Here's another idea that's probably been mentioned elsewhere:

Give DXi tracks a selectable MIDI input track. The default would be the MIDI track created when you inserted it (if done via Synth Rack). You could change the DXi input to any MIDI track in the project. (Synth layering: you could have multiple DXis being driven by the same MIDI track.) Sort of a DXi or MIDI bus, if you will.

sonusman:

This would be a very cool feature to have and save a LOT of time in editing.

It would also be nice if Track Folders worked differently in a couple of ways. Such as:

Once you put tracks in a folder, they are "grouped" together on the track order layout. While this is handy in some ways, it is a pain when you want to put a track that is not in the group in the middle of say a group of drum tracks. In the past, I could put say my bass track in the middle of the drum tracks while editing. This eased "lining up" things.

Also, it would be very cool if we could have any OPTION to just be able to click on any of the clips in a group and have them all highlighted. Along with this, that we could also adjust fade in/fade outs/clip start/end/slip editing/anything else. There are times in production when I am dealing with all the tracks in a group at once, and am going to be doing the same thing to them. The thing is, during this phase, I will also have track "heights" very large, and might be basing my split points off of any given track. The way it works now, I would have to scroll back up to the Track Folder clip to cut them all at once. :( This just slows things down. But, there are other times where working the way it works now is just fine. Just some kind of Track Folder Global options would be great!

Also. Another annoyance with Track Folders. When I move a group of clips to overlap another group of clips, the group I am moving stays highlighted seperate from the group I am crossfading them with. Great, except, once I select another group of clips, when I try to go back to a previously crossfaded groups of clips, both groups are highlighted as one group. :( This makes future adjustments of one of the groups a PITA! :( It seems that both groups should STAY SEPERATED from each other ALWAYS!

Well, if anybody knows of ways around these problems, I am all eyes! :)

Blair Ashby:

- A gapless audio engine. I know you hear this all the time but it really shows as unprofessional when clicks and pops are heard in playback even though they do not exist in the files. When, as a Grammy catalogued producer, I have to explain the DAW is not playing back the files seamlessly because we changed the reverb it is embarrassing and much harder to justify my high rates.

- A Crossfade editor. NO DAW can call itself professional if it does not have a serious crossfade editor. I know you have the wonderful feature of zero crossing editing but three fades is ridiculous. See Pyramix, Sequoia, or Sonic Solutions for an example.

-High definition wave forms with the option of outlines with and without fills. See Pyramix or Sonic Solutions for an example.

-Precision looking and behaving audio editing tools. your tools work but, they do not look or act professional. See Pyramix, Sequoia, or Sonic Solutions for an example.

-Easy trim function in automation envelopes. To turn up a small section of an envelop I must add four nodes then grab the node isolated envelope and pull it up or down. Pyramix allows me to highlight the envelope, choose trim and type in a +/- db change. It adds four nodes and trims the gain. Very fast and easy.

-CD/DVD audio burning right out of the window. Every other DAW I work with allows me to burn right out of the mix window. The customer waits less for a disc and the customer is happy. True high end mastering is not the request here. (That would be nice but extreme ver. 6 maybe).

-Clip grouping. I know you have the excellent track folders but I want clip grouping even amongst multiple tracks. See Pyramix, Sequoia for an example.

-Clip based realtime effects. See Samplitude or Sequoia for an example.

-Navigation. A functional fast forward and rewind (think audio not midi) and key bindings for the scroll bar (curser independent scrolling). See Pyramix, Sequoia for an example.

-Macros that can use all functions in Sonar and be key bound themselves. See Pyramix for an example.

Hello All,

I would really like to see some way of "locking" midi port assignments. Currently, if an assigned port is not there or available, Sonar reassigns the track to another port. This can be a real pain if for example you did not turn on some piece of gear or the computer somehow looses commuication with a port. I have had it happen more often than I care to think about. Please consider fixing this.

implement little plug like sonar utils or plug in manager that covers the issue of plug in management and own tree/folder plugin structures..

and i second the locking midi port assignment idea.

BC added something that i hadn't thought about yet ;-):

Now - if only cakewalk coud add an option to make automatic, intelligent snap-to-grid resolution changes depending on the zoom level. *That* would make editing SO much faster and easier.

I have two suggestions that would greatly help me when I'm editing Audio tracks.

1. An expanded Undo History that identifies the clip and track, position in the time line, the edit was executed on and allows me to undo any item in the list regardless of what order it is in. The way it is now you have to have to undo sequentially and forced to undo things that are OK, that is if you can figure out which one is which.

2. A quick way to toggle between return to the beginning, return to the Now Marker, and stop at the current position. The way it is now you have to go into the Options Global and click the box on or off.

I hope this gets to the developers.
Thanks, David40

- I'd like to see an option for selecting the type of graphical interface you'd like to use. (i.e. Sonar 4, Sonar 3, Old School, User defineable.) A great example of this is the flexibility of the windows environment. It would make everybody happy.

I copy and pasted this. I didn't feel like deleting out the rest around this lol.......

I really agree with that one. I've been think that 4 a long time and wondered y that function had never been thought of and added:)

Here is a small list that I want done soon.

I would also like, in keeping with the over all self contained Track View philosophy, in track editing of MIDI data, not unlike what is in Cubase SX 3.

Here is another one for you!
How many times have you messed up good work because you accidentally left a different track armed for recording and ruined it?
I'd like to see a track "Edit Lockout" button added to every track so I can lock the ones I want, so they can not be changed/edited (or destroyed) accidentally.

At the risk of upsettig the Hall Monitors around here, I have not read all the preceding posts and the chances are that this wish has been discussed above. Nor have I done a search*.

But please, in the navigator, could it automatically scroll upwards a little more sedately when the little green box gets to the bottom of the window? Likewise, but the other way around, for scrolling up.

*I happen to have polished off two bottles of good wine this evening and I make it a point never to do a search before posting a reply in such a condition. And I would advise you to do likewise.

MAIKII:

"Recently upgraded from Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 to Sonar 4, currently 4.02 Studio Edition.

I am surprised that some functions in CWPA9 have been downgraded in Sonar. For instance--the Playlist function. In CWPA 9 one could add multiple files to a playlist at once, and one could drag and drop song files from Windows Explorer right into a playlist.

In Sonar 4, adding songs to a playlist has become much more tedious. One can only add one song file at a time to the playlist, and one can only do it through the playlist's own interface, no drag and drop from Windows Explorer any more.

Why was this function downgraded, became worse with Sonar? Will it be improved, at least back to the functionality it had with CWPA9? Will it be improved in Sonar 4.03?"

How about this:

Per-Track Description/Notes
--------------------------------
I know these can be entered on the Track Properties dialog, but I'd like a way of seeing them in the Track View itself. They don't even show up in the track inspector panel, or in the "All" view. I think they should.

Perhaps an extra tab at the bottom of the window: [ All / Mix / FX / IO / Notes ]

Copied and edited from the thread: "Sonar 5 wishlist"
____________________
harmony gardens:

My biggest wish list would be blending some of the excellent midi features of Project 5 and incorporating them into Sonar. I like it that you don't have to have more than one track for your softsynth tracks in Project 5 ver 2. (having both the audio track and midi track incorporated into one track.) I also like the way you select synths in Project 5, specificallly getting rid of the synth rack, in favor of a drop down menu. I would also like to have better implimentation of multi lane synths. For example, if I load up an instance of Sampletank, I would like to have and the tracks open in an Audio/midi track, and if I want to add an instance, I could just add an audio/midi track to the project, and point it to Sampletank, and set the output and input.

I would like the piano roll view expanded to include an editor page, like Project 5 has.

I would also like to see a track templet feature in Sonar, so that if you have a favorite vocal set up, for example, you could call it up as a templet track, and it create an audio track with your favorite fx and routing paths all set to go.

I'd like a midi pattern previewer, so you could have a library of midi patterns available to easily audition and apply to your projects, (again, inspired by Project 5)

I would like an effects chainer, similar to the chainer in Sound Forge, and the ability to apply effects with a tool that would work like the mute tool. (Drag across the top of a track, and have it apply the fx from the chain, and along the bottom to remove it)

I am so impressed with Project 5, and the way it handles softsynths. The addition of audio and freeze tracks and many other features, make it a very powerful package. When I'm using it though, I miss a few of the advanced features of Sonar, like the bus system, mixer, mute tool, POWr dithering, and although i don't use them much, the video and surround features. Sonar has proven they can do midi right in Project 5, and audio right in Sonar, but I still dream of a full integration of the best of both programs into one huge super host.

3. A song structure editor ... where I can use section

and say things about key and temp for each section ...

4. Envelopes to be more robust.

5. AAF import and export

6. Session timers with a link to a database .. so i can keep track more
precisely of time per task (setup, rolling, mixing, arranging, etc.).

7. Staff view to have usability improvements .. like how many keystrokes does
take to move something up and down semitones .. change a note from a 1/4 to an 1/8th ...
etc. Can I see what I'm dragging if it's more than one note please?

8. Gapping to be a distant memory.

9. Alpha-blending in the graphics ...

10. F-key switchable window layouts.

11. Support of the ActiveScripting host .. and retire CAL.

12. A no-cost upgrade ... all the above for free damnit .. didn't I pay enough
already? .. oh and throw in a free AC-3 encoder!

What the heck were the 12-tone guys thinking? Don't they use a mackie control there??? It doesn't follow the track selection or autozoom with either my mackie control or my behringer bcf2000 (in mackie mode obviously, the only mode it'll work in with sonar).

DRAT. So close, but Logic is STILL by far the leader for control surface use. I keep trying sonar and ending up back with Logic. If 12-tone add the above features then I'll make the switch to Sonar and buy what comes after 4.02. But 4.02 doesn't have these basic features that ANY PRO DAW MUST HAVE. It's really very disappointing, and it would be SO EASY for them to add these features. It would move into a much more competitive position for pro studio use, whereas now everyone just defaults to that nasty protools (I HATE that PT UI).

I would love to see a find tempo feature as you have in Digital Performer, where it calculates tempos between cue points. It saves so much time when doing film work. I would also like to see a real rewind and fast forward function that is common in all other applications. Instead of having to rewind in measure steps, this becomes crucial when spotting sound effects. I was also shown Samplitude recently and I have to say it has a couple of features which are to die for, such as being able to adjust the pitch of a clip in realtime whilst the piece is playing using the mouse and a bar in the clip. You can also time stretch the object in real time, just by dragging the corner (Digital Performer also has the feature), the functionality for this is present in Sonar, under the fit to time, but it is awesome just to be able to drag the clip.
I suppose in a way my requests are more in the way of post production type things and I am not sure that that is the direction Cakewalk are going in. Sonar is so much better than Nuendo (in my opinion!) but obviously lacking a lot of the post features...maybe one day.
But keep up the good work as I love it!

Like to see better midi stats. Like a report on velocity distribution, where max's and min's are, etc.

pretty please, can we record all the backing tracks in 24/48, then have just the vocals and leads in 24/96 or 24/192? It isn't impossible, I know of other software that does it. What would be really nice, though I doubt it can happen, isbe able to record diff sample rates at the same time!
And more control surface plugins!

small ones:

1. possibility to highlight and then move more tracks (that dont lie beside each other) at one time down or up.

2. possibility to move tracks from one folder to another without removing them from the folder first.

3. having the track options (eg. output, input, name, bank, etc for all highlighted tracks) by right clicking on one of them (wihtout having to use the menu)

I'd really like some sort of "notepad" field in each track, to keep track of what amp settings, mic used, etc for audio. I've been getting by using creative track names, but they get lengthy sometimes.

I hope most of P5 v.2's enhancements carry over to Sonar 5 - they'd be just as useful in the more linear Sonar workflow. If I wasn't so happy with both programs, I might be whining about a "Cubase/Nuendo" overlap where the more expensive product lacks it's little brother's features. We don't need to go there, though.

- Fewer windows - the more information I can see in Track view, the clearer the workspace and the more things make sense. I'd like to be able to edit MIDI either "in track" (ala PT and Cubase) or in a tightly integrated pane like P5. Also, editing tempo as an envelope in a master track (or perhaps just a "tempo track") takes another window out of the equation.

-On a similar note, I LOVE the ability to adjust effects parameters in the track inspector.

- Ability to adjust MIDI Velocity "bars" for each note in the piano roll (instead of below the piano roll or, worse, manually in a window). Heck, why not steal P5's piano roll outright - I wouldn't mind a "step" option either!

- Ability to save complete device chains (DXI, effects, etc.).

- I generally prefer the quicker speed of P5's tempo adjuster (click on the tempo and drag to quickly go from, say, 120 bpm to 80 bpm; double click and enter a tempo manually to make finer adjustments). I also like P5's ability to record those adjustments!

On the other hand, I hope Sonar 5 goes beyond that and really adds some new Audiowarp/Beat Detective-style audio manipulation and better timestretching algorhythms for Groove Clips.

it came up in the other thread - id vote for an automated poll as an extra forum item, hosted by cakewalk.

post the feature, it appears on the board, with numbers from 1-5 you can choose from, then, after a while appears a list of the most wanted features --> and cake has a real good customer overview.

I'd love to see a "bounce to MPEX" option added to Groove Clips. The feature should basically pass on the loop information from the Groove Clip to the MPEX-algorithm, apply MPEX-looping and do a bounce of that track to .wav.
By having the bounce option, you’d get the quick looping that GC’s offer, and the benefit of getting the best sounding looping once a track is in place and ready for mixdown.

RE: Sonar 4: Future Features 2005/07/09 04:40:58 (permalink)
I like the pattern oriented features of P5. I can always use P5, but it would be nice if I could use that approach directly in Sonar. being able to create small patterns easily that I can then mix and match and overlap to create songs. You can sorta do all that in Sonar too, but its a little more interactive in P5. Would be nice if I could create a few multi-track patterns that include midi and audio tracks, and later be able to easily assemble them into songs. I used to use the Opcoce Vision sequencer which worked like this and it was such a great and flexible way to work.

But my main request..practically the only thing I care about.. Digital Performer has a concept whereby you can have a master track which has a smpte timeline..and then you can have any number of "Chunks" which can be laid down on top of the master. To explain that better, what it means is that in film scoring I can create a musical section for a cue..that has its own set of tracks, instruments, midi channel assignments, etc.. I can create one of these for each cue..except I don't have to create a seperate file for each one..they are all within the one project file. And I can then lay them all down on the master track..so that they are all sitting on the master timeline of the film, but each have their own individual track and mixer settings, tempo map, etc..

Most people end up having to create a totally seperate project for each cue in a film..which is fine, but then you don't have a way to lay them all down on one master track. this is where DP's Chunk feature and that ability is unmatched by any other sequencer. If Sonar did this..then I would finally sell my mac.
