scook It might be a good idea to avoid making product announcements about competing products or discussing the announcement in this thread just sayin'
I think the irony is the reason for the post ... CW comes out with a subscription plan and then Avid follows immediately. I think we are seeing a trend.
Except we don't have a subscription plan. Avid is going to charge you $30/month and after 12 months if you stop, you own nothing. That's subscription. In our plan, you can pay upfront and own everything plus get updates and new features for 12 more months. You can also choose to pay monthly and after 12 months you own everything as well. Huge difference.

Posting about alternative products is fine with me. I do not have or use other than Reaper for DAW software. So being informed is good for me and others who use CW products. And it may occasionally alert the CW dudes to something they need to know. To respond with "We don't say those word 'round these parts" only maintains ignorance, not knowledge.

The subject of the thread is clear, it is a Cakewalk product announcement thread. There are places to discuss other software. To my knowledge no one responded to any post in this thread with jm24 "We don't say those word 'round these parts"

I have had Cakewalk since 1991...Cakewalk 2.0 (still have my floppy disk)...Never have posted (the new SSO made it easy)...A few thoughts... 1. Cakewalk has always had the best midi program known to man... 2. With Cakewalk Sonar they broke new ground and have been progressing well with pro channel and other features 3. They are embracing 3rd party relationships like XLN audio, Celemony, Overloud, etc. They have had failures but seem to get the 3rd party thing (no one is the best at everything)... 4. The new subscription model is brilliant and they have innovated around this like no other company I have seen...you own the product after twelve months...take that Office 365... Thank you Cakewalk for a long history of staying ahead of the curve...

I think changing the names of the levels was stupid, at best. I have heard people describe themselves as an "amateur." I have heard people describe themselves as a "professional." I have NEVER, EVER heard anyone describe themselves as a "platinum." This change has provided confusion but NO value to anyone but the marketing dudes who got paid for pitching the change. Better would have been "King." Or "Emperor." Or something else a bit less inane than the name of a precious metal. "Platinum" is so five years ago. There was no good reason to change. 'Tis sad no one in the room said, "Not a good idea."

mudgel Platinum = better than gold.
Depends on the ruler you are measuring them by (as with anything). If going by conductivity, #1 = silver, #2 = copper, #3 = gold... platinum is #10 Then again you could go by Olympic medals where platinum has no place at all. If I were to throw the new version names at a new user, I bet most would latch on to "Professional" as being best from name alone.
ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

Believe me, any change is massaged to death with a zillion different opinions about what is or is not a good idea. Fortunately, fistfights don't break out with any regularity. The previous naming had a few problems. The base version was just SONAR X3 instead of having a name to differentiate it from the others. "Studio" - well, everyone works in a studio. "Producer" - that's a person who works in a studio. So is "Producer" less powerful than "Studio," because with Studio you get a full studio? Having the basic version as "Artist" kind of implies someone like a songwriter or solo musician using the software. "Professional" means it's intended more for professional work, "Platinum" is really valuable, so of the three, this is the highest-end version. So hopefully the different levels are clearer now to people not familiar with the program.

A few subscription questions: Is there somewhere in My Account or Command Center to see the date when you have reached the end of the 12 month period? I haven't seen any? Since I see that Andrew Rossa of CW has stated that payment is automatic, does that mean automatic payments will be charged continuously until you contact CW to stop or do they stop at the end of a 12 month period? I did the lump sum through Paypal. Will I be charged another lump sum automatically at the end of the 12 months or will there be a warning notice so that I can decide if I wish to make another lump sum?

I disagree with the statement that Platinum is "five years ago." An auto company is using that as a feature level on its new vehicles. Platinum has connotation in the music industry, and although many of us do not aspire to achieve that level of success, I have no issue with using it as version name. And I would bet that there is some hip hop artist out there that refers to himself (probably in the third person) as Platinum. Of course I really don't care what it is called as long as it performs its function.

Okay now I understand that it isn't a subscription model; thanks Cakewalk for explaining this. It was not clear at all on the website. Though I'm still clear as mud about the new names. Version 8, 8.5, X1, X2, X3 - they all are clearly identifiable versions of the program. But now... what version is being sold? Please don't say "Platinum" unless the next release is going to have another name like "Cobalt" or "Ruby" or "Emerald"...

After watching Craig Anderton interviewed by Steve Fortner for Keyboard mag, I got that they are doing away with versions. If you are paying or have paid (this year?), then you have (and will keep having) the latest version. In other words my version of Platinum will get updated (regularly, or continuously?) and then I'll always have the latest current version of Platinum, not X4 or X5, etc. So, I guess I am going to be subscribing in a year for another $____ ($150 for Platinum). I do appreciate the journey traveled to "platinum" was not easy. Google provides 413,000,000 hits for "platinum." So obviously the use of the word "platinum" is a so very pervasive, so very cool, and so very a clearly Pavlovian ploy. "The Platinum version has to be good, because it is the Platinum version." Jump on the bandwagon. Add "XP" to everything (2001), and of course one of the most annoyingly current memes: LIGHT GRAY TYPE ON BRILLIANT WHITE BACKGROUNDS. Just like the insanity spread through the manager's ranks when TABs were introduced. "Put tabs on it. It will increase sales." So tabs were everywhere. And of course: the "DECLUTTERING" mania of the last few years which has resulted in menus everywhere. Often Tabbed. All this reminds me of Stuart on Mad TV: "Look what I can do." Just fine for a seven year old. "Professional should still be top of the line."

Just because CW is located in Mass should rule out Mass cities. How about locations thought of as Paradises?

Hi Dave- Has CW said that somewhere? I can't remember now what the X3 demo was, but I though the trial was usually more the high end rather than the low end version. If it's definitely Artist, I might sign up for a month's membership to demo Platinum. Still deciding. Edit: Actually, the Artist demo would probably be enough, looking at the comparison chart again.
