When I reply and hit 'post message' I'd like to be directed back to the top of the forum like it used to work, instead of staying on the same page. I have that option clicked in my preferences, but it's not working.

Hey Willy, You've done a great job so far on installing the new forum software upgrade. Very nice. I have the theme set to 'Cakewalk', much better layout, such as I like the thread starter column, padding is nice and compact, page width is good :-) I have a suggestion; change the orange category headers to the same color as the links above (Products, Store, News, etc) so it blends in better.

Problem: 1) No matter how wide one makes a page, there's still a scroll bar across the bottom of the web page. 2) Incomplete inclusion of text in emailed notices - i.e. when an email notification of a post is received the additional text entered by the responder goes missing.

Maybe I am missing it, but I can't figure out how to filter posts to show only threads that I have contributed to. Very useful in cutting through the new threads to see if followup is needed on a prior post. I have been doing this by forum search with a blank search field by author me, but that is way tedious. On the plus side it is very easy to click on a post number and get a url that will link directly to that particular post (not the top post of the thread). This is very useful to include a link to an answer to a new question in an old thread, it can also be used as a kludge to replace in reply to, without having to quote the post you are replying to.

2) when a page loads in the thread, it loses the focus. I have to click somewhere in the browser window (IE7 and not likely to change!) in order to get the scroll wheel to work. I always hit the scroll wheel as soon as the post page loads, but now I have to click in the post somewhere BEFORE I do that. I'm definitely not seeing this one at all, tried IE7 and IE8. not sure why - but it does it to me every time. Same problem here using IE7.

Mamabear Sad, sad, sad... I have several...dozens...of emails to myself in a special Outlook folder with urls to specific threads I want to reference periodically. Those urls (if that's the right 'word') no longer work. :-( Janet: I did some comparisons between the two different url's and what I found was the following change: The old url: http://forum.cakewalk.com/fb.asp?m=1770770 The new url: http://forum.cakewalk.com/fb.ashx?m=1778076 Other than the number at the end, which indicates the thread number, the only obvious change I can see is the asp part changed to ashx. Now I'm not savvy enough to say what this all means - maybe someone like bitflipper or Willy can say - but I don't think it's something that can be changed with the new software. Edit for additional info - if you change the above mentioned asp to ashx it will take you to the thread you want - a royal pain in the rump if you ask me.

I was one of the users that thought the old forum was very nice. I was another one. The old Cakewalk forum was my favorite in terms of usability. Most of my problems with this new forum have been mentioned already. The very first thing I missed was the "in reply to" feature. That is vital for good communication here. On the list of threads, the link to "go to first unread message" is now on the right after the thread title. Previously, it was on the left. That made it simple to just run the mouse down the list simply in a vertical line, and middle-click (in firefox) to open the threads in new tabs right at the spot I left off. Now I have to do horizontal mouse movement to get to that link. It's one of those things that goes to the heart of having a forum that is a breeze to use, and a forum that just wears you down with little minor annoyances. All the little extra mouse moving and annoyances adds up. As has been mentioned: not being able to move the posting window outside of the browser. The posting window seems like it isn't even a proper browser window--oftentimes when posting I'll open a new tab in the posting window to go to google and look something up. Can't do that anymore. Why on earth, if I'm using XP, does the posting window try to do a Vista/Aero thing? I shudder to think of the computing resources being wasted on that. It's not just the default theme that does this, the Cakewalk theme suffers the same issue. Why does the forum software feel the need to "look different". As I said on the "plug-in manager" thread: A beautiful UI is vitally important. But if the beautiful UI comes at the expense of lowered usability (including speed) then it is worthless.

SongCraft Hey Willy, You've done a great job so far on installing the new forum software upgrade. Very nice. Having said that I will admit that this ASPlayground forum software is not the best! IMHO the most popular choice is PhpBB and it has seen greater improvements to prevent spam by having options question/answer options on all new registrations on the negative side it's also the biggest target for hackers which means it's vital to keep the software updated and install security patches regularly, the next popular is vBulletin but it's the most difficult to customize and most often you'll see sites use the default theme (look), the another popular choice is Invision Power Boards (IPB) forum software! Those are the three most popular choices but the problem is that this ASPlayground software may not be compatible for 'conversion' to other software forum meaning that if Cakewalk had changed to a completely different software forum such as PhpBB, vBulletin or IPB then we would all have to start all over again including having to re-register on the forum. :-( So I guess we're stuck with what we've got (ASP), the compromise would be to turn this current forum into an archive and start fresh with another much better forum software software. IMHO vBulletin and IPB are probably the best choice followed closely by PhpBB, SMF, and MyBB , all are probably better than what we are using now (ASPlayground) but like most forum software each has their pro's and con's therefor it's a matter of what features are most important such as easy install/config, security, anti-spam options and user features that actually works well.

I have to ditto Beagle's observations. I use my work computer - the network that it's attached to has a fast dedicated line, but the workstations are aging. Most of us are still stuck with IE6, and we won't be upgrading our machines in the near future. The average loading time that I've run into when opening a thread is 30 seconds, then I have to click on an open space on a posting to get it focused so I can use my scroll wheel. Flipping thru the threads has just become a major chore. Maybe I can finagle longer lunch breaks to compensate.

This has been mentioned a few times, and is my biggest gripe with the new format at this point (see post #17, etc.). Susan G Quoting the poster is working for me (see above). The problem I'm having (one of many) is that I can't just highlight a sentence or two, and have that be the only thing quoted as I did in the past. Now I get the whole post re-quoted along below the selection I made, and I have to delete that before submitting. Maybe the fact that I'm selecting what I want to quote is what's forcing the poster's attribution. Also, for some reason, my reply to quoted text shows up in this italic font, so it almost looks like part of the quote instead of being in the normal new post font.

Hi- Yes, this works if you quote the (whole?) message, but oftentimes I don't want to do that, since it just takes up space. We used to have "In reply to <name>" in the lower right so it was clear to whom it was directed, whether the post was quoted or not. Thanks- -Susan

Highlight what you want to quote, then click "Reply to Message" directly, neither of the options. When you do that, you'll get the section quoted, but you're right, with no attribution, which is why I miss the "In reply to...". -Susan
