i think sending the requests to Cakewalk in list form would be a great idea, provided we do a great deal more work in formatting the list. I've thought about setting up a bugzilla or sourceforge style feature tracker, but i probably don't have time... but a more organized approach is definitely needed. if we can put this in some sort of order, then cakewalk will be able to use it that much faster, and take it that much more seriously.

Very well said...all who have contributed especially planist have put in alot of effort and time to comprise what is in effect, possibly the best single resource for ideas and suggestions for Sonar 4 from current Sonar *users*. Hopefully planist is on the case, as development has already started on Sonar 4

hey, ron kuper already stated that he is reading this thread, even though he hasnt said anything to it yet. i agree, that a better organized list AND a priority list (3 wishes should be good) has way more chance of getting recognized by cakewalk. ok, when i added some of the new requests a while ago i looked through pages 1-6. so pages 7-11 are missing in the list yet. also, the list as you all have said has to be better organized. 1. if you have any suggestions on how to organize the list, post them here and i try to renew it. 2. second thing is look through 7-11 and summarize the FRs. i go on vacations next week, i hope i get the time. if not someone else has to continue. I love this forum!! Jeff

Looking through all the posts and add them to ther list with the forum interface is not very comfortable . CAKEWALK? Ron, Greg, ... IS there way of getting this whole threads text as a word document or some formatted text ? - it would be easier to summarize the output of each post and get it into a well organized list. Regards, Jeff OR: Another posibility would be if cake reads through all what we have been saying and work out a list themselves and then ask us for priorities and wishes.

JLGRIMES: i know, this is for 5 but you never know what cakes gonna implement so i add your great FR as well. "What pattern based composition is allowing a user to compose whole songs using prerecorded or user made patterns. They can be midi or audio or a mixture of both. Patterns would be classified into two types micropatterns and macropatterns. Micropatterns would be what is already contained in project 5, merely groove clips (midi or audio) which would allow users to duplicate patterns by dragging the clip with a mouse. Sonar basically already has this function with midi and audio groove clips, but there should be a user specified function that would record new midi patterns as midi groove clips (I know auto converted audio groove clips would be a pain). (Sonar would probably round to the next measure by default, but should be editable by users as well) That would speed up the process for users who want to use this function. Sonar probably could make this feature in version 4 fairly easily. What would be interesting though would be macropatterns. Macropatterns are essentially segments of a whole Sonar project that would be defined by loop markers. In essence you can think of the whole song you create in Sonar as one huge macropattern if you loop the start and end. Once a macropattern is defined it would basically still function as a normal Sonar loop (able to add more tracks, do piano roll editing, mixing, audio, midi plugins and Cal). The power would lie in using more than one macropattern. Within a project if a user defines a new macropattern, a blank project screen opens up that looks similar to a normal Sonar session. In here the user can either record, import, or copy from previous macro new tracks. The second macro can be used for the bridge of a song for example. Once two or more macros are defined, a user can switch between them using some sort of dropdown screen like the markers view or maybe key commands. When prompted to switch to a new macro command, the program will wait for the current macro to reach the end loop marker and then switch seamlessly with no gaps to the new macro sort of like Abelton Live. There can also be a macropattern arrangement page where users can chain various macro patterns in different orders sort of like a play list. Once sequenced a new macropattern can be created which can be the final properly arranged song. There can even be a mode that renders your changes in macropatterns in realtime to new audio and midi clips. I think this feature would allow users to organize different sections of songs even better than folder tracks. It will also allow you to audition new arrangements and help users decide on transitions better. This idea is sort of akai mpcish but also allows audio as well as midi to be switched (mpc's only do midi loops). This feature would rival live in the instances of previewing arrangements. Should Sonar have this feature or not? Or please offer suggestions on how this feature can be improved. "

from what i understand in the sonar 4 info thread is that the programming of sonar 4 is probably almost finished - so formatting the list should wait until there is info about what the actual features in 4 are.. i promise, i will be the first to open the thread "FRs for 4.1" jeff

Along with 32-bit float export, a nice built-in dither, with selectable noise shaping (corner and slope) and noise distributions (uniform, triangular, bell), limiting level for full-scale, and if possible, integration with a nice soft limiter with peak/rms stats for good judgement of full-scale level. (Maybe better integration with Sonitus multiband.) All this is to support exporting and bouncing with good fidelity and ease, not necessarily to replace a 3rd-party Mastering suite, but also so that it could serve in a pinch or as a "quick master" for certain projects.

Excellent work, planist..... But I'm having enough "trouble" as it is trying to write some music. Sonar 4, with all it's great new features, might make writing music even more difficult. But nevertheless, I will welcome Sonar 4! Vic ORIGINAL: planist ahh, by the way... thanks everyone for adding requests. it helped me focussing on what i want and what i actually need in Sonar.

Yes. This would be a great feature! ORIGINAL: JDC . . . lots of good stuff here . . . . I don't think it has been suggested - but the feature I would like to see added is a variable to the "add 3dB/decrease 3dB" processing editing tool. I would like to be able to type in the dB amount - or better yet - be able to highlight an area of an audio track, double-click and have a fader appear! Cool! Than be able to move the fader and WATCH the highlighted area increase/decrease in real-time. I don't know - is that just too simple and elementary to be regarded as unprofessional?

WOW - the new SONAR 4 feature list from cakewalk seems to be an excerpt from all our Feature Requests in the forum (and all your official FR) ... They will implement all the great Requests that were really obvious and hopefully even some of the "minor" things only some of us wanted. Cakewalks listening to their customers and thats great. Hopefully the workflow is even better in the new version. Regards, planist ps: I cant wait to start a Sonar 5 FR list ;-)

You are the man! This is from what I can tell a fairly productive thread...now it will be up to cakewalk to meet the demands of its consumers requests. And I thought simply wanting the file folders view as a service pack to S3P edition was a big order to fil...and it actually outraged people. Good Work everyone! On all your contributions...

Also...just for good posturing...I think a complete over hall with the aforementioned would be good and just one more step would be the addition of the merging of Sonar and Project5 in one platform...if they aren't current;y working on the concept. Whereby, it's not rewired! But systhesized into the interface, and maybe call it SONAR PRODUCER DELUXE!

I actually learned quite a bit by your suggestions. I think I know where you were going with this. You wanted to distinguish yourself from the novice user, and the folks that seem to have a propensity to complain on the forum, in hopes that your pleas would be heard. You may have accomplished just that. I for one couldn't make it through your entire laundry list however, and I'm willing to bet most others couldn't either. I made it about halfway with pretty rapt attention, so I guess my only suggestion would be, next time you do this, prioritize, and make it a bit shorter. Other than that I think it's great that there is a forum where the company actually listens and gleans ideas, and consumers are willing to take the time out to help them make a better product. Well Done!

There was a thread just a little while ago regarding wavefile picture cache. I believe this should be a setting in the global options, rather than having to edit the AUD.INI. I thought it was for some reason.

I thought it was for some reason. No it's in the INI file I'm at work now and don't have the name handy. All of the INI files are exposed through Sonar Utils along with the ability to add to the Tools menu and cleanup excess midi driver entries in the registry.

I personally have a few things I'd like to see in S 4. 1) Ability to change velocity levels in piano view just by dragging up/down velocity bars on the same screen as your notes that are mapped out.. Currently, you have to right click and change value.. FL Studio has done a good job on making things easier for the user in it's MIDI interface. 2) I'd like to see something added so that depending on how far left or right of the screen you scroll, it will speed up the backward/forward motion as you move through tracks to get to say .. measure 12 in a 100 measure track.. I was frustrated last nite when I had to wait on the stupid thing to scroll in a mediocre pace to the measure I wanted to correct. 3) Score view/edit -- I never liked the feel of this... It was way too easy to misplace a note on the staff b/c Sonar wants you to be right on the spot u want with no leanancy if you are just a tad over the line. I dont use the score view much, but every once in a while i do and it's frustrating.. Now, moving notes to another line is no trouble. I think b/c of how Sonar has made this so patricular, it makes it less efficient.. So if you try to compose a song without playing a note on a midi controller, you'll be there for days. I've sent off for my copy of Sonar PE 4 upgrade, I hope it will be as drastic a change as Windows XP was to Windows 98.. I bet there will be at least one patch update within the first 2 months of Sonar 4 after we've received it. I'm looking forward to this upgrade and dont mind that it's a once a year thing.

My wish list for a update patch for Sonar 4. I am posting this here as well as a new thread. If anyone has other items that I missed please feel free to include them here. One of the things that I fine not to cool with Sonar is the lack of any improvement to the MIDI side of Sonar. CW have not made any updates or improvements or new features for MIDI since Pro Audio 9. If CW see the future of Sonar as simply an audio app then please let us MIDI users know. Rant over. They did not fix the focus problem with the floating List view. The Console view needs a hi-light of selected track. The TV needs a hi-light for a selected BUS as well as in the CV. MIDI meters or activity indicators on a per track basis in both the TV and CV. I have asked for this going back to PA 9 Linking of all views. That is if one opens a view such as the List or Score view. Selecting a new track should show that track in the opened view. There should be a toggle to turn this on or off. They need to bring back and improve Studioware. Include a macro capability. Further improvements in the Mackie Control support such as meters and LED signal lights working. The ability to save and recall MIDI device setups and the ability to keep instruments def files pointers pointing to specific ports. The ability to name output ports both MIDI and audio. The ability to globally change output ports in the Syssex editor. A much better Score view. Multi lane controller windows in the Piano roll. A split pane ability of the TV. We have a split pane of the Bus pane from the TV. It would be nice if CW would do the same for tracks as well. Each with its own zoom and scrolling of the tracks to view different parts of the project in say the top pane and bottom pane. Stationery now time line with scrolling background tracks. Toggle on off. A project overview listing all files and MIDI clips with all mixer and plugins and bus routings that can be printed. It would be nice if it were graphical as well. The information should list file locations and details such as file type, bit depth and length. It would be nice to be able to change the sample rate. A key binding to reset all meters. Or a global button or both. As it is now it requires one to go to a pull down menu. Preset zooms user defined. MIDI editing from the TV i.e. Cubase SX3. MIDI Scrub via the Mackie Control in all MIDI views as well as other control surfaces. Auto zoom. Selecting a track will zoom it to a preset zoom. Toggle on off. All of the things listed above should have been in Sonar 1. The ability to use outboard hardware FX as a insert or send return in the bus pane in real time. And last but not the least. The ability to read the patch list of any hardware synths and create an ins def file automatically. With the cooperation of Roland with Cakewalk it seems that this is a no brainer for at least Roland gear. Best John

"Loop" record mode behavior without having to loop (means you can stop and dicsuss the previous take and still get the same thing). Tracks layers anytime a multiple take is made on the same track. Auto mute of any clip that is totally covered by another clip or all clips on a track with record enabled. (harmonies and doubling goes on another track, where it belongs.)
