Yeah, or is the polarity inverted and you're using it as a mic?

I believe that is exactly what he's doing.

no, I meant.......explain!!!

what sound is coming out of the speaker? the input from the mic picking up the kick? isn't that going to be a feedback loop?

no, I meant......explain!!!

I'm not scared to admit when I don't know something as that's how we all learn. It's ok to not know some things (that's advice for some people on the forum....subtle advice....ok now I blew the subtle part! hahahaha)

no, I meant explain!!! lol :)

Ideally it would be the same size of the kick I think. I only had the technical aspects explained to me briefly once- but I've used one (that looked like a drum) on a live job I had and the sound was absolutely fantastic!

first of all, it's used as a microphone. I believe it does a better job than a normal mic because a kick drum is so big and moves so much air that a normal mic is too small to capture the entire sound of the kick. A bigger mic will capture more of the vibrations from the drum skins at the same speed, resulting in a fater and more detailed sound. A normal diapragm (or however it's spelled) will be troublesome at such large size so a speaker cone or a drum is used instead.

I think, and I could be wrong. Maybe someone else should explain this he he

thank you. that I can understand. So, the other mic is used for defining more of the "whack" of the kick and the speaker (larger mic) is grabbing mroe of the "whoosh"? (sorry for my technical terms there I'm a creative)

well, I had to look into my self and see how much I actually know about this - as it turns out, it isn't much, I'll admit that But I found out on the internett thingy that it is called a Sub Kick. There's an explanation here: http://namm.harmony-central.com/SNAMM03/Content/Yamaha/PR/Subkick.html with one made by Yamaha, which is the one I've tried.
BTW I used it with an SM57 next to the pedal to get the little smack from when the pedal hits the skin.

It's just wired up as a mic. Yamaha made a product called the subkick and it wasn't long before everyone figured out that this is all it was. What you get is just the very very lowest octave of the kick which you can mix in with your real mic (in my case a D112 shown) to taste. It's also a very hot signal so notice the 20db inline pad on the floor next to it ;)

what does the speaker do in front of the Ludwig kick? I don't know that trick. Are you rumbling the kick with an 808 kick through the speaker or something? please explain!!!! :)

My studio is not nice at all...and I really don't have much outboard gear, but it is a very comfy little cave for me to work in. Someday, I may even finish framing and finishing it!

Speakers and dynamic mics are pretty much the same thing, right? The source of voltage is just different...Amp voltage produces sound (speaker) or air pressure produces voltage (mic)...

That speaker cone is just a very large diagram dynamic mic... I like how it's free-floating using the bungee's though...very cool...

You can't be in Hong Kong, those cans don't appear to contain San Mig!

As for the dodgy wiring that's not bad for HK either. I remember, from the days when I was at school there, seeing a power extension lead that had three normal sockets and a fourth that was an unprotected light bulb holder. Lethal!!

He he - and fully adjustable too!

Although I'm relying on the fact that LEGO is mostly air to help isolate the monitors acoustically, there is a dense layer of foam where they do come into contact with each other, and a dab of blu-tak under the stands.

Do I win anything for being this sad
