Copied and edited from the thread: "Sonar 5 wishlist"

harmony gardens: My biggest wish list would be blending some of the excellent midi features of Project 5 and incorporating them into Sonar. I like it that you don't have to have more than one track for your softsynth tracks in Project 5 ver 2. (having both the audio track and midi track incorporated into one track.) I also like the way you select synths in Project 5, specificallly getting rid of the synth rack, in favor of a drop down menu. I would also like to have better implimentation of multi lane synths. For example, if I load up an instance of Sampletank, I would like to have and the tracks open in an Audio/midi track, and if I want to add an instance, I could just add an audio/midi track to the project, and point it to Sampletank, and set the output and input.
I would like the piano roll view expanded to include an editor page, like Project 5 has.
I would also like to see a track templet feature in Sonar, so that if you have a favorite vocal set up, for example, you could call it up as a templet track, and it create an audio track with your favorite fx and routing paths all set to go.
I'd like a midi pattern previewer, so you could have a library of midi patterns available to easily audition and apply to your projects, (again, inspired by Project 5)
I would like an effects chainer, similar to the chainer in Sound Forge, and the ability to apply effects with a tool that would work like the mute tool. (Drag across the top of a track, and have it apply the fx from the chain, and along the bottom to remove it)
I am so impressed with Project 5, and the way it handles softsynths. The addition of audio and freeze tracks and many other features, make it a very powerful package. When I'm using it though, I miss a few of the advanced features of Sonar, like the bus system, mixer, mute tool, POWr dithering, and although i don't use them much, the video and surround features. Sonar has proven they can do midi right in Project 5, and audio right in Sonar, but I still dream of a full integration of the best of both programs into one huge super host.

1. To be able to re-label the I/O's and to save I/O
templates for later recall. The device driver names don't
mean a whole lot to me.
2. Edit the waveforms .. directly ... slip-editing
and +/- 3db are nice ... but sometimes i need to edit the dang
waveform.
3. A song structure editor ... where I can use section
markers "A" -> "B" and be able to say things like "A B, Chorus, A, A2, Chorus, Outtro"
and say things about key and temp for each section ...
4. Envelopes to be more robust.
5. AAF import and export
6. Session timers with a link to a database .. so i can keep track more
precisely of time per task (setup, rolling, mixing, arranging, etc.).
7. Staff view to have usability improvements .. like how many keystrokes does
take to move something up and down semitones .. change a note from a 1/4 to an 1/8th ...
etc. Can I see what I'm dragging if it's more than one note please?
8. Gapping to be a distant memory.
9. Alpha-blending in the graphics ...
10. F-key switchable window layouts.
11. Support of the ActiveScripting host .. and retire CAL.
12. A no-cost upgrade ... all the above for free damnit .. didn't I pay enough
already? .. oh and throw in a free AC-3 encoder!

A right click "Duplicate" feature in the Clips pane or tracks thingy view for audio and midi clips.

Auto-Zoom the active track and auto-Unzoom the other tracks and center the active track in the window vertically so I can use sonar with my freakin' control surface properly like logic users can!!
What the heck were the 12-tone guys thinking? Don't they use a mackie control there??? It doesn't follow the track selection or autozoom with either my mackie control or my behringer bcf2000 (in mackie mode obviously, the only mode it'll work in with sonar).
DRAT. So close, but Logic is STILL by far the leader for control surface use. I keep trying sonar and ending up back with Logic. If 12-tone add the above features then I'll make the switch to Sonar and buy what comes after 4.02. But 4.02 doesn't have these basic features that ANY PRO DAW MUST HAVE. It's really very disappointing, and it would be SO EASY for them to add these features. It would move into a much more competitive position for pro studio use, whereas now everyone just defaults to that nasty protools (I HATE that PT UI).

2.An Audio Quantize , or something like Audio Warp of Cubase SX3.Or if you want to impress me i like an AUDIO ROLL editor like Melodyne´s
3.Envelopes for the Audio Clips.
4. Stretch audio like Vegas but in SOnar with MPEX algorithm ( I only Hold Ctrl+the edge of an audio clip)
5.An option for view the changes of Audio Waveforms with Fades and Envelopes of Audio Clips.

Like grouping audio tracks for mixing.
That way its easy to edit my drum tracks.
_____________
LaptopPop: my hot list
1) beat detective (as in pro tools)
2) tracks shown in mackie control match track view, including folders expanding/contracting and track hiding
3) tracks showin in console view - same as #2
4) nested folders (folders inside folders)

I would love to see a find tempo feature as you have in Digital Performer, where it calculates tempos between cue points. It saves so much time when doing film work. I would also like to see a real rewind and fast forward function that is common in all other applications. Instead of having to rewind in measure steps, this becomes crucial when spotting sound effects. I was also shown Samplitude recently and I have to say it has a couple of features which are to die for, such as being able to adjust the pitch of a clip in realtime whilst the piece is playing using the mouse and a bar in the clip. You can also time stretch the object in real time, just by dragging the corner (Digital Performer also has the feature), the functionality for this is present in Sonar, under the fit to time, but it is awesome just to be able to drag the clip.
I suppose in a way my requests are more in the way of post production type things and I am not sure that that is the direction Cakewalk are going in. Sonar is so much better than Nuendo (in my opinion!) but obviously lacking a lot of the post features...maybe one day.
But keep up the good work as I love it!
____________
bitman: I'd like to see native FX-Teleport style networking
and native VST support (it's time now).
____________
hv: Like to see better midi stats. Like a report on velocity distribution, where max's and min's are, etc.
Also like to see some better tools for altering keyboard midi response curves. I do this now through repeated use of the interpolate screens after recording which gets cumbersome. It would be nicer if I could just fill out (and save) a response matrix. Or better yet, draw a response curve.
____________
calaverasgrandes: I'd like to see a better, more unified setup window. As it is, I have to go to 3 different places to make changes, then restart the program. This is a pain when trying to isolate conflicts in sync.
ALSO
pretty please, can we record all the backing tracks in 24/48, then have just the vocals and leads in 24/96 or 24/192? It isn't impossible, I know of other software that does it. What would be really nice, though I doubt it can happen, isbe able to record diff sample rates at the same time!
And more control surface plugins!
