I haven't heard anyone else discuss this yet, though I haven't scrolled through all 12 pages of this thing. I want to be able to export mix settings (plugins & settings) to other project files with the same track names. Here's the deal, I record bands with live drums and usually end up with 8-12 drum tracks alone. I usually setup a template with what I think I'll need before I record and then record all the drums for each song, then the other instruments. When I mix, I get one song sounding good, and then I have to copy all the effects, their settings and grouping to the other songs (which is a pain when you're doing 5-12 songs). Now obviously, there will be some setting changes from song to song, but the overall sound (eq's and such) should sound the similar. When I mix at my friends studio (from 2" tape through a console), I spend a bunch of time getting the first mix right, print that and then the 2nd track goes through all the same channels/FX and I'll make the changes necessary for that track without having to zero that mix and start from scratch. I'd like to be able to import/export mix settings or environments some how so that I wouldn't have to manually recreate this stuff. This would be a HUGE time saver for me!

Say you set up your first song with all the settings, effects and record your band. You mix and you're happy.

NOW, all you'd have to do is take that first song, delete all the wavs and save it as your new template for that band or whoever. Saving as a template saves all your track names, effects, settings and all.

This is what I do when I record my pastor's radio program: There are two tracks, one for him and one for a song that he uses. I have his track armed, the second track muted, have compression on an aux for the 2nd track and have Ozone to boost up his vocal, but not the song cause that's usually hot already. AND I have the video time window open so I can see better when his time is up. When I open up the template it's all there. All I have to do is press record.

If I understand your comment correctly you want a feature that will apply those "same" effects to projects already created, but if you can set up a template first, then you'd have what you want.

I've been giving S4 a fair try-out by now. Thank you to Cakewalk for all the many really great new features. There are 3 features I have requested before that has not been implemented that disappoints me.

Insert DXi synth in track view:
Why can I not right click in the track view and have the option to insert a synth track? I can insert a midi track and a audio track at any place I want, but not a synth track. I have to do that in the synth rack or in the menu and then it is added right at the bottom.

Track marker font size:
The font size of the track markers should be customizable. The fonts are real tiny (standard size). When I do a recording I want to stand further back from the computer screen, but still want to be able to watch the screen to see the markers to know what to do (watch chord changes etc).

Default destination bus for new audio tracks:
When inserting a new audio track it will always default to send to the sound card out bus. I want to be able to specify a master bus where every new track should go to.

G7Sharp9,
"If I understand your comment correctly you want a feature that will apply those "same" effects to projects already created, but if you can set up a template first, then you'd have what you want. "

I do have a template created before hand, but I often find that the tools that worked for one band don't necessarily work for the next by the time I get mixing. For example, it is not uncommon for me to have 5 songs recorded with 24+ tracks to mix (not even counting overdubs on the same tracks) and key/tempo changes. While it is possible to delete the wave's from the first mixed track and copy the wave's from the next, I have now lost all mixing I had done to other tracks which were different from the 1st project (ie a backing vocal or some kind of automation we did while tracking to remove a sound or something). Not a huge deal, but then my new project may not line up correctly because of tempo changes and what have you. If any of you have experienced this, you know how aggravating it is.

In addition, say we do all the mixes, burn a disc and realize that the Kick is too loud and needs to be eq'ed as well. We pull up one project and fix it and say 4 or however many more need to have the identical changes. I now have to write down the new settings (and save the new preset) and open up all the others and manually change them all. It would be great if I could click on file-import, select the project and then the individual tracks, maybe the actual setting, and their destination in my new project. That would still require me to open all the projects and do that multiple times, so maybe it would be better to open the file with the new changes & export the settings for the selected tracks to the project files that I select.

The new work flow enhancements in SONAR 4 are saving me a great deal of editing time, but this is currently my biggest waste of time (other than artists who don't know their parts, and drummers that have never heard of a metronome, let alone practiced with one).

Thanks for your reply G7Sharp9. I didn't mean to blow off your suggestion, I just feel like it's a laborious work around for my needs and I'm hoping I'm not the only one (or roughly). I really don't feel like it's a niche feature or that it's all that specialized, I'm just recording rock bands. Do any other Sequencers have a similar option (or superior to my suggestion)?

I also want to second Sepheritoh's suggestion of a default destination bus.

I would love to see the ability to save your envelope fade patterns instead of just working with the few that are pre-sets such Linear Fade, exponential fade, etc. You can always make your own enevelopes, but you can't save them.

here are some wishes from "john":

"My wish list for a update patch for Sonar 4.
If anyone has other items that I missed please feel free to include them here.

One of the things that I fine not to cool with Sonar is the lack of any improvement to the MIDI side of Sonar. CW have not made any updates or improvements or new features for MIDI since Pro Audio 9. If CW see the future of Sonar as simply an audio app then please let us MIDI users know. Rant over.

They did not fix the focus problem with the floating List view.

The Console view needs a hi-light of selected track/s.

The TV needs a hi-light for a selected BUS as well as in the CV.

MIDI meters or activity indicators on a per track basis in both the TV and CV. I have asked for this going back to PA 9. The MIDI activity view as a system tray gadget is useless.

Linking of all views. That is if one opens a view such as the List or Score view. Selecting a new track should show that track in the opened view. There should be a toggle to turn this on or off.

They need to bring back and improve Studioware.

Include a macro capability.

Further improvements in the Mackie Control support such as meters and LED signal lights working.

The ability to save and recall MIDI device setups and the ability to keep instruments def files pointers pointing to specific ports.

The ability to name output ports both MIDI and audio.

The ability to globally change output ports in the Syssex editor.

A much better Score view.

Multi lane controller windows in the Piano roll.

A split pane ability of the TV. We have a split pane of the Bus pane from the TV. It would be nice if CW would do the same for tracks as well. Each with its own zoom and scrolling of the tracks to view different parts of the project in say the top pane and bottom pane.

Stationery now time line with scrolling background tracks. Toggle on off.

A project overview listing all files and MIDI clips with all mixer and plugins and bus routings that can be printed. It would be nice if it were graphical as well. The information should list file locations and details such as file type, bit depth and length. It would be nice to be able to change the sample rate.

A key binding to reset all meters. Or a global button or both. As it is now it requires one to go to a pull down menu.

Preset zooms user defined.

MIDI editing from the TV i.e. Cubase SX3.

MIDI Scrub via the Mackie Control in all MIDI views as well as other control surfaces.

Auto zoom. Selecting a track will zoom it to a preset zoom. Toggle on off.

The ability to use outboard hardware FX as a insert or send return in the bus pane in real time.

The ability to import more then one song into the playlist at a time.

All of the things listed above should have been in Sonar 1.

And last but not the least. The ability to read the patch list of any hardware synths and create an ins def file automatically. With the cooperation of Roland with Cakewalk it seems that this is a no brainer for at least Roland gear. "

thanks

best, planist

today i waited 1.24 minutes untill sonar had drawn the waves for a 10sec imported clip..
Was the audio engine running the whole time -- probably was, and at high CPU I bet. The waveform drawing happens on a low priority background thread to avoid interfering with playback and input monitoring.

Even with that, I've never seen waveform drawing come up that slowly. More typical list a 2-3 seconds to render a 4-5 minute track.

Here it is more like 3-4 seconds for a 16 bit/44.1 MONO 4-5 minute track
P4 2.4 GHz , a separate 160 GB HD ( with 8mb cache) on its own IDE channel .
of course my results are when NOT playing anything , thanks for explaining that
"The waveform drawing happens on a low priority background" - it does make sense !

I wonder what do you have to say about planist's "All of the things listed above should have been in Sonar 1. " ... LOL

I do agree with planist about all the other things needed in Sonar !

hi ron,

no i wasnt playing anything - its not normal either - sometimes sonar draws perfectly fast, sometimes it tkes ages. maybe its my setup, but then it wouldnt draw it one time fast and one time slowly...

but i read some posts reporting slow wave drawings from other members - there seems to be a problem one some other machines as well...

well, lets see what the new beta testing can do ;-) ...

Hi-

I haven't read through all of these, so maybe it's been mentioned. I also added it to another thread.

I'd like a shortcut to close all folders at once.

Also, when assigning a control to a group, I'd like to know if it's already in use. Maybe just a grey checkmark next to those groups already used for something else. Pls let me know if something like this exists and I'm just missing it.

[BTW, SONAR 4 wasn't included in the drop-down on the CW features request site last I checked (yesterday).]

Thanks-

Add a graphical pitch/time editor utilizing the MPEX pitch bending / time stretching algorithm. People are already starting to discover the power of MPEX for surgical edits on vocal and instrument parts, but as can be seen in this thread, they are encountering problems because it applies bending/stretching factors coarsely and globally over the entire selection. This forces selection of the middle of a passage, which is awkward and rough, and results in audible artifacts due to end effects at the selection boundary.

Consider a graphical editor that displays the actual pitch (and/or tempo) over the whole selection, and a nudgable envelope that defaults to the actual but allows you to then set the target pitch (and/or tempo) over the surgical regions a-la Antares, Melodyne, and VoiceTweaker. This way, one could simply select an entire phrase and nudge just the places that needed to be fixed. This would be smoother in the middle, and result in no pops at the ends. Adding this interface would unleash the full power available in the MPEX pitch bending / time stretching technology for performing surgical edits.

In addition, such an interface would allow for easy creation of time and pitch envelopes.

I wonder if it's the difference between drawing waveforms that already exist in the Picture Cache folder and needing to compute new ones that don't exist? Brand new ones will take some time, while existing ones will be painted rather quickly.

To improve waveform drawing speed, increase the size of the Picture Cache folder. This gives more room for leaving recently computed waveforms around so they are drawn faster the next time you load a project. Edit AUD.INI to include the line PicCacheMB=<size in MB>. I set mine to 500MB and can get quite a few projects to open quickly without needing to recompute waveforms.

the fixes are good, quite a lot for a 0.1 patch, thank you cakewalk!!!

but the "new" section seems to me a little short - like always -

- Sample Accurate Recording or at least auto slide!!! Dont want to slide all my recorded material everytime right after it has been recorded because of timing issues. surprisingly few threads on that..!! obviously on all platforms..??

I had this problem with my Echo Layla 24 when I used it in ASIO mode. The soundcard manual even stated to use it in ASIO mode over WDM. When I switched to WDM, I don't have that problem anymore. I don't know if my recordings are "sample accurate", but they are good enough for me to not notice a problem.

Moral of the story.

To achieve this, I think Sonar would need to focus on just using one driver (probably WDM would be the best since Microsoft supports it and Cakewalk don't plan on going to Mac anytime soon.)

This will probably considerably reduce the number of audio interfaces compatible with Sonar but whats the use of compatibility if it gives you headaches.

Sonar 4 is being touted for workflow enhancement, but I'd like to see these three things added, which are all pretty big workflow disadvantages for me in S3 (I'm just now waiting for my copy of S4 to arrive, but as I understand it, these haven't changed since S3).

- Pause button, so you can pause playback while still maintaining the On Stop, Rewind to Now Time. This gets my "audio metronome in S3" vote for most glaring ommission.

- The ability to stop the boxes from popping up every time you copy, cut, delete or paste anything, asking if you want to include tempo, meter changes, etc. This becomes a major annoyance after a while of doing a lot of edits, as I never ever want to include those things.

- The ability to maintain the folder you are importing from, or at least to be able to import a group of files at once and have them go into subsequent tracks.

And yeah, I'll echo the request above to please fix the sample accuracy issue that so many have, where your newly recorded tracks end up ahead of where they should be (doesn't happen in Adobe Audition or Tracktion on my same system, so why is this such a PITA in Sonar?).

In ASIO mode, can you not just use the "offset" box and set the number to the "appropriate amount"?

Also, is there any chance that your problem is related to the IgnoreMidiInTimeStamps fix? Does audio stay in sync with aduio under asio drivers, but midi is woefully out of time? If so, maybe this fix would be useful to you. If not...carry on.

RE: SONAR 4.1 - Future Features (revisited) 2004/11/03 20:35:11 (permalink)
1. Engine

Arm a track and record while playback

(This should be a priority)

posiblility to set different loops. and a button to toggle between them..

(Drooling over the possibilities. but let me rephrase that one please.)

possiblility to set different loops. and a key bindable command to toggle between them in musical time (Basically a pattern chaining function. Study the Akai mpc 2000 "next sequence" function and "song mode" if in doubt of what I mean)..

2. Editing these are addition to yours

Pro tools style duplicate function which can copy and paste a loop right after the original one with the press of one key.

2.1 AUDIO

- I'd really love to see a way to quantize audio, and that means some Recycle type functionality for chopping up audio clips. The algorithms used in the Remove Silence feature may be a starting point, (but that feature is too crude to be useful WRT setting cut thresholds and is not note value-aware). eg REX import

Let me elaborate on this. If Sonar would make just a tad bit more improvements to its loop construction view there would be no need for REX compatibility. What I would like is "L" and "R" markers in the loop construction view that can be snapped to the slice markers. This would be a better way of looping audio. Also add the option of generating a midi file that can play the slices using Cyclone or maybe a new DXi. Cyclone might me redesigned because it can only play up to 16 slices but would be well worth it. If this was implemented, we would be able to use all of Sonar's midi editing commands to audio. (Drooling over the possibilities)

Track View

Why the patch select screen don't have an option for keeping the screen up when I am trying to audition patches?

I think the idea was to have us use the patch browser (which is right clicking the patch menu). This stays up until you close out. But I agree the patch select screen could use this option as well because it organizes patches by banks and don't overwhelm you like the patch browser does.

Customization

Free Keybindings, in S4 many but not all

I think Cakewalk should make it a goal to be able to bind just about every function Sonar can do. It probably should get to a point where some features are ONLY available as keybindings.

- an up to date metronome that is highly configurable.

Thanks for the audio metronome which is highly more stable than it predecessor but actually some improvements can be made here. What would be nice would be an option to change the timebase to something other than quarter notes. I would think 1/4 1/4T, 1/8, 1/8T, 1/16, 1/16T would cover the basics.

And yeah, I'll echo the request above to please fix the sample accuracy issue that so many have, where your newly recorded tracks end up ahead of where they should be (doesn't happen in Adobe Audition or Tracktion on my same system, so why is this such a PITA in Sonar?).

This is a driver issue.

I think Sonar is trying to be compatible with too many drivers.

I apologize for not reading all the pages here so I don't know if this has been requested already.

I don't know how easy this would be or if it's already implemented and I don't know; but I would love to see:

MIX AUTOMATION SETS

I could allow for different mixes without having to use seperate files. If I want to use the same automation for a vocal in another mix I could simply copy that automation to another set.

This may be achievable by recording a MIDI track with the controller information. Then to change automation data simply mute or unmute MIDI tracks that contain the controller info. I assume this is different than Arm for Automation for tracks.

Anyone have have experience with my resuest

just for the record ... Ron posted in another thread concerning gapping audio:

The fix involves setting a new variable in your AUD.INI file. (I'm pretty sure this is all in the README). In AUD.INI, try changin this variable:

[Wave]
EnableLiveADCRecalc=<0 or 1> (default = 1)

When set to zero, SONAR will bypass nearly all of the expensive work that needs to get done to recompute PDC after an audio signal routing change. Your audio will be slightly out of sync -- imperceptibly if you are running at very low latency -- but there won't be a gap.

Regardless of how this variable is set, PDC gets recomputed when you stop and restart playback.

this is by far my longest awaited change - you can switch PDC on and off ! finally - its great!
although the AUD.ini parameters could be implemented in the program as a menu to change them on th fly..

how is your experience with that?
