Here's a full Orpheus install on my system. LOVE the different colors on the track, bus, and mains faders. So much easier to see who's who. LOVE the new Pro Channel look. The black is a little sever for me but I'm going to live with it for a while and changing back is really easy. Thanks Panup for all your work.

Thanks for positive comments so far.
Black label Console View is not my last word - I continue developing it as my first priority. Some tweaks work better, some worse; there are built-in font colors in X1 and I can't tweak.  Total backness will also be replaced by color as soon as I find something suitable.

I have to say I was very pleased after working on the mod for 10 hours today! I got my first computer in 1984 and back then computers  had only 4, max. 16 colors - and they were definitely not light gray, gray, dark gray, light blue.

This screen capture is from very early development version (some bitmaps not even blue yet). It doesn't matter - I got a feeling this would look nice when done properly :).

This is too funny!  I think maybe the UI designers at CW got a little too introspective with the current design (perhaps not enough "regular guy" focus group input).  I am still using 8.5.3, but purchased X1 to stay current.  I am convinced by the number of users that say that there is not enough contrast in the UI that I will not prefer it over 8.5.  Here's hoping the Bakers are watching, and put back in some of the customizations that they have apparently taken out of X1.

I'm a programmer too. It saddens me that usability is a forgotten art and so much design is just to look cool and impress. One reason I didn't get X1 is because I thought it was hard to read - I'm sure the coders know that but the marketing people insisted it looked cool. Frankly Panu's new interface looks a bit ugly, but it's much easier to use. Sonar is not a piece of art, it's a tool.

One pet peeve is music software that insists on looking like hardware. The UAD Neve 1073 plugin (mentioned above) looks great but is a **** to use, knobs are not an appropriate user interface! I still use the old Sonitus plugins because they are so well designed. IMHO, the new Sonar plugins are a pain in the arse to use.

Charlie - so easy to install. Download the .exe file into your c:\program files\cakewalk\X1 producer directory. It the same directory with the original TTSRES90.dll file in it. Make a copy of that original and move it somewhere you can find it if things go wrong. Don't simply rename it as the new.exe file has to find that TTSRES90.dll file name in order to work properly. Run the .exe file from withinthat directory and it will ask you if you want to replace TTSRES90.dll with TTSRES90.dll. Click OK and it replace the file and create a backup called TTSRES90 Backup.dll

If you want to switch back either rename that back up file or import and replace with your original file. Very smooth install and since it's just changing bitmap colors etc. seems pretty safe. Eith way you get post and pre button and all kinds of other goodies.

It all does look a bit sinister doesn't it? Has a great feel though, the prochannel looks like blue anodized aluminum and the mods the the faders is really really nice. I can't wait for more mods.

Answer 1:
Use some debug tool to see what files it accesses. Check that patch does not create network connections.

Answer 2:
Mod enables gateway between your computer and my studio so that I can remote control your ProChannel.  :)  *LOL*

Sonar X1 mods: http://www.avaruusankat.com/SonarX1a_mod/

I've learned to use X1 efficiently.

I like edit filter. It isn't polished yet but accessing different automation envelopes is now easier.
I like the * Smart Tool. I like ProChannel - it should be VST, too, but I still like it.
I like the new Preferences layout. Easier access.
I like the feature 'Copy track names to clips'. Such a small feature but useful in many situations.
I like the automatic audio metronome that wakes up after messing around in the preferences menu. Sonar just wants to keep me in time.
I like FX chains.
I like the new 'Append project' feature. Cool.
I like the new Browser.
I hated Multidock but SonarX1Helper came and made a miracle.  Separate settings for PRV and TV, too. Wow. THANKS BEN!!!!
I like screensets. Not using them too much yet but I understand the potential.
I like the stability of X1.

However, there are several things that have bugged me for a long time. For example too small key bindings list. It does not bug me anymore because I realized it's possible to tweak Sonar resource file and change the size of dialogs! Bigger Dialog example (compare it to the orignal sized dialog!)
I also restored some 8.5.3 keyboard shortcuts by changing the dll file.

I did not learn if the Grid setting icon is in 'by' or 'to' mode. Now I don't have to learn anymore because I changed the icons and added text to them.
I also made a bigger PluginManager. 200 pixels more for plugin lists make difference! :-)
I removed some menu items from the main pulldown menu I never use. Now it's easier to find what I'm looking for.

Now I have the best X1a, thanks to SonarX1Helper and resource hacking. I will never complain of dialog window sizes and stupid key bindings anymore - they can be fixed faster than filling the Problem Report form. Recently I have received plenty of 'SUBMITTED TO DEVELOPMENT' responses from Cakewalk. It seems they are working real hard to get X1 fixed.

To balance this fanboy writing, here these things bug me:

Are crossfades on or off? You don't know before trying. :(
Scissors don't work if you're in [Clip] Envelope mode.  Additional mouse clicking needed. :(  (If they do, tell me how!)
Tracks in folder are no more intended and the dotted line is a bad joke. :( This could be fixed by hacking the dll but I have not yet found the right bitmap (if there is one).
Snap settings. Why go backwards? :(
Too big fonts, wasted space in both TV and CV. :(

I don't comment actual bugs - we all know they exist and they will be fixed hopefully in the b version.

Frankly Panu's new interface looks a bit ugly, but it's much easier to use. Sonar is not a piece of art, it's a tool.
You're 100% right. My main goals are:
  • Bigger menus where needed; if a menu gets uglier, I don't care. If I need to see key binding descriptions, I don't wan't to stretch that column every time I open Preferences/Key Bindings.
  • Context menu shortcuts that make sense (still under construction). Cakewalk proudly presented that in Sonar X1 shortcuts are re-thought. They are not. There are different shortcut keys for Delete Bus, Delete Track, Delete Node etc. Sometimes it's D, sometimes L. Insert MIDI track shortcut is D, why not M because M is free? Etc, etc...
  • More color and contrast - no more light grey text on grey background. It looks elegant but I need to see the numbers! I'm not the only one who has mentioned about this.
  • More information to certain icons. Look at the current AudioSnap's ON/OFF button. How should I know if black or white button means it's on? I never learned it.  However, everybody knows immediately that Green means something is ON, Red or greyed that it's off OFF or unavailable.
  • More information part two: in previous Sonar versions there were pre and post buttons. Now there's only Post. You must think Pre as 'not Post'. Designer probably thought it's simple (for a new user): one button to turn Post on. But also new user must first study what Post off means. This is drawback.
  • More information part three: mono/stereo icon is now only stereo on/off. Drawback. I will make it look like mono/stereo like it was before.
  • More creative look. I have seen enough boring, ultra stylish 'does not disturb anybody'  interfaces. Musicians are creative people, we don't need to be conservative.  X1 standard looks like it is aimed for the company's management team.
  • I use Sonar 1800-2500 hours per year in my recording studio. During last six years this makes 15000 hours. I try to utilize my experience and make such improvements that make my living with Sonar easier and more fun.

I don't know what happened to my 32-bit X1a but ProChannel does not turn ON anymore. I tried to install whole Sonar again but it still does not work.

Can somebody confirm that ProChannel works with Orpheus mod?

Re:I like (modifying) X1 2011/02/17 11:15:25 (permalink)
Charlie,

Unless I am mistaken, the idea is to create a copy of the TTSRES90.dll file, so that you have two of them.  It is very easy to do.  Using Windows explorer, navigate to the folder that contains TTSRES90.dll, click on the file (one click only - like Red October...).  That will highlight the file.  Press ctrl-c (copy) then press ctrl-v (paste).  You will now have two copies of the TTSRES90.dll file, one with the original name, and one that is named "Copy of TTSRES90.dll" (literally).  In Windows Explorer, it may be at the bottom of the list of files, as WE, does not automatically re-sort files when you do this.   You should make sure that you keep this copy in a safe place.  I am going to assume that you know how to create folders using Windows Explorer.  Make a "safe place" folder, named anything you want, and drag the "Copy of TTSRES90.dll" there so that you will have this original version of the file should you wish to revert, or if something goes wrong.

You will also need this safety copy for when you run vendor supplied updates of SONAR X1, as it may look for an original, unchanged version of the file in order to complete an upgrade.

Hey Chregg, spent some time recently in Stirling and Oban. On the way to Oban we stopped at Castle Arrrggghh (Castle Stalker), but could not go in since it is privately owned.  We also went to Castle Anthrax near Stirling and took the audio tour.  You'll never guess what song played when we started the tour.  It was a hoot, and a great time.  Scotland is great.  We loved every minute.  We like Stirling better than Edinburgh, though. Less touristy.

Can you send me a Border Collie?  I need a smart friend.
