This is very sad.
Good luck to all the employees - it would be awesome if some big name (cm'on Microsoft) bought the brand and rebooted it.
I am looking forward to seeing what happens next.

Thanks Cakewalk for the awesomeness

An incredibly sad piece of news..

I sincerely hope that the folks at CW land on their feet as particularly the last few years have done an amazing job.

good luck to you all

I know the servers will keep running (for awhile) but I would love to have sonar platinum install files so I can install them later and not have to rely on the server.

Joe

Then download them from your account.
If you use Command center to install Sonar than they are already on your computer.

And I JUST last week deleted many of the older files in the Command Center folder on drive C; it was many gigabytes of old files.  I did keep the newest one of everything, though.

Software: Cakewalk by Bandlab; Adobe Audition; Band-in-A-Box audiophile; Izotope Ozone; Encore; Melodyne; Win 10 Pro, 64-bit.

Hardware: Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 2nd; Roland Integra-7; TCE Finalizer; Presonus Central Station, Behringer X-Touch.  Home built i7 with 16 GB RAM, SSDs.

My thoughts go out to all the employees and their families. It must be hard given the time of year. Izotope are round those parts,  do you think they would fancy adopting a few orphans and perhaps an orphaned DAW? I hope at least the former if not the latter.

This is sad! A bunch of really talented, dedicated folks from development to marketing are all in serious trouble, I hope Gibson was decent enough to provide timelines and respectable severance, but I'm not confident.

This is not the first software tool I've lost, and it won't be the last. That's part and parcel of the software industry in general, and especially in our little neck of the woods.

Let's face it, the Music Biz is transforming, and it is moving away from what some of us remember as music production. You know,  catchy hooks, live players, that stuff.

As that happens the entire Musical Instrument market is taking a hit. But there is a second, more nefarious force at play - the retail landscape has changed forever thanks to the internet, and to a lesser degree big box stores. And we, the consumers share some of the blame - we want ever lower prices. The two big music retailers right now are swimming in debt, and that flows uphill, if SamAsh and GC can't pay the manufacturers then the manufacturers are in trouble too. There is a reason Gibson, Fender, Harman, etc haven't called in the debt!

In the greater scheme of things this is still significant. But the only people facing an oncoming train are the Cakewalk employees (although other Gibson divisions can't be far behind.)

I think we - the Cakewalk community - need to keep things in perspective. A little "woe is me" is ok, but let's not forget the folks who are taking a real hit.

Extremely sad news indeed, really feel for the bakers at this point, especially with the holidays coming up.

I'm in hope that 30 yrs of leading edge development won't be left to rot on the shelf. If Microsoft were truly after 'the creators' market then they need to acquire Cakewalk pronto and let the bakers get on with developing the best windows specific DAW out there.. It'd be pocket change to them, but would signal a commitment to the windows platform.

With their move to monthly updates, Cakewalk were powering ahead. Hopefully this will be just a blip.. hopefully!

If Gibson's refusing to keep the company alive then why not transfer all the old programs over to the public domain instead of making us pray that our validation codes will still work years later?

Some of us are so deeply mired in Cakewalk software and projects that transferring over to a new format is no easy feat!!!

The least you could do is release a few older versions without DRM issues so that we can still keep on using the software for years to come.

This is rough. I was seriously hoping that Cakewalk would outlive me (I know that's an odd way to put it, but I found the idea comforting).

I've been using with Cakewalk since Cakewalk 3 for DOS. While I certainly echo Craig's comments about old copies running for a long time, I'm not sure how long this will be viable with Win10 updating itself at regular intervals (perhaps it's a really good time to turn off that, er, um, "feature" of Win10).

Like everyone else, I'm hoping that some company comes in to purchase Sonar and save it. Microsoft might be the best solution and they certainly have deep enough pockets for that. Does anyone know anyone at Microsoft to suggest this?

I wish the best to all of Cakewalk's employees. I've appreciated their work over the years and hope that none are inevitably left "high and dry" by this move.

“Beer is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy” is attributed to Benjamin Franklin perhaps in error, but the thought remains a worthy sentiment nonetheless.

I am thinking I may have to give Reaper another look or maybe Mixcraft or something like that.

In a way though, I am glad that I didn't take them up on the Lifetime updates offer because apparently it appears everyone who took that offer last year around this time got around 1 year of updates. I feel really bad for those of you who got the lifetime updates offer only now to find out there will be no more updates.

Either way, my Sonar Pro since resolving a few issues "On my side" has worked flawlessly lately, so I guess I need to take extra care in keeping an image backup copy of my PC with Sonar Pro already activated "JUST INCASE", maybe even 2 image backups just in case.

Sad news indeed.

Read the last paragraph of Noel's post.  Everything works, just no more development on Sonar or any other product.

Until they turn the lights out on Command Center server. Anybody who owned Native Instruments plugins before they moved to their current authorization method (around 2008?) knows what will happen when we try to install on a new computer.

Noel and Gang,

Hope to run into face-to-face one day to personally thank you for your efforts in running the Sonar (and products) line.  Was just composing the other night and thinking, man, I should tell these guys what an awesome product this is and what good it has brought to my life.  Might have had a bit too much whiskey at the time, but the feelings are still there when sober!  Ha.
I wish you all the best of luck!

Bad news for us lifetimers , but personally not surprised at all. I read up a bit on Gibson after I bought a Garrison guitar. They bought the factory, ran it for a year and closed it laying off a talented group of dedicated employees.
Boycotting them won't change a thing as by next Summer they will also be out of business because they are too far gone now.

For those worrying about the CCC , just run it and bring everything up to date and then make a back up of the CCC download folder.

You can do offline installations but the catch will be someday they will pull the plug and even offline activation requires contact with Cake.

So best to run out and build a brand new machine right now and install Sonar and then you should get 10 years out of that.

And if it really goes off line bet someone will make a hack to keep us going. I won't consider that as piracy until after 2033.

Best future wishes to those who work or worked for Cakewalk and have put in so much time and effort to make Sonar what it is today. You can be proud of a wonderful product with a loyal fanbase.

This might not be the end. This move lets them off the hook for the monthly updates and the lifetime memberships.
These were decisions made by shirts that didn't understand the DAW business or the software business for that matter. I would be willing to wager that most here would be willing to buy Sonar re branded using the same code for a reasonable price.

I had the lifetime updates. Even though I benefited from that, I will be more than willing to put up money for future copies of this software if someone else buys Cakewalk and supports it.

Acid Pro sat for years with no major updates under Sony yet still had a loyal following. Things looked up for them when Magix stepped in and bought them. Studio One was developed by engineers from Cubase who left.....so what I'm saying is don't give up on this just yet. Cake still has the code which valuable. The last thing you want to do is give that code away for free IMHO. Unless a disgruntled employee ruins access to it, the software can come back under someone else.

I have long speculated about a relationship between Microsoft and Cakewalk. Whoever is in the drivers seat, stop talking about it and find email/phone number to ask them. Talking about it won't make it happen. Somebody pick up a phone and make a few calls.Schedule a meeting or something, like NOW or even YESTERDAY.

IMHO with Windows and misc (across all manufacturers) hardware models with driver updates and tweaks needed....Even those with rock solid systems will soon find Sonar faltering then becoming unusable as time goes on.

Most of all as has been said already this sucks in a most serious manner for Cake employees. And during the holidays. I won't buy a Gibson anything anymore. I had high hopes.

Weird ..

http://cdm.link/2017/11/gibson-just-killed-cakewalk-philips/

Gibson, the company known for legendary guitars and killing your favorite DAW in the 90s … now gets the chance to remind the pro audio crowd of the latter.
Gibson is discontinuing all development of Cakewalk products, which would include the SONAR flagship DAW. The explanation: they want to focus on consumer audio electronics, namely Philips:
Gibson Brands announced today that it is ceasing active development and production of Cakewalk branded products. The decision was made to better align with the company’s acquisition strategy that is heavily focused on growth in the global consumer electronics audio business under the Philips brand.

And it means that just as Dutch giant Philips moves to “health and well being,” Gibson is moving from being a guitar company into being a consumer electronics megacorp.

Gibson, The company that brought you the 2015 models, arguably the stupidest guitars ever made, at any time in recorded history.

25 years of using CW. I've used them all and always went back to CW and I freakin' LOVE Sonar.

Best of luck to all of you at Cakewalk. You rock. Thanks for all the years of great music making.

So sad that my "lifetime" updates actually died.

And now, back to Cubase I guess... sigh.

I hate to say it out loud and may get chastised for this 😊 but now I have to look at another DAW software package, sooner than later before an unsolvable issue comes up. I've been with Cake for 15 yrs, too. So this is a sad step.
I'm looking at Reaper or Ableton I suppose. I'll probably look at some form of PT too I guess.
The only thing we can do is move forward.

PS, anyway, I'll contribute to any forum maintenance cost if that becomes a thing. There are some great folks here.

Re: Cakewalk Announcement 2017/11/21 19:16:15 (permalink)
Okay, Just want to point out that I am very disappointed at this decision on several levels. I have questions.

1) Knowing that this was in the pipe, why did you continue to push sales of a product you had no intention of supporting?
2) Do you think that practice will not somehow not become common knowledge and have an impact on your sales of "other" audio products? Do you think it wise?
3) As an owner of multiple cakewalk products, at a substantial cost, what do you intend to do so that when I have to change a motherboard, or disk, or laptop, I can migrate the software I own and have it operate properly. Meaning, since I have to register with your site, what do you plan to do to allow me authorize my software without you?
4) If you intend not to do anything regarding question #3, do you intend provide an app, or function that will allow all of the professionals out there that have substantial amounts of projects in the Sonar format to export them (using a form of bundle) into a format that can be used (imported) by a product such as Cubase, or Logic Pro, Pro Tools, etc,.

I would like to think that with the loyalty that sonar users have bestowed to Cakewalk over the years, it merits careful consideration that both items #3 and #4 are valid and deserve not only addressing, but action taken to resolve in responsible fashion with solutions worthy of the support we have given you.

Sincerely,
O.J. Donovan
