I missed these questions. I thought that the .rex file would have been automatically included in the bundle file, but apparently not. I'll put up a link to it very soon. It's just a series of short gated pink noise blasts. It's really useful for comparing what various reverb algorithms/impulses sound like and it's great for getting reverb settings right.

If you leave it where you know where it is (the desktop, perhaps), when you open the template and it says it can't find the file, you can browse to where it is and then choose to copy it to the project folder. Or yes, you can just put it in the project's audio folder (be it per project or a big general audio folder, however you have stuff set up...)

I must be missing something basic. I downloaded the file but don't get an option to browse to it. Added to the project folder as well but still not getting it.

I really wanted to thank you for this template and insight into your work flow. I can see that it is a really popular post and rightly so, there are some excellent presets for the Sonitus Eqs', FX reverbs etc. which are easy on the processor and sound great, not only that they give a good aiming point when setting up other plugs.

In fact there is so much stuff contained here that has fired my imagination that it would have taken pages and pages of words to explain to me.

This is a really inspiring and helpful donation to the community and is very much appreciated here.

My mixing template for Sonar 7 Producer Edition has been revised and expanded. This template uses only the included Sonar effects, with exception of CamelCrusher, a terrific free VST effect which can be downloaded at www.camelaudio.com.. This plug-in must be installed on your system to take full advantage of this template.

There are EQ and compressor settings on each individual track that should be saved as presets. I make no guarantee that these curves will work on any of your tracks! They are just my personal starting points.

The EQ curve on the master bus has dips in the frequency ranges that tend to be most problematic on the mixes I receive for mastering. Again, this curve is probably completely incorrect for your song, but it will cause you to listen to your mix with a different perspective.

I used the LP64 compressor on the master bus reluctantly as I didn't care for the VC64 on the master bus. I am essentially using it as a single-band compressor with a low-frequency side chain, i.e., the frequencies below 250 hz are not being compressed. 2-3 db of compression should be enough.

The meter on the master bus has been set for RMS. Your final mix output should be at around -20dB RMS.

A hint to the wise: when capturing individual tracks keep the PEAKS to no more than -6dB. Although it may seem counterintuitive, this will allow you to create cleaner and punchier mixes even if you choose to slam the mix with a limiter on the master bus later on. Trust me on this!

The various reverb sends can be used to create depth or width to individual instrument tracks. I think that you will find the Cakewalk FX Reverb to be surprisingly effectlve. They are different from the previous template.

The drum bus routing will likely create more questions than I can can answer, so I suggest watching this video on Two-Stage compression, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvHlx3XHpBA. In short, the "stage 1" compressor should be doing next to nothing during the quiet parts of the song, but working pretty hard during the loud part of the song. "Stage 2" should be set like you normally set your drum bus compression. 2-3 dB of compression on the loud parts should be about right. You can set up similar routing for a vocals.

I've also included a couple of "utilities". The steady strean of pink noise is used to help simulate the noisy conditions of being in a vehicle. This will help you set your relative levels correctly. Generally you'll want to have the vocal heard pretty clearly over the noise while the rest of the instruments are just buried underneath the noise. Try playing some commercially mixed tracks against the noise to get an idea of how they've set the levels.

The pink noise blasts through the RXP are used to help me dial in the correct reverb settings for a song. As the bursts will play quarter notes in the tempo of the song it will assist you in setting decay times and room sizes.

The MIDI track is a Cakewalk demonstration song called "Downtown". This is about as good as I can get the TTS-1 to sound. The vocal was done by a friend of mine, Michael Blaker. The original jingle (with different background music) never got used. Now he'll be immortalized forever!

That's the right place. I guess the slightly confusing part is that I've never changed the link to the template. The (older) version that you downloaded was based solely on WHEN you decided to download it. If you download it now you will get the latest and greatest.

Just as a reference I just posted a new track using it, the only changes I made here were to use a Stillwell 1973 eq on the drums other than that it is as I downloaded it.

It's up on the songs forum or it's the top song on my Soundclick page.

It was a cinch to setup and configure and tweak for this particular song.

The .zip file now has been updated to include alternate reverb settings that can be used in place of the Cakewalk FX Reverb, which will be of great use to 64-bit users. I used the Lexicon Pantheon for a plate setting as well as a large hall reverb. I must say that the Pantheon is by far the tweakiest reverb I've ever encountered and it is exceptionally easy to get a bad sound from it. I should get an award for programming some decent patches! I also created another hall reverb variant using the Sonitus reverb.

If you don't wan't to download the template yet again, here are the settings. Note that the master output level on the first Pantheon preset should be set its maximum ("0").
