Aleksey has been releasing his plugins in 64bit options for several months. My new year resolution this year is not to buy any more effects or instruments unless they're native 64 bit. Looks like I'll be spending most of my studio upgrade budget with Voxengo

I know that this is about the "64-bit campaign"...geared towards informing and encouraging plug-in manufacturers to offer 64-bit versions of their products BUT... Shouldn't we also be writing the hardware manufacturers of various audio-interface devices to offer better or even less buggy 64-bit drivers for 64-bit OS (like Ultimate Vista 64, Windows 7 etc.)? Given that we do accomplish and become successful eventually in the campaign towards the move to 64-bit of plug-in manufacturers, wouldn't all these be somewhat a bit useless if we don't campaign for 64-bit hardware drivers for common or popular audio-interface device manufacturers as well (whether its USB, Firewire, PCI-based)? What I'm trying to say is, let's be more "comprehensive" about this 64-bit campaign...let it be not just a campaign for 64-bit plug-ins...and/or a better 64-bit Sonar future releases... let it also be a campaign for better 64-bit drivers of audio-interface device manufacturers...to assure us of a truly, dedicated, honest-to-goodness, 64-BIT DAW PC system (both hardware and software/driver-wise). Just a suggestion though
Pentium D 925 3GHz dual-core , MSI P31 Neo v2, 4GB DDR2 800, ATI X1650 Pro 512mb, Audiophile 2496, Seagate SATA HDDs (80, 80, 320, 500), Antec 430w PSU, Behringer UMX61, Casio Privia PX-320, Emu Xmidi 2x2, Pearl Drum set (acoustic), Carlsbro mixer

PathosLogos, Well most (if not all) current audio interface manufacturers already have 64 bit drivers available for their products (unless you're talking about an older product). One of the last ones to make the move was M-Audio and they also have them (though in beta - yuk ). So what we're really missing right now are 64 bit software which are VERY rare. So my question is, who are you specifically talking about when you say hardware vendors need to develop 64 bit drivers?

Comin gto the party a little late here guys, but I finally got a dual core box that is capable of running XP 64 bit comfortably and boy is it fast! I have ye4t to install any music software or in fact a decent sound card, so I thought this would be a good plaxce to air my ignorance. As far as I can make out, if I imnstall the 32 bit version of the Sonar 6 Producer that I own on thuis XP64 bit machine, it will still run basically in 32 bit mode but at least all my plugins should work. Is this right, or do I have to downgrade my machine to XP32 in order to run everything? Just to make things esxtra nice, my main plugs are Toontracks EZD, and NI`s B4 & Battery3! As far as I can see they are all not currently 64 bit compliant. SO - am I right or am I wrong? HELP! Ivan

Hey Ivan, You're right. I run both the 32 and 64 bit versions of Sonar under Vista64 just fine. Sonar 32 bit runs better than Sonar 64 bit though (at least in my experience/testings). So you're good to go :-) HTH

ORIGINAL: ericlemmons Can I get some advice on how to go 64bit? I'm thinking about going with an AMD Phenom processor with 8Gig of RAM. Shouldn't the RAM make a giant difference with 64bit? Should I go Vista or XP 64bit? What soundcards/modules are supported with 64bit drivers? Which are recommended? Any advice would be much appreiciated. Thanks, all. Eric 1. Intel! 2. DDR3 at least 8GB RAM, and the answer is: YES! Especially in a 64bit system! 3. VISTA 64bit or WINDOWS 7 "if you feel lucky punk" (Dirty Harry, LOL), don't consider anything else. What ever you do, don't use XP! 4. E-mu 1616M works and sounds great, but there many other brands too on the market you can choose from. Make sure you add some bucks and buy yourself a quality sound card. Its much better in the long run when you start using your new computer. =) Good luck my friend Regards Freddie

Well as usual contradictory advice but I am somejhow not leaning in your direction here, Freddie, as too many other poeople hacve told me the oppposite - XP64 is the way to go, which is good because that is what I actually HAVE and MS are not getting any more of my money just yet with the flakeometer on Vista apps still running very very high as far as I can see onver here in the UK. YMMV but I am a conservative at heart - hence running Sonar6 when 8 is out! (grin) Off to play with Sonar32......

Sony Vegas Pro 8.1 for Vista x64 includes 64-bit DX plugins. I don't think I have a complete list, but all of the usual suspects you might know from Sound Forge - Track EQ, Reverb, Chorus, Delay, Noise Gate, and Flange/Wah/Phase. 5.1 DirectX® effects for the master bus include EQ, Dither, and Wave Hammer Surround compression tools, all showing as 64-bit when opened in SONAR. Add these to the list. I guess you can only get them by buying Vegas. I've never been thrilled with them before, but they sound great in a few experiments with 64-bit. BTW, the Vegas 8.1 for Vista x64 is slammin' if you need to edit video.

BTW, the Vegas 8.1 for Vista x64 is slammin' if you need to edit video. So long as you haven't bought any third party DX plugins. There is no Bitbridge style application in Vegas 8.1. But on its own it's really fast!. Simple edits render in fractions of the time that they used to in 32bit, for sure.

INFO! Simplified version how 64bit works! 1. CPU and Memory are in native 64bit! 2. The CPU = the engine in the computer, like the engine in your car. The car you drive to your work everyday, right. 3. When the computer is reading 32bit code its “0†and “1†its in 32bit stream long code. 4. The 64bit stream code is twice as long “0†and “1†as the 32bit stream code. 5. The CPU and the memory are build to read it in 64bit long code not 32bit code. 6. So instead of re-buffer the 32bit code twize as fast compared to 64bit code, it needs only read it in normal 64bit as it was build and meant to do! 7. When the computer reads it in 64bit string long code, that makes it work more efficient. You, as a user of the computer experience this as CPU boost! 8. So comparing it to your cars engine is like: 32bit mode = the engine goes maximum on the 3 gear only! But in 64bit mode = the cars engine has 6 gears, gear box instead of just 3. 9. So the conclusion is and note, that the car drives faster, more speed, and more efficient on the gear 6, then on gear 3. The Maximum spin of the engine is the same on both gears but the speed is not the same! So if you don't believe take a spin in you car and get some tickets then! =) This is very simplified version Why & How and about 64bit! Its the same with 64bit audio file! Even though the audio file is twice as big as the 32bit audio file, its reads the 64bit file more easily in a 64bit OS vs in old 32bit OS! Its better and its the future! I hoped U got it and that it all help! Regards Freddie
