Re the Strum Acoustic thingie: Is it a VST plug-in, and can one export its MIDI to the timeline so as to use the MIDI to trigger other sound modules...guitar samples or whatever? I'll almost certainly buy X3 at some point, but I'll wait until I hear some feedback from others on this forum. In general, I don't like the uncertainty engendered by the ownership transition, but I have to believe Gibson is not buying Cakewalk simply to trash it. They're looking to fill some holes in their product lineup and better position themselves competitively. Nothing wrong with that per se. It shows they value Sonar and intend to develop it further.

Question: I already own Melodyne editor which is a step or two up over essential. I use the plugin quite a bit. Will the integrated essential function smoother than the editor plug? What are the pro's and cons of each? Currently in order to use the Editor plug, I have to save & close my session, then increase my buffer size to at least 1024 in my Profire control panel, (Melodyne prompts me everytime I launch the plug with a current buffer size of less than 1024) then re-launch Sonar, re-load my session, insert the plug on the track, then proceed with pitching vocals. After pitching, I usually just bounce the pitched track and delete the original & the plug. (Otherwise, Melodyne tends to cause me problems when i get into comping and mixing.) Then I have to close the session, & bring my buffer down to a usable level for more tracking. (ie much lower latency) It's a bit of a headache, but Melodyne is awesome for turning a good vocal take into an amazing vocal take. I'm hoping the integrated essential version reduces my Celemony headache a bit without costing me all the fancy bells and whistles that come with the editor version. Seth?

It is a VSTi plug-in. Here is a link to the lite version. It is not clear whether the full version or the lite version is part of X3 but I would guess this is it.

I predicted October 3. Who do I need to talk to to delay the release date? In all seriousness, I'm really excited to see Melodyne integration, VST3, improved comp'ing, and even some of those new plugins will be handy.

Hmm, interesting with all the new features like Melodyne, VST3, and improved video support. Other than those three, I don't see anything else that interests me at all, I already have the full ASS Lounge Lizard - which is awesome by the way :-) This time around, I'll be grabbing the upgrade if there is a time limited special offer, and shelving it while I save the rest of my pennies for another DAW, and time to learn it ASAP. It's time for me to acquire and learn at least one, if not two new DAWs ... after all, they are just more tools in your toolbox. If X3 is another case of 'look at the cool new things we've added including limited versions of another Drum VSTi, and AAS Modelled instruments" - (which you typically want to upgrade to the full version anyway) - instead of fixing long standing bugs, then I'll be targeting serious resource at learning and using another DAW for any future projects. I don't expect any DAW to be free of issues, but Sonar has some issues which never get attention, and as much as I like the great things about it ... if the company won't fix serious bugs, there's simply no choice left other than to try out another tool for the job. That's where it's got to for me. I need to try another tool, because they won't fix this one !. Don't get me wrong ... I love most of what Sonar is, and I'm not thrilled at the idea of having to go to something else, mostly because of the time and effort required. But at the same time, it's the only wise thing to do. The Gibson/Tascam acquisition has also had a bearing on making me decide tp prioritise getting another DAW sorted out. I don't know if it's going to turn out good or bad for Cakewalk, but I'll be making sure I'm not a casualty if it doesn't go well. Hmm, none of this makes me happy at all :-( Cheers - Cliff

Does anyone know if there's a list of plug-ins that come in VST3 versions anywhere? I tried KVR as the most obvious place to look but they don't seem to have such a list.

So, here's a question. I just realized that it clearly includes Melodyne Essential, but I don't actually see ARA mentioned anywhere. Granted, this is just a Sweetwater ad, not an exhaustive list of changes/improvements, but is it possible that it only includes the plugin, and NOT the ARA integration? Because, that would deflate me faster than a punctured blowup doll (not that I would know anything about that).

X3 has very deep ARA integration with Melodyne (or any other future plugins that support the ARA protocol). Both ARA and VVocal fall under the region FX umbrella and are equally supported. So VVocal will work exactly as before (in fact in some ways it works better). As long as its installed from a prior version of SONAR old projects containing it will load fine. Take lanes have gone through a massive update and the implementation is light years ahead of anything in prior versions. There are new tools, and commands. If you do a lot of audio comping, this new comp tool will be very useful. Don't go by the sparse info in what you saw. There are tons of deeper features in X3. There will be marketing videos and articles that go into much greater depth with the features soon.

From the sweetwater list and the baker's posts it looks like X3 takes on some of the long held complaints about SONAR from users here at the forum. I imagine the official release will be up soon, and then Noel et al will have to answer these questions all over again. Don't know about take lanes/layers, but it sounds like Cake is doing something w/ it. Still no notation upgrades. And I like the new toys that come w/ it. Strum sounds fun, as does melodyne. But too bad I already have Nomad blue tubes - can I get a refund? Actually, if the time-based effects are in that bundle it will add a bunch of good analogish sounding echo fx which SONAR has been a little light w/. Good stuff in the Blue Tubes. If anyone is listening, has the engine been tweaked? Almost gapless, but still could be just a little bit. And when is the matrix getting updated. Otherwise, looks like a solid upgrade. Of course, not everyone will be happy, but hey, I had a date like that more than once. @

I feel the need to point out that there will be a LOT more details coming soon. Some of the items on Sweetwaters' list are very vague but are major updates (For example: Comp multiple takes together instantly for the ultimate performance). In fact pretty much every item on that list deserves and will have much discussion. I don't think we can hide that the real announcement is just around the corner. There will be a lot to talk about.

The link is disabled now, but IIRC, the fine print said (paraphrasing): "Cakewalk will be shipping SONAR X3 on September 28th. We will start shipping it out in the first week of October." So, if that is so, then YOU win!

nah .. sonar is apparently a guitar players DAW according to a comment a read the past few days. must have dreamt project 5 / zeta and rapture then.. the core program are only what I'm interested in improvement wise not the fluffy dice or go faster stripes (a few of the extra's I already got LE versions free with other things e.g. AAS things) ... and in like past years it's nice to read's Noels document regarding it.. not the marketing stuff.

When X2 was released weren't there pre-sale discounted deals for those who ordered before it was released? And weren't there different prices for download only or for boxed versions? Just asking because the Sweatwater looks like a boxed version and if it is shipping so soon, does this mean no advance pre-sale orders? I will probably buy it, just not sure if it will be soon or later at Christmas holidays.

I'm happy to see the ARA integration of Melodyne. I have Melodyne Editor so I am assuming that my upgraded product would be available to me as it is in a competing DAW product. I'm hoping that Audio Snap 2 works as well as Audio Bend works. Looking to see if the Console view has been improved and is more efficient in it's use of space with Sends and Insert Plugins.
In the last year I have upgraded my plugin collection to include some of the top of the line products so more integrated plugs isn't going to move me unless they are also open to use in my other three DAW programs.
I'm going to be monitoring the early users posts and asking for a lot of opinions from the users of these features. I might wait till the demo has rolled out before I make a purchase.

Literally yes. SONAR will even open .wrk files from the original version of Cakewalk v.1. I did that experiment a few years ago and was able to open the two part invention wrk file. If we went back any further in time you would have regression :)
