Sonar + Windows 10

Will the new Sonar be compatible with Windows 10?  I'm nervous about buying it now knowing I will definitely be upgrading to Windows 10 the moment it is released.

Thanks!

I burst out laughing when I saw some 'features' of W10 - see below snippet from the BBC News web site.

  • show where their car is parked"

This begs the question: Do I need to leave my Windows Phone in the car for this to work? And another: Does this mean I have to buy a Windows Phone?

Cakewalk have been fast out of the blocks with compatability to Windows releases before. I don't see why not with the next windows release. I dare say they already have a win 10 test machine.

I think you are missing the important part - that is what the voice assistant can do. Not the general feature set of Windows 10.

Re: Sonar + Windows 10 2015/01/24 07:29:54 (permalink)
In retrospect..... The transition between W7>W8 was very smooth. The transition between W95 W98 was somewhat rocky since ASIO was being developed. The transition between W98>W-XP  was somewhat rocky since the core now was NT and it was 32bit instead of 16. And the transition W-XP W7 was rocky for some because of 32 bit > 64 bit. But Cakewalk was way way ahead as they had been developing 64 bit since 3 versions and offered both so customers would not suffer.... Because of hardware and driver issues Cakewalk has allways been upfront about what works and what not ...... And has warm relations with most hardware manufacturers.... So I'd say you'll be good. I do espect thunderbolt to be lowlevel integrated. Since Intel owns thunderbolt they do make hardware changes usually without notifying the multimedia community. But they now are working closely with Apple too. And half the multimedia community is on that platform too. So I have a very good feeling about W10.

But the proof is in the pudding so they say....

I have the Win 10 Pre-Release installed on a partition on my backup desktop.  I've installed X3 and my Roland Octa-Capture on there to see if it works.  X3, all that I've tested, works OK.  I'm going to install Platinum to see if it works too, probably sometime next week when I get some time.  But, if X3 works OK, I expect Platinum will work OK too with Win 10.

I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Windows 10 is little more than 8.1 with a start menu and some stuff.
The New Sonar is little more that X3 with some stuff.

I have the win 10 tech preview and haven't found any thing that wont run that does run in 8.1
All the windows COM components seems happy and even ActiveX EXEs run as expected too.
While I haven't run PLAT on 10 I would be floored if it didn't work.

Some friends of mine are testing the Tech Preview as well and they've told me the drivers are the same as 8.1, so I don't foresee any problems, minor ones at most.

As long as they stay away from porting Sonar to run as a "modern" app, I'm sure it would be fine.

Right now it is impossible to get low latency on WinRT (aka "modern"/Metro/toy apps) since they have removed all audio APIs that had any chance if giving you low latency, and only left shared mode WASAPI. Meaning a 160 ms round trip latency at best. I was in the process of porting a real app to a "modern" app and gave up once I realized this.

And people wonder why there are no "modern" quality audio apps in the Windows Store.

The main issues are going to be hardware driver compatibility. Roland for example took months to come out with supported drivers for the VS100 and 700 when Windows 8 came out. It is going to depend quite a bit more on the particular hardware you are using rather than Sonar.

Samplitude Pro X3 Suite (x64), (SONAR Platinum  ), Sonar V-Studio 100, AKAI APC20, Axiom Pro 62, Win10 1703 (x64), i7-2600k 3.4 GHz , 16 GB DDR3, ASUS P8Z68 DELUXE, 250 GB SSD (OS), 3 x 450GB SATA 10K (Projects/Samples), GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, ASUS 24" Monitors

This likely won't be an issue for most. Besides, those using W-RT won't be able to upgrade for free anyway, sorry to say.

Since Cakewalk have very few products that aren't Windows-only, with ongoing Windows compatibility, they don't have a business. I wouldn't worry about it.

As an aside, I'm rather looking forward to Windows 10. I think it looks really good. The same rule applies to Windows as to the Star Trek movies; when you land on a good one, skip the next one, as it's bound to suck.

Windows 10 is great so far.

As Hill62 pointed out, drivers for Hardware will be the issue. Roland (Edirol), for example took aged to release drivers for Windows 8. Forget the fact that it had been available in preview form for a YEAR before public release. It was pathetic.

Even more pathetic is that their Windows 7 drivers COULD have worked fine, but they wrote their drivers to NOT install if the operating system wasn't specifically Windows 7. Most other drivers wont lock you out that way.

I'm hoping these companies wake up this time, download the Preview version of Windows 10 (like every other hardware manufacturer has), and write/test their drivers BEFORE we need them. Not after.

Jeeze. Do I rant much or what?!

I guess with win 10 running one should avoid watching start trek episodes where self destruct sequence orders are given vocally,or shutting down vital, or non vital systems....Just so things don't blow up...and the ship's Sonar guidance system keeps things on course to Eden's bliss...lol

MS has a team focusing on Pro Audio for Windows 10. They have already fixed some old audio and midi related bugs and tightened up midi timing. They are also working on ultra-low latencies with audio but the new code hasn't yet been added to the Windows 10 Consumer Tech Preview. Supposedly within a couple months the code will be added to the latest build. Some MS employees are at NAMM this year talking with Pro Audio manufacturers like UAD and seem happy to work with MS. So good news for Windows 10 and Pro Audio crowd.

Sorry everybody but I'm sticking with Windows 7 and Sonar X3. This is a combo that works well for me with my hardware and many software programs. I don't use Sonar that much so spending the extra money just isn't worth it to me at this time. Upgrading to Windows 10 might turn into a nightmare for me with hardware problems and software incompatibilities. It's just not worth the headaches.
