Am I the only one having problems with the time preference set in my user control panel changing on it's own? I have mine set for GMT-4 hours but it will change from that to GMT-1 hour to GMT-7 hours all on it's own. Yeah, I can change it, but why is this happening?

No, it happens to me too so now I just ignore it.
This came up earlier in this thread too so it's more than just us with the problem.

That's because those preferences are stored in 'cookies' you need to enable cookies for this site but if you're still having issues? it's due to your security settings and possibly due to you deleting said cookie.

I'm going to make a wild guess that the preferences are NOT stored in cookies.  I believe that I can go to any PC or use any browser on my PC and log in to the forum and get the same preferences I have right here with this browser.  Cookies are local to a particular browser/PC combination.

Wrong answer. I don't delete the cookies from Cakewalk. I don't change any security settings in my browser or computer (Mac and Firefox 3.5.2). And it's independent of computer as I went to another computer I have, connected it to the net, came to the forums here (I hadn't been on the forums or anywhere's on Cake's site either on said computer), logged on, and everything was as it is/was on my Mac web machine. These things change on their own, even during the same session.

  jackn2mpu,
I clean up my temp files and cookies whenever the browser is closed and still retain all my preferences from sites I visit regularly. For example: The time displays correctly for me, login credential are stored (I only need to enter captcha code), forum themes are stored!! It all works as should :-)

. You did not read my other post which explains 'security vs. features'.

. You don't know how to properly configure your browser and security settings.

. You don't understand the importance of cookies.....

Here's a quote from Wikipedia:
Cookies may be used to remember the information about the user who has visited a website in order to show relevant content in the future. For example a web server may send a cookie containing the username last used to log in to a web site so that it may be filled in for future visits.
Many websites use cookies for personalization based on users' preferences. Users select their preferences by entering them in a web form and submitting the form to the server. The server encodes the preferences in a cookie and sends the cookie back to the browser. This way, every time the user accesses a page, the server is also sent the cookie where the preferences are stored, and can personalize the page according to the user preferences. For example, the Wikipedia website allows authenticated users to choose the webpage skin they like best.

Hi All-

I told myself not to post here again until we heard back from CW, but I chose to ignore me!

The "Go to first unread post" used to work unfailingly in all forums, all the time, and now it's sporadic at best. If it's a long thread I know I've been reading I have to either go to the last post and work my way back or guess which page I left off on. I know Jack has seen this too, but does it bother anyone else enough to "whine" about it?<g>

It might not do any good, but who knows, and this, along with no "In reply to" are the 2 missing or broken features that are the biggies for me. I know some folks think we're complaining for no good reason and accuse us of spending too much time on the forums, but my point is and always has been that I want to spend less but more efficient time here!

Thanks-

-Susan

Seems strange I can add attachments in the Coffee House but not in the Sonar forum.

One other biggie to be added is getting no email notifications of replies when one starts a thread until that thread starter posts again in the thread. If I start a thread it's usually because I have a problem or question that I want/need an answer to and continually having to check if a reply is posted is like going to your home mailbox repeatedly to see if you've gotten any mail - you don't do it because it's a waste of time.

I guess people would rather settle for mediocrity in something they use instead of striving to make it the best it can be. That's probably why Cake has given up on trying to fix this. Maybe they should hire a consultant to fix this, someone who knows the forum software and can straighten it out. I'm sure there's some out of a day job person here or otherwise out there that can do the job well. Just because we don't pay a specific fee to use the forum other than owning a Cakewalk product doesn't mean we shouldn't have something that works, and well at that.

Oh well, I guess Susan and I are the only ones that do care. If people would put the same energy into raising the issues with the forum that are a problem that they put into the Twitter deal we'd be hard to ignore.

I really hate the new forum software!!!!!! 2009/08/24 18:07:26 (permalink)
I have been dealing with this thing now since CW decided to update it as have all of you.

They promised fixes and improvements that so far have not materialized.

The problems are many and here is a short of the ones I find simply awful.

1 Preview is broken. It will loose the post if you use the "full" posting view.

2 Quoting is asinine.  The new software is a beast to try to use for quoting. It neither makes quotes clear or usable. Inserting/adding quotes is near impossible.

3 Inserting text from documents can often cause the the posting window to go to a nonexistent web page when no such action was required or anticipated. This will also cause the loss of any message already typed in the window.

4 No indication what so ever as to whom the post is in reply to.

5 I get the impression that each post is taking up more room then the previous software did. This is in the main screen and in each post.

6 The posting window is not able to be moved out of the parent window. This make it hard to look at posts while writing a reply. The old software allowed this.

Overall the new software is not as good as the old software. Even the search is poorly implemented though it does seem to work better in finding items then it used to.

To me this "new" forum software is a huge step backwards.

This forum is still the best way for CW to get in contact with its user base despite twitter. It behooves CW to get this forum working at least as well as it did before the upgrade.

I know that it is very likely that this post will either be move or deleted by CW. I post it here because I am here most of the time I am on this forum. It is here I do most of my posting. Therefore it is important to me that this disaster of forum software be fixed ASAP or get better software. I don't care which.

Hi John-

Fancy seeing you here!

I guess CW is busy with other things, but I've never understood why they don't just outsource their forums and mailing lists to people who do that sort of thing for a living.

You don't have to look far for something better.

I don't like the new forum software at all. I recently watched a forum that I had been a member of for many years die a sllllooow death because the owner changed software. It no longer felt like home so most of it's nearly 15000 members left.

This new software that Cakewalk is using just doesn't feel right.  It doesn't look right, it's not as user friendly as what we are accoustomed to and it doesn't  play nice either. No pun intended on that last observation.

Regards,
Danny

This has got to be one of the weirdest things.  Why mess with something that was working reasonably well for something that stinks?

Like you, I truly dislike this new software for the forum.

The important factor is that it wasn't working reasonably well  - behind the scenes. I promise we didn't change things just to have more to do.

I never thought you guys wanted to actually torture us... or yourselves. But thank you for paying attention to this thread (and hopefully to the many others that echo the same sentiment). It's not riotously bad IMO... or cause for fear of an outright bloody revolution... but surely something within your budget can be done? Like ditching this software altogether? ;)

But seriously, there are some really cool open source ones out there that are just as robust, if not more-so...

Ok I believe you. But I think it does matter. When SVPworld Yamaha forum switched, it went from one of the busiest Yamaha kepboard forums in the world to something like 1 post a month.  Sorry to have everything running together but how do you quote multiple separate paragraphs with replies in between like we used to be able to do? And how can you tell to whom a post is in reply to ?

Well notice the indentions?  See how they line up (after I fixed 'em manually)?  I absolutely hate all web-forum software, as I think it's assigning a task to a web browser that it's really not ideally suited for.  That said, here's the problem I'm seeing.  This forum software positions your cursor to the proper level of indention, so that the names *will* line up with the text, but people are moving their cursors so that the text they are typing, ends up at the wrong indention level.  That's my bit, and I'm sticking with it!  ;)
