Any chance that you include Buddy's fader and meters in an update. i really like those rounded fader knobs.

I include rounded knobs in the next update.

Mod Bod

Do the mods increase the contrast with the dark gray text on black?
Yes. In general dark grey background is now next to black.  Still under construction but adding contrast is one of my main targets.

Here's a big mod:  Would it be possible to create different "friendly names" for Inputs?  I don't care for how the program sees them but I would rather be able to select M12:1 or M12:2 instead of M12: 1&2 Left or M12:1&2 Right.
I suspect that this can't be done because the text selections are based on variables that could be changed down the line.  But if it could be changed it would really make I/O easier to understand at a glance.

Nice suggestion. This should be possible; all text strings are included in the DLL I have modded.  I must find correct 'left' and 'right' string to avoid surprises in the interface. Imagine if Sonar wants to ask you:

- Are you left or right handed?

Becomes

- Are you 1 or 2 handed?

The problem starts at M12:3, M12:4 on up to M12:12 which is the last input channel on my Soundcraft mixer.  Then I jump to Audio Buddy 1, Audio Buddy 2, Preamp 1, etc.  It eats me up that I can set it up like that in Creaper (which I just don't like) and not SONAR.

Can you change midi activity color on the meters? 2011/02/15 23:35:02 (permalink)
I could not find that you have addressed this yet.

Could you create a color option for the midi activity lights that are on the fader meters?

They are now red and keep me thinking that I am clipping (when they really just show midi activity).  These midi activity red indicators are found in several locations:  Prochannel meters, Console View meter, and Track View.  It would be nice to be able to change that red activity light to green or blue just to avoid confusion for some of us.

Thanks

I do a bit of hacking too. The UAD plugins can be really confusing, especially the Pultec so I drew a few lines on it to distinguish the different different ranges. I couldn't resist putting my old arm badge on it.

cool! Does this work with 8.5? Done any others like the Neve 1073? I would love to make that larger, or at least do some fattening of the line in the concentric rings. Can I download the Pultec or any directions on how to it?

I guess you were referring to me? That plugin is part of the UAD powered plugins from Universal Audio and I hacked their plugin software. If you have a UAD I could send you the software.

And I am limited to what I can do, it's largely just "defacing" the images. The Neve 1073 is a **** to use and I don't have the skillz to improve it.

3rd edit: I just noticed you have UAD-2 in your sig. I'll put a package together on the weekend.

It'll get green asap.

Based on this, I'm surprised that customizing all of this is not available to the masses via an options settings in the actual product.  The actual colors can be stored in a file somewhere that is editable via a settings menu (XML?).  I am a programmer and I do this type of thing all the time.  Maybe in the future?

Re:Can you change midi activity color on the meters? 2011/02/16 11:54:30 (permalink)
Have you tools to change colors of PNG and BMP in a batch?
All the Sonar's graphics elements are stored in PNG and BMP files. Customizing their colors must be a lot more difficult than customizing text colors.

Some plug-ins have Resources subfolders containing all graphics. Cakewalk could extract PNG, ICO, CUR and BMP files to a Resrouces subfolder. This would make customizing easy for everyone.

X1 contains 425 PNGs, 969 BMPs, 315 dialogs, 99 icons and 114 menus.

I need some opinions: what would be the best colors for Console View?
I tested black background but it didn't work (grey gain and pan values vere almost unreadable).

Btw, rounded fader knobs...

I haven't looked yet  - got to make the wide strip functioning now. It's trickier than I though, so many separate graphics elements.

Console view mod is not yet ready for public - many things still under construction. I do my best.

Installing a mod is easy - just copy the patch to Sonar directory and double-click it. That's it.

To uninstall a mod, format all the hard disks and install operating system and Sonar from scratch.   Alternative method is to uninstall mod in two steps: delete modified DLL and replace it with backup version of the original.

Does that mean it isn't?

If it is, is it the same as for FX chains or would this be a way to fix the oversight of making the FX chains indistinguishable from normal FX?

I haven't kept list of elements anymore after going to Restorator 2007. I extracted ALL data of the DLL and use Windows Explorer (view large/extra large icons) to search bitmaps.

My workflow:

- extract all from DLL  to a folder with Restorator
- make a copy of the folder and keep original untouched
- edit PNG, ICO and BMP
- import files back to DLL with Restorator
- save DLL or make a patch.

Re:I like (modifying) X1 2011/02/16 17:19:26 (permalink)
I LOVE this!  I am a programmer, and have spent countless hours in countless meetings with countless customers designing user interfaces.  No doubt Cakewalk has done the same, and our friend Panu comes along and beats the GUI to crap (in a good way) in SIX DAYS to the delight of most everyone that has tried his (hers) changes.

This is too funny!  I think maybe the UI designers at CW got a little too introspective with the current design (perhaps not enough "regular guy" focus group input).  I am still using 8.5.3, but purchased X1 to stay current.  I am convinced by the number of users that say that there is not enough contrast in the UI that I will not prefer it over 8.5.  Here's hoping the Bakers are watching, and put back in some of the customizations that they have apparently taken out of X1.

Good work, Panu
P.S. don't you just hate dialogs that are not sizeable?  MS Visual Studio is full of them...

Thanks Poco :)

Codename 'Orfeus' mod is now available.

Including
- reworked Console View
- green blinking MIDI activity icon in Windows Taskbar.
- bug fixe (Snap By icon was accidentaly copied over Narrow Strip's Post button)
- contrast added in several places.
- Matrix view logo is more Matrix now. Orfeus... yeah.

Once again: no warranty - you know the risks... etc. This mod worked in my setup, that's all I can promise.

I will make separate some mods later - if you like Control Bar but my Console View is too dark, you can download Control Bar mod only.  Cumulative patches coming later if I have time to develop this thing. X1b updates are promised.
