't think so, so whatever version we have running (I have Plat, latest) I guess that'll have to do. Which isn't bad, it's not like I can't record anymore but F*** Gibson. Man I've lost a lot of faith in that company the last few years... Edit: Just read you can't re-install after X3 because of authorization. Hope they make 1 last change to fix that.

A couple things...FWIW... Since I'm no longer with Gibson, I don't know what plans are afoot, if any, to salvage or sell the company but it wouldn't surprise me if there's more going on than meets the eye. I made some specific suggestions regarding selling or licensing Cakewalk IP (old habits die hard). I don't know if those suggestions will be pursued or not, but I tried. Meanwhile, I love this community and believe it's a great group of people. The servers are still going and the forum still exists. However, I did talk to Dendy Jarrett who manages Harmony Central and alerted him to the fact that this community may or may not be looking for a home, and to please monitor the situation. I really feel for the Cakewalk employees. Again FWIW, I've been in touch with some companies that are always looking for talent, and given that a lot of talent is now available, I'm hoping that at least some employees may have a better Christmas than Thanksgiving. There really is no DAW that's like SONAR, so I hope I can continue using it for a while even as I ramp up on Studio One Pro and continue working with Live. But also remember this is kind of a funny industry...sometimes things don't really die, they become absorbed into something else. Fingers crossed.

So sad for Sonar, the CW stuff and for the forum cvommunity. Don´t know where to let go my frustration about that cause this is the second DAW ( have been a windows based logic user til 2003) love to work with and which stopps working for me . Seems to be no chance to develope Sonar further on cause Gibson sure would make money selling CW if possible to get ride of finacial issues. No millionaire arround in this forum saving Sonar ? regards

Just a few days ago, I'm sure some others got the email talking about all the new and exciting things coming to cakewalk. Well, if the Forums go down, might I suggest that some of you who have been here for a long time consider creating a free forum using Zetaboards and let it be known before it's too late, they are pretty good, I created one a few years ago but found I didn't have the time to maintain them, plus they are free "With ads" but you can pay for ads, or perhaps have a donation link to pay for them. Just a thought in case there are no more Cakewalk forums. http://www.zetaboards.com/ If for nothing else, maybe create a Songs forum to keep friend in contact. At this point, even if there was a message saying "The Cakewalk Forums will remain", I don't think that I would believe it considering the circumstances. I must say, a lot of you have seen read post by me at my darkest times and really good times. I know I'm moody and have an attitude "Not by Choice", but if these forums go down I want to say that it has been a pleasure to chat with you all on here. Musicians are moody by nature, music is personal and I believe that is why. I'm going to stop ranting here and give others a chance to do so, but I just wanted to say regardless of what has occurred or will happen that I wish you all the best always! Bobby
