Yes, they're very good at dangling that carrot - I guess I'll end up upgrading to this regardless of whether I really need it or not.

Cakewalk, why do you have to be so good at selling stuff?  Just browsed over the 'Expanded' literature and already I feel I should have it...  damn your marketing abilities

Chregg,

Z+2 is not a part of Expanded. It is a part of the Production Suite, but that's a bundle of X1 Producer, Expanded, Z+2, and the PC-4K Expander/ gate for $499USD. And we don't forsee Z+2 becoming a part of SONAR anytime in the future, so the value of your purchase is intact.

Being the happy X1 user that I am I'm stoked that the guys and gals at Cakewalk
are committed to expanding it before moving on to X2.

A Channel Tools type module would be another great addition to the Pro Channel,
maybe an Analyzer too...  the future looks damn good!

Good job Cake! =)

The FX chains UI is interesting. Are the assignable controls automatable?

I do notice something that troubles me slightly. The image of the compressor in the new pro channel has lost the switch between the two compressor types. And I note that a "PC4K S-Type Channel Strip Compressor" is listed as "coming soon".

Does this mean that the current ability to use the bus compressor on tracks is being removed? Or is it just another module now?

John T,

AFAIK, yes, the FC Chains 2.0 parameters are automatable, and controllable by ACT.

The switch has been removed because the ProChannel is modular now. IOW, you add modules one at a time and can have multiple instances of the same module i.e. two EQs, two compressors, etc. in a single ProChannel.

It means there's another ProChannel compressor module in the works.

Right, so that'll be different from just using the bus compressor on a track?

Early days I know, but any clue which 3rd party developers are on board, if any?

Though, I think I may already know the answer to this. lol =)

Sorry, I see that the one already in Sonar X1 is "PC4K S-Type bus compressor" whereas the coming soon one is "PC4K S-Type Channel Strip Compressor" - presumably they are different and the original Sonar X1 is still there in the upgrade, just modular?

Mudgel,

All you need is Expanded and the PC-4K Expander/ Gate for $79 as a bundle and you'll have it all.

To answer the new comp question, the one that is on the way is a channel compressor from the same console that the PC-4K bus comp is from. So, ya, its a channel comp from that same large format console.

As for other third-party developers, that's got to stay mum for now. Obviously, Softube is on board and made the new tube sat module for Expanded, but we'll have to reveal other partners as the time comes.

MUSE

It's a basic feature that should have been in it all along (in fact we were told it would be) - no way am I upgrading to Producer and then Expanded, when I do not need all the other things, just for this
Muse,

I understand how you feel in that you want to stay with Studio, but just have an expanded version for Studio. I think its a great idea, but I don't know if its going to happen being that the ProChannel is tied to Producer and that the ProChannel is such a big part of Expanded.

I'm not sure how the other, Studio friendly features of Expanded, would make it into Studio and/ or Essential, but I imagine some of them will eventually. I'm also not sure where we promised that the Browser would be able to have files dropped into it, but I could be wrong.

If that's the only feature of Expanded that you;re interested, maybe its best to wait and see what happens? If you put all the features together, though, its a pretty good deal, IMHO.

SP

I don't care about Pro Channel anyway - don't need it. I just want browsing to work the way it should have from the start - particular an easy way to replace instruments in a track -  it has always been more complicated than in most DAWS to replace instruments in a track anyway, especially with the instrument tracks, this is a basic feature that should have been attended to as part of the regular update cycle not as an addon bundled with stuff I don't need and that I have to pay twice for

I'm liking the potential of this upgrade very much.I'm concerned though that adding extra modules to the Pro-Channel will increase the problem those of us running in a lower resolution are having; i.e. when the ProChannel is docked, it is impossible to see it all while the EQ module is fully expanded, particularly if the Control Bar is shown. Will it now be vertically scrollable to rectify this?

Yep, vertical scrolling is described on the X1 Expanded web page:

"Navigating the new custom ProChannel is simple and intuitive thanks to “in place scrolling” which allows the ProChannel strip to scroll vertically while the console remains in place. ProChannel modules can also be expanded and collapsed individually preserving valuable screen real-estate."
