Re: Melodyne Essential 4 Crashing Sonar Platinum

Redirected to this thread from another, although my issues are with Melodyne 4 Studio, not Essential. My limited experience confirms the issue is with split -and edited- clips. I can successfully apply 4 Studio as RFX to both clips of a split clip in the same take lane and to clips in multiple take lines -IF- I do not drag the clip boundaries or move them. If I drag a clip boundary or move it, applying 4 Studio as RFX will crash Sonar. FWIW, I pinged Celemony on the reported issues before upgrading and was assured of the following; 1. backwards compatible with V2 Editor clips - "We paid attention to backwards compatibility" 2. x64 not as stable as x32 - 64 bit "is even recommended" 3. ARA performance not as 'capable/efficient' as standalone performance. - "ARA currently does not allow multitrack editing." Perhaps split clips are interpreted as multitrack by Melodyne? I will follow up with Celemony as it is their product that crashes Sonar but some attention/priority/influence from Cakewalk appears to be in order as they were promoting the latest version of Melodyne and is not compatible with a fundamental feature of Sonar. My recommendation is to stick with Melodyne 2 Editor until this gets fixed. <specs for test platform> Sonar Pt 2016.03 / Melodyne 4 Studio 4.0.4.001 vst3 x64 / Win10 Pro fully updated / x64 / i5820k / 32GB

For anyone experiencing this problem, if you first use the Trim command on all clips you want to simultaneously use with Meldoyne/ARA, does the error still occur?

After upgrading to 2016.4, I was actually able to create 2 or 3 (in one case 4) region FX, but the system still would inevitably crash each time. Tonight, I will try reinstalling Melodyne with the new SPLAT. I will try 32 and 64 variations (the 32 bit install 'workaround' didn't work for me on 2016.3) Also, when the region effects were created, after editing, I could still hear the unedited vocal along with the edited vocal... Just a FYI on my experiences, and a way to hopefully keep this thread alive until resolution :)

I have had melodyne issues in the past. I have not had any yet in 4, knock on wood. I ALWAYS set buffers at 1024 before doing anything with it. So much so, that I have a note pasted on the bottom of my monitor. I paraphrase: "before doing anything in melodyne, save, close, and exit Sonar, adjust buffers to 1024 , open and resume work." PITA? You bet, but not nearly as much of one as having the damned thing crash.Interstingly enough, my problems often seem to occur if I try to reset buffers " on the fly".( that's probably more an interface issue than anything, but why tempt the fates.)

I too experienced several crashing issues with previous versions of Melodyne and SONAR. What ended up working for me was bouncing the Melodyne-corrected clip to a new track then deleting Melodyne entirely, as the crashes would often occur when attempting to open a project with Melodyne active. The other crashes occurred when attempting to create a Region FX. I couldn't resist the cheap upgrade to the Studio version of Melodyne so I bit the bullet, and thus far, I haven't had any issues with SONAR Platinum and Melodyne 4. However, my workflow has changed: I never use Region FX for Melodyne anymore. Too much instability in the past, so now I insert Melodyne as a plugin, capture the performance in real time, then go from there. Luckily, thus far, I haven't gotten any crashes, even with the plugin active in the FX Bin. We'll see if it holds up. I'm using the 64-bit version.

I'm having the same problem with Studio 4. It's the first time I've had Platinum crash. It sent error reports twice. I had to use Studio 4 in stand alone mode to be able to use it at all.

In response to stevec in post #92, I do get the crash even after applying trimming to the clip. This is with SONAR Platinum 2016.05 and Melodyne Essential 4.0.4.001, 64 bit. Delta 1010 with ASIO buffer size grudgingly set to 1024.

I've just kind of skimmed through this thread but I noticed something yesterday that may be relevant. I've been experiencing lots of Melodyne crashes as well, but I noticed yesterday that it seemed to occur on tracks with lots of take lanes, and it seemed to occur on takes that takes overlapped one another. When I rendered the takes out I was able to create a Melodyne region. I'm wondering if Melodyne is interpreting the take lanes as multiple tracks?

Vanblah, at least on my repro project, take lanes don't seem to have an impact. The project did contain a great many empty take lanes, so I removed all but the one with the three test audio clips. I still get a crash creating a Melodyne Region FX. I also tried isolating one of the clips to its own take lane, and I still get the crash. Also tried isolating the clip to a take lane and applying trimming to the clip. No luck, it still crashes on region creation. However, when I move one of the clips to a new, vanilla audio track, the crash will not reproduce. I routed the new vanilla track to the same aux and sends as the original track, and the crash still does not reproduce. Then I cloned the track without cloning its events, moved a clip to the clone, still got no crash on region creation. Cloning the track and its events results in a crash when creating a region in the cloned track. Cloning the track without events, then moving all the original track's events to the clone also results in a crash. So a workaround may be to create Melodyne regions on a new track, then move the region back to the original track. Yet in my repro project, the track with the clips doesn't seem to be inherently poisonous, because I can also avoid a crash by deleting most of the other (empty) tracks in the project.

danbottomburp Slightly off topic but i just wanted to check , I am definitely using Melodyne 4 but in CCC it is listed as Melodyne 2. Is this the same for everyone ? I have even logged out and back into CCC and it still lists it as Melodyne 2
I'm seeing the same thing here - I received an email on 5/12/2016 from Celemony announcing the availabliilty of Melodyne 4 Essential. I thought I would just wait and let the Melodyne update occur through CCC. The email from Cakewalk announcing Sonar 2016.05 arrived two days ago. I updated through CCC yesterday, but no Melodyne update was included - so I went to Celemony to get the update and install it. Seems to work fine in SPlat on my Win 7 PC - but I did notice that CCC says I still have Melodyne 2 Essentials - no Melodybe 4 found anywhere in CCC. ???

Just wanted to toss in my input on this. I installed the newest Platinum, opened up an old project, and over and over crashed Sonar when applying Melodyne. This was on split clips but not on take lanes, and typically happened on the second clip I edited this way. I hope to see this issue corrected rather quickly since it seems to be new to either a new version of Melodyne, a new version of Sonar Platinum or the combo of the two. This renders this part of the program pretty much useless, even if there are a few possible workarounds, as it causes a complete dump. Are there any official updates on this since the 5 weeks ago posting from Keith?

It seems that this issue has been happening in various system configs and version combos since some time in February at least. Sure would like to see some input from the Bakers as there seem to be some people unaffected by this. There must be something that triggered the incompatibility. My big issue was that I HAD to upgrade to Melodyne 4 from 2 (which I had via X3) because no matter what I did, there was no way to authenticate to their system with the old serial, the Cakewalk "fixed" serial, and the activation system. I upgraded to Melodyne 4 with a brand new purchase of Sonar Platinum and immediately had repeated crashes. Unfortunately, this was my intro to the new Platinum (to me) and the Lifetime upgrades for which I was so excited. To resolve this, I had to go back to an X1 installation to get v-vocal reinstalled so my old projects would work at all without a bunch of useless audio that I couldn't play because v-vocal was broken and when I replaced these clips with MElodyne, that was broken too. Unfortunately, my X3 didn't exhibit these things, so my first intro to the Platinum system was a series of predictable crashes. And then I find that these have been happening for months without a fix and decent documentation in at least two threads (one here and one in the Feeback Loop forum leading to this one). Don't get me wrong, this is not the "deal killer" or anything, but the motivation for me to "come out of hiding" after 2.5 years was to get to a new Sonar that was upgraded frequently and bugs squashed rapidly. When I've found that several of MY long-standing bugs still exist and this one, around such a prominent major bullet point as Melodyne are not fixed, it's concerning... All that said - what's up with this?

This is a known issue and we have reported several crash dumps to Celemony. They have acknowledged that it is an issue on their end. I have not heard any updates but my assumption is that it will be addressed in their next update. You can also follow up with them on this if you need more info. You can pass on any crash dump files to them.

Thanks guys, so not fixed yet! Noel, I do take on board that this is a Melodyne issue, but as Blades said above, Melodyne integration in Sonar is / was a big selling point - it seems just a tiny bit disingenuous to now just pass it off as a Melodyne issue and be done with it - if this has been an issue since February as Blades says, as a big customer of Melodyne, surely you are the ones that should be applying pressure for them to get their proverbial fingers out and get it fixed. Having dealt with their "customer service" some years back, I will not be wassting my time contacting them and will hope Cakewalk will have more luck with them than us mere Melodyne customers.....Please give them a good kick Noel!! Thanks Nigel

as i have found out, some Celemony issues are not taken very seriously by Celemony. they will punt if they don't feel like helping you. for example, Melodyne Studio 4 will not install on my backup PC (a PC where all my other music software works fine). i get install errors; i get VST scan errors. Celemony didn't feel the need to help out a customer who was getting a bit angry during the course of 2 months of pathetic "customer service," so they punted & told me to contact Cakewalk about this, which i did almost 2 weeks ago . . . and i haven't heard anything back from Cakewalk yet. terrible all the way around

JohnEgan I've been having all kind of what I thought were midi issues, with a recent project (revisited older project that had no functional issues previously), coincidently since Melodyne 4 Studio and Manchester update, I had converted an analog bass line to midi from Melodyne, ever since at some point into editing and playing it wont stop playing endlessly and shuts down audio engine, mouse still works allows various selections, even rewind on transport jumps backward, when held down and jumps back to play point, but stop or pause don't work I have to click close "x" icon to close project, and Sonar subsequently crashes. I can reopen and edit for a while, until it happens again. I hadn't made the Melodyne connection till I saw this post, so now not sure midi or Melodyne or both, and/or Manchester. So various possible update coincidences at same time to consider in my case. I'm still on Win7x64 though. I'm reluctant now to open any other projects in case they become corrupted as well. (I thought it might be an upgrade conspiracy by the Win10 people LOL, guess not) I should add I get Windows Stackhash error, their fix is to disable DEP control on application exe file, yet wont allow for 64 bit applications.
I'm having the exact same issue. Added Melodyne 4 to 1 track, everything seemed to go OK. Got ready to add to the next track, boom, crash. Re-booted the computer and gave up for the night. Next morning, project wouldn't open. Opened it in safe mode, got to the last bit of the load, boom...crash. It bears mentioning that my system is normally rock stable.

A brief update Tried using Melodyne as an FX insert not Region FX. Inserted, it opened ok and processed OK - all was great until I tired to freeze track, then it crashed - after the crash the project would not open until Melodyne removed. Whilst clearly a Melodyne issue, I think someone at Cakewalk / Gibson should be shaking a VERY big stick at Melodyne to get things sorted!! By the way, anyone know if Melodyne is such an issue in other programs with ARA integration - I believe Studio One has this?? Nigel

i don't use it much, but just had a quick play in studio one 323: - dragged a loop into track, set loop markers to 4 bars, hit transport play loopmode
- added melodyne essential 404 vst3 in track fx bin
- clicked "transfer" to get some blobs
- after the first loop, fiddled around with said blobs
- dragged another loop onto empty space creating second audio track
- added melodyne essential 404 vst3 in second track fx bin
- clicked "transfer" to get some blobs
- after the first loop, fiddled around with said blobs
- hit transport stop & wrote this
- went back and rendered the 2 tracks to audio (melodyne gets removed from fx bin)
- plays fine/as expected
- i5 laptop, win10, 8G, realtek via asio4all (woo! scary!) @ 44/24, 1024 sample buffer
so no, not really seeing any issues, unless i misunderstood, let me know if you want something specific trying?

Pwalpwal, that method doesn't use ARA at all. Not sure if that makes any difference though. Melodyne is less than perfectly stable for me too, unfortunately. It's the only thing that crashes Sonar fairly regularly for me, though there doesn't seem to be anything specific that produces it. Or at least I can't find it. But if I get a crash, nine times out of ten I just hit CTRL+M to create a Melodyne clip.

As I mentioned before these issues are from Melodyne and not SONAR. The good news is that I got word from Celemony that they identified the cause one of the most common crashes and will be soon releasing an update to address it.
