I find this post quite amusing, especially as someone who is about to enter the world of PC-based recording and mixing for the first time. I won't have Sonar in-hand and in my macine for about another week, yet everything I read about Cakewalk Producer 7 is good. I plan on integrating it with a stand-alone recorder I have been using for the past year (a Boss BR1600CD). I might be new here, but I have been around music for 40-plus years, and have learned that even old dogs like me should be willing to give new things a try. I expect a learning curve and I'm sure I'll be driving y'all nuts with my questions, but I believe Sonar Producer is going to open up a whole new avenue of possibilities. Do I expect to hit some problems? Heck yeah ... but I have a feeling most of those will be operator error, not system errors -- and won't be anything that can't be fixed. This guy seems to be blowing his cookies before even getting it up. Too bad. Sounds like it all boils down to the difference between MAC fans and PC fans. It's like the age-old Ford and Chevy thing. You either like one or the other, and the "other" is religated to being something lesser than the one they favor. Anyway, glad to be aboard. I hope to learn a lot from this site and you guys. Paul

One of the things that was mentioned in Logic 8s review in Sound on Sound was that the problem with the midi tick timing hadnt been sorted with version 8, dont you think they should have looked at that instead of revamping the interface, bundling content with it and hoisting it on the public while it still had problems. ;)

ORIGINAL: keith ORIGINAL: steve austin i know the Mac platform and OS is so elegant and stable and i don't have to make adjustments to the OS to get it working efficiently because it automatically optimises itself when you open Logic Pro Yes, it's magical. Magically delicious. It's like a frosty breakfast cereal. With a toy surprise inside. There is just too many problems and inconsistencies going on with the PC and vista and Sonar for me to even consider hoping on board. and... they leave us in and they are so slow to do anything about it or come forth and admit things and openly discuss it. Who's this "us" business? I thought you wouldn't "even consider hoping on board" SONAR7 on Windows, yet you have some sort of special precognitive insight into the instability of PC-based DAWs and somehow know for a fact that Cakewalk is "slow to do anything about" imaginary problems that you haven't experienced yet? So have you "hoped on board" yet, or not? Geez... gimme some of whatever it is you're smoking. I wanna live in your reality... just to see what it's like. BTW, I counted no fewer than 7 references to Logic Pro8 in your post. Looks like your mind is made up. See you in 4 years when Apple decides to do something radical like focus on iGadgets and totally neglect apps like Logic for years on end, or maybe just switch to some entirely different hardware platform causing them to rewrite everything from scratch... quote: ORIGINAL: steve austin i know the Mac platform and OS is so elegant and stable and i don't have to make adjustments to the OS to get it working efficiently because it automatically optimises itself when you open Logic Pro Yes, it's magical. You must be trolling for laughs yes? You read the forum and decide how good Sonar is by inspection? Sounds like you don't know squat about PCs either. Then you claim Logic is 99% stable? You measured this with what? Actually wrestlers make just about enough money to afford both Sonar and Logic. I wrestled my way up to a desktop and a labtop before I quit. Wow, 99% glitch free, 1% below Sonar.

In Steve's defense,,,, I have been a die hard windows and sonar user for many years now, that being said Steve is not entirely wrong. I have been on a Vista machine for almost a year now and for every one thing that I like about it, there are ten things to complain about. Then there is Sonar. I am sure most of my problems are user error, or lack of knowledge but Damm it if I have not tried and tried to get information on several really show stopping issues. First off I spent the big bucks and got a Motu Ultralite,,, can you say frustrating,,,, Between Sonar and the Motu randomly changing my output settings, or Sonar not displaying some of my options.... or having to completely reboot the machine to change my sampling rate... and no way (that I have found) for Sonar to change sampling rates from 48 - 44. Don’t even get me started about drivers, one plugin works with one type, one piece of hardware works with another, etc. Then there is ACT. I see these guys do these nice demonstrations where you just hook up your new keyboard and click the ACT button and everything works,,,, yeah right. I upgraded my $3,500 ensonique for a new M-Audio axiom so that I could do something simple like kick start my songs or my sequencing from the keyboard.... I am ready to pull out my freaken hair trying to figure out how to get this crap to work.... and all I see is endless forums on how this stuff doesn't really work. I have posted several times and not a single response. I am not saying Steve's pipe dream of no problems would exist with Logic and a mac... but it would be nice to have a solid operating system, it would be nice if the high end hardware I purchased works with my daw the way that it should, and it would be nice if I could take advantage of the great features and actually make music rather than spend most of my time fighting with the stupid hardware and software. And it would be nice if there was better support from Cakewalk, either in the way of return responses in the forum’s or better documentation. Some days I don’t even open up Sonar because I am scared that I will end up spending the entire day fighting with crap when really all I want to do is make music. Imagine if you were a painter and every time you felt inspired to paint you would have to fear that your canvas might melt or that your brush might disintegrate or your yellow paint might come out red. This how I feel every time I upgrade, buy new hardware or even open up Sonar. I often contemplate starting over with a mac, I would even be content with half the problems that I face now. As it is,,, Sonar is the only app that I use that is not avialable on a Mac now. Just an opinion! ~ C

ORIGINAL: Christian3D In Steve's defense,,,, Steve's either getting paid for his comments, or he's trolling. Either way, he doesn't need to be defended. Everything that is wrong with Vista as a DAW platform, and any serious issues with SONAR itself can be found in a variety of threads on this forum. Steve's posts are nothing more than a shameless plug for Logic on a Mac. Nothing wrong with saying you prefer one app or platform over another -- just don't make it soooo obvious that you're entirely biased, as Steve does. I have been a die hard windows and sonar user for many years now, that being said Steve is not entirely wrong. I have been on a Vista machine for almost a year now and for every one thing that I like about it, there are ten things to complain about. Everyone knows that Vista is not the state of the art for DAWs these days. At least everyone that frequents this forum. That may change, or maybe it won't. In any case, XP is the only way to go today for stability and driver support (unless you're lucky to have your particular hardware vendors on the leading edge of Vista support). Some may argue against my assertion, but I know at least as many other will agree. Steve isn't telling anybody they don't already know in that regard. There are many people on this forum that can help... almost everyone on this forum uses some version of SONAR, and many use Motu hardware including the Ultralite. It shouldn't be too difficult to engage those Motu users with your particular problems. I searched for posts by you to see if your requests for help went ignored... I found two threads started by you regarding your Motu troubles: http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.asp?m=936905&mpage=1&key= http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.asp?m=958375&mpage=1&key= In both cases, questions on hardware/software setup were asked directly of you, and you didn't respond -- you started a threads to discuss your problems, but you didn't actually engage anyone in the discussion!!! Other than that I saw two ACT related threads that appear to have no responses. If you want to solve your problems with the Motu, then you can't just throw your problem out there and hope that somebody posts the right answer. ... Either go back to one of those old threads and provide the requested info, or start a new thread asking for "Help with Motu Ultralite", etc. And keep bumping it until somebody responds. I'd be very surprised if some Motu users out there can't walk you through a solution, or at least confirm the problems you're seeing.

Hi Christian- SPE 7.0.1, XP Pro SP2, MOTU Ultralite, BCR2000 here, and everything's working fine, ACT included. I know there are some Vista-specific drivers/settings, but IIRC it was Jim Roseberry who suggested using WDM drivers for Vista with the Ultralite for now. EDIT: Or maybe he said MOTU was one of the few who do have good ASIO drivers for Vista at this point. I can't remember now, sorry, but you can search his posts if he doesn't respond here. -Susan

A drummer walks into a music store, sees a Marshall Plexi, a 1968 Fender Strat, a Vox wah and a Univibe; he hooks it all up and then proceeds to wonder why he can't play Machine Gun just like Hendrix... He swears he could do it on his playstation playing Guitar Hero... Everybody knows that Fender issued a few bad strats during the CBS years. Damn Fender! FWIW, I had ONE bad session using Sonar throughout the last year - one that's "unexplainable"... The rest of the issues I've encountered could most likely be linked to a few particular VSTi's.

Exactly Rain. Sonar is a rock plugins and vst's cause problems sometimes in any machine. Whenever I have a problem, it is because of a plugin, and only ones that did not come with sonar. And even then, I hardly ever have a problem. I must say current setup is the most stable computer I have ever had. It's shocking... the midi timing stuff isn't fixed, track view to track inspector views can become unlinked, and then there's that &%$*#-ing Core Audio Overload issue that's particularly annoying. There are others, but those particularly get on my nerves... it's been almost 3 years for them. In my opinion, ALL they did was revamp the UI, with a smattering of new features, and little else. Unfortunately, many will view a new UI as a major application overhaul, and think the app's somehow all new. Logic Pro 8 IS Logic Pro 7 in almost every way. Take care, - zevo

I just couldn't resist throwing in an anecdote. Back in the days of the Mac Plus and Master Tracks Pro, MTP used 240 pulse per quarter note timing, and another program (DP maybe?) used 480 pulses per quarter note. There was this one composer who would call up the tech support people at Passport Designs and constantly hassle them with how MTP was "sufficiently professional for my needs due to its inaccurate timing" and wondering when they were going to fix this problem. Eventually he went over to DP, and told the guys at Passport how lame they were, how much better the timing on Performer was, etc. Only one problem: Back in those days, we're talking about CPUs that thought 25KHz was blazing fast. A friend of mine measured the jitter on a Mac Plus with respect to timing, and found a linear relationship between jitter and pulses per quarter note. Bottom line: because DP made the processor work harder, there was a twice as much jitter at 480 PPQ as there was at 240 PPQ, so bottom line was that due to computer limitations, BOTH PROGRAMS HAD EXACTLY THE SAME AMOUNT OF TIMING INACCURACY even though they used different PPQs. But I'm sure the guy who felt MTP wasn't good enough for his "perfect" sense of timing never figured that out...it's sad how people have to boost their own sense of self-worth by ragging on things to show their supposed superiority. As to Logic Studio, more power to 'em. Apple didn't ditch the product, they dropped the price, and there's no dongle. Sonar is now officially supported running under Boot Camp. It's all good.

Some days I don’t even open up Sonar because I am scared that I will end up spending the entire day fighting with crap when really all I want to do is make music. Hi Christian, Some simple advice that'll take you a long way: If you want a trouble-free experience, use a setup that's known to be trouble-free. Vista is problematic right now. Unless you work within a very limited scope of parameters, you will have problems. This is well known... Why continue to bang your head against the wall? WinXP is rock-solid... It's hear... it works great right now... If you build/maintain your own system, model it after a trouble-free DAW. If you don't have this knowledge/experience, there are folks that can help you get it done. As Susan G mentioned, the Ultralite is actually a very good performer. (It's actually one of the better performers under Vista.) Take a logical step back... and address the underlying problem/s. You'll then find that Sonar (and any other DAW) will work as expected.
