Sad day...sorry for the Cakewalk bakers, and sorry for us. I was just gearing up for a new DAW build, so I'm glad I didn't blow money on Sonar yet. So...what do we do about 20+ years worth of songs recorded in Sonar that we would like to finish, revisit, rework, update and all that? Do other DAW's read Cakewalk work files? Bundle files?

I'm also thinking that sooner or later, one of the other DAW manufacturers is going to reach out to Sonar users and offer them a great deal on a crossgrade. This must be an excellent opportunity for other companies to salvage Cakewalk's market share. I hope that someone buys Cakewalk though. Microsoft would be great.

ampfixer On the other hand, I want to get everything I've ever purchased onto my PC while it's still available. Just because they say the servers will still run means nothing, they could be shut off tomorrow. I can't express my feelings about this. I'm mad at myself for doubling down on Sonar. I don't have the funds to recreate my software collection with another company. REALLY GLAD I overhauled my Teac 3440 on the weekend. IT still works great after almost 40 years. Gibson is dead to me.
If the servers die you can't reinstall anything post X3 due to the change they made in the authorization process. It won't matter how many backups you have of the installers.
WHAT!!! You mean if they close the servers I'm done?? They should change that ASAP. We must have some rights in all of this mess.
When you install the products, they have to talk to the server in order to authorize it for use. If the software reaches out and does not connect to the server, you will be stuck in demo mode. They started this practice after X3 versions as fundamental way in which the software works.

http://cdm.link/2017/11/gibson-just-killed-cakewalk-philips/
Gibson, the company known for legendary guitars and killing your favorite DAW in the 90s … now gets the chance to remind the pro audio crowd of the latter. Gibson is discontinuing all development of Cakewalk products, which would include the SONAR flagship DAW. The explanation: they want to focus on consumer audio electronics, namely Philips:
Gibson Brands announced today that it is ceasing active development and production of Cakewalk branded products. The decision was made to better align with the company’s acquisition strategy that is heavily focused on growth in the global consumer electronics audio business under the Philips brand.
And it means that just as Dutch giant Philips moves to “health and well being,” Gibson is moving from being a guitar company into being a consumer electronics megacorp.
Now that corporations are all about profit, and run by investors or CEO's that don't know products, only know investing and profits, this is a norm across all products and services. It's buy/sell based on profitability, and has zero to do with having a great product for a long time. Consumers are screwed generally under this model. Brian

Thank you Mr. Anderton, recently I had a problem with Sonar Pro, I was a bit too animated, I apologize for being that way to you and everyone on here. I resolved my problem, I had a virus on my PC, but your information on how to fix my PC, specifically mentioned BLUE TOOTH and WIFI which I don't use really helped me. My Sonar Pro is working Flawlessly. I just wanted to come back and say THANK YOU SIR! I am thrilled with how my Sonar Pro is working now. As I said in an earlier post, I made an image backup of everything so I am good to go for a while I guess. I feel the same way, I've made some great friends here, argued with a bunch at times, but like I said earlier, music is personal and sometimes "ME ESPECIALLY" take things too personally. But lately I've grown from the critics and learned from the advice, and regardless of where my musical journey takes me from here on creating music, I have nothing to say to all except Thank you for your endless advice, constant criticism, and HONESTY! I've improved so much in the last couple months beyond anything I could have ever imaged creating music, I've learned not to let my ego get in the way and even if they shut down the forums, I wish there was some way there could be an archive of them because there is a wealth of information on using Cakewalk software that not only applies to Cakewalk but recording in general using any day. Thank you all! Wish you all the best always!

Heartbroken to hear this. After trying a few DAWs I settled on Sonar, probably about 10 years ago now.
Thanks to the team for making a consistent product. I'm really sorry to hear about this as clearly it will lead to job-loss at the worst time of year. I have to admit to tentatively exploring some other DAWs when Gibson took over a few years ago, though I didn't think it would lead to this. The latest version is really good and will be relevant I'm sure for the forseeable future. On a practical note, will we need to cancel automated payments for monthly subscription, or will this happen automatically? Regards, and here is hoping you guys find a buyer, or alternative employment in the very near future.

daws all import / read audio and midi.. export that... from sonar.. or you can midi sync/lock 2 machines , play one record other. I'm glad I didn't buy the "lifetime" update.. too many pro audio companies have stung me already.. I wasn't surprised to hear this news after I heard about the gibson factory closing a while back ? .. it's good they told you now, so if you want something for black friday, get it.. as for sonar users ? 2 other things I'd say to use if you do / did want to switch , either studio one or cubase (also if you want notation) . I won't / will not ever support avid, for their actions and lack of support, and also what they did to Sibelius London staff, I hope the steiny type thing teaches them a lesson. reason I like using also , it nows supports vst.. but prefer studio 1 or cubase for mixing down. they should have put ilok/dongle in and allowed sale transfers.. the trust system sadly don't work.. and hasn't done dev's any favours.. and forget the subs model thats a load of bunk. the UK price for me to upgrade has been totally rubbish, from cakes own shop.. stupidly high, so I wouldn't update.. if you want to sell me the update at a highly discounted price, then yer I'll go for it.. or you can keep it. all companies are about IP striping etc. games industry has had it for years, and it i've seen it with music now for a few years. sad for the employee's. but well they are a talented bunch / will get work elsewhere, if need be.

The more I think about this the angrier I get. Not just about the Sonar decision, but how it was handled. They offered a sale on the annual membership up through the end of October. That's just a few weeks ago. They had to know at that time that they were going to be doing this. And yet they screw their customers anyway. If I don't get a refund or at least a partial refund I'm going on a crusade to let everybody know to never buy any Gibson products and I just might sell my Les Paul also. There is a sense of right and wrong and how you treat your customers. Enticing your loyal customers to purchase an annual membership renewal on a product they knew they would no longer be developing is unethical and maybe illegal. The promise was to get monthly updates, which we will not get.

I m pragmatic , but with the most honesty i can have , i tried deeply and own pretty all alternative , and sonar is on crucial points untouchable ...simple stuff like xray , oversampling , screensets, real plugin layout and manager , templates , ect ...makes studio a no go for me and i don t even talk audio engine strongness , pdc , dsp optimisation for plugin calculation ect ...
So i see a brand buiying it or we guyz become the majority actionnaire and we buy the damn thing , if the bakers can communicate us the user data base , the minimal need for actual support (no dev but maintenace of the actual state of sonar ) we could estime what can be recoltee and what can be done

This is why I didn't buy into the lifetime updates which I guess only meant a year or so. Guitar sales are in decline and Gibson has been struggling to refinance their debts for some time. It was just a matter of time before this happened as they have been selling off or closing other units. The money I saved I was able to put toward another daw a year ago. Sad, but time marches on and no company lasts forever. Cakewalk with Sonar was just not remaining relevant to direction that music production is headed and pulling in enough new users. It will be interesting to see if there is an option for folks to get the final version of Sonar that don't have a current update plan. For me, I'm fine with the version I have if this isn't possible as I only keep it around for legacy projects.

This is so sad! I've been using Sonar since Sonar 2 and have almost ever version of it up to and including a lifetime Sonar subscription. I will ride the Sonar horse until it dies. Until a new Windows version kills it maybe I will have a few more years. Of course the concern I have is I am not sure I have complete installation file for it in the event my PC dies and I need to install it on a new DAW. The news is just now getting out. I sure hope a buyer steps forward to take Cakewalk over. Why couldn't Ableton, or Propellerhead, take it over? Sonar would enhance their product line.

Hi- Like many here, I started using Cakewalk when it first came out in the old DOS days. I stayed with it until the lifetime update offer, but had pretty much already switched to REAPER as my full-time DAW, with FL Studio as my “scratchpad.” I haven’t been on these forums regularly for quite some time, but I saw a post on the REAPER forum about Gibson’s decision and wanted to check the comments and responses here. [BTW, I’m happy to see that so far, at least, there’s been no “glee” expressed on the REAPER forum about the news at all.] I’m sad (in a sentimental way) about the news, since Cakewalk/Pro Audio/SONAR have been such a big part of my DAW experience for so long and because I’ve learned so much from the forums here and actually made a friend or two ;). Here’s hoping for all the best for everyone involved. P.S. I got a chuckle out of the post someone made about this answering the question whether or not there would ever be improvements to the Staff View ;) -Susan

synkrotron ...I will treat any future demise with my beloved SONAR as an opportunity to move on and do something new...
I've been pretty depressed since I read the announcement this morning. I'm just finishing up the latest CD with my wife and son waiting for him to finish up drum parts for a couple songs. Hope Sonar lasts long enough for me to finish the album. Nobody can guarantee that Sonar will continue to run for days, months or years without some support. From I can gather from posts on the forum, Studio One Pro seems to be the best choice for a replacement DAW. Time to start studying again... Walt Best wishes for the great crew from Cakewalk. They deserve better!

Please say it isn't so. Please someone buy this program. It is great. It needs perhaps a couple more tweaks but it is the best out there. I have used it longer that some users have been alive. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - someone invest in this. Should we form a co-op?
What is the price? Berkshire-Hathaway --- Warren Buffet - are you reading this? Please help!!!

Who owns rights to the code base? Can't whoever that it is take it home and get re-going on it?
