Like Karyn said, the license follows the dongle. So, as long as you've got the dongle with you, you're good to go.

I've not looked into putting the same license on 2 different dongles, but I'm guessing it won't work.

You'll not be able to put the same license on two dongles.   But even the Sonar license doesn't allow you to use Sonar in two places at once....  they trust you to keep it single user, even if you loaded many machines.

With Cubase, how does licensing work? I've heard about an e-Licenser, do I need that for Cubase? Presumably it's a USB dongle type solution? Is it a proprietary thing or can I use any USB stick? If not, can I at least use iLok? I have my Waves/IK/Overloud on a USB stick and I really don't want to use multiple ports on my laptop just for dongles.

Cubase Elements uses a software based elicenser and Cubase Artist and Pro utilize a USB elicenser which is different than an ilok.  I travel extensively and use a simple non powered hub that I got at Best Buy for $7 and run my audio interface, wireless mouse, elicenser, and ilok without any issue on multiple computers.

All the best,

Greg

And we can see here that the "elicenser" is mentioned and $7 for the usb hub but not that elicenserit is not free its like what? $35 and uses a usb JUST for Steinberg products only. my point... deceptive answer!

For Artist and above, yes, you do. Elements uses their software eLicenser.

Cubase is a fine program. I am well versed in it, and have used it much in the past. They even use my Quadrafuzz processor in there, and they were very kind to make sure it had my blessing before they released it.

I think the point that is being missed here is that every DAW has a different personality, different set of strengths, and aims for a different target audience. It is not the job of the software to align with your needs, it is your job to find out which software aligns best with your needs. There are some people for example who would use Cubase and couldn't stand the thought of using Reason. But there are others who would use Reason and find Cubase cumbersome.

You really owe it to yourselves to download demos and play with these programs for a while, rather than obsess about crossgrade prices, how it's licensed, etc. Find out which program has good "chemistry" with you, learn it, and make great music. Although these programs have many similarities, it is the differences that will cause people to choose one over the other. No single program does it all or is bug-free...YOU have to choose the one that comes closest to your needs.

Excuse me! but this STILL is the Cakewalk forum! NOT the other software area!

Just posted on KVR:

"Actually the price for the competitive price was €359 until today. In order to make it available as soon as possible we just reduced the price to €289. After the Welcome Offer Promo the price will go back to €359."

So, 290$ in the US probably.

24 hours ago when I was looking for alternative DAW Sweetwater's price for Cubase Pro Competitive Crossgrade was already dropped from $449.99 to $325.00.

And this: "This is a specially priced version of Cubase Pro 9.5 for registered owners of one of the following: Ableton Live Standard/Suite, Apple Logic, Avid Pro Tools/Pro Tools HD, Cakewalk Sonar Platinum/Professional, Image-Line FL Studio Signature/Producer, MOTU Digital Performer, PreSonus Studio One Professional, or Propellerhead Reason 6+." More here. (it's exactly the same ad that I saw 24 hours ago)

Yep same as I saw 24hrs ago too. The OP did say starting on 23rd though. We will wait and see. You know it's the end of Cakewalk when a sales guy from Steinberg posts an offer in this forum without getting banned :/ Sad.

yeah, I just wish the guy from Steinburg was telling us how they were going to takeover sonar!!!......I have no money to buy a whole new setup.....I just spent so much money on sonar, and I only just started getting somewhere....really bad timing....a year ago I really should have bought a mac with garage band, but instead I invested in sonar........Yes steinburg, if you really want our business your going to need to make better offers than that..........I had a go of studio one, melodyne and addictive drums, wouldn't even work......I spent $100 of dollars on all that stuff....boo Gibson!!!

Windows 10, 64 bit, intel core i7-6500U CPU @ 2.50GHZ  2.59GHZ......12 gig ram ....Sonar lifetime updates, presonus audiobox 1818 interface, and beringer UFX1604 mixer interface/control surface...... All round musician, multi-instrumentalist/songwriter.....attempting to produce good music.....started on music creator 6 2014, bought sonar 2015....and now invested in lifetime updates......Learning always!!!!Thanx cakewalk and online forum

I'm not thanking Cubase for anything!
And this makes my point of another post earlier today! RUDE Vultures!
Posting an ad here is WRONG, in bad tasted and IS against forum rules!!!
Yet pinned here by a host!

There is NO debate here! This is an AD! and at a time when heads are spinning on what to do next? Where should we spend our cash? Cubase is trying to take advantage of a state of confusion and spontaneous buying!

Do you really want to put your recording future with a company that would do this?

The "ad" is making Sonar users aware of a special offer.

This is the WRONG area for a "AD"! This is STILL the SONAR area! move this to the OTHER software area!

Can we get clarification on the pricing?  I'm hearing $290 and $325.  The price I see on Sweetwater is $325, a great price, but if I can get it for less, that's even better.

And if you wish, you can probably keep using SONAR. The only places I suspect will be reluctant to keep using "abandoned" software will be production studios... be even then some will keep using what works and what they know how to work.

I'm sticking with SONAR. I have used an older Cubase and didn't like it much. Just a personal preference, but it's my preference.

First of all, I think any personal attacks on Greg or any other contributor are uncalled for. Now that there’s no Cakewalk to compete with, I think his outreach to Sonar users in their natural habitat on a holiday is commendable.

Second, while I personally much prefer StudioOne, I do own Cubase 9, and I think it’s more Sonar-like than S1 is. Cakewalk users seem to have a higher tolerance for complexity and the need to configure. In return, Cubase can offer a lot of advanced functionality, in addition to a great library of sounds, instruments, and effects. Greg is a great presenter and product expert, and no harm can come from hearing him out.

Lastly, the dread people have of losing their ability to activate Sonar makes a good case for dongles. If the lights go out at Steinberg, people can continue using their software or even install the software onto a new computer.

The offer is great but there's no way I'm getting a DAW that requires e-licenser. And no, I pay for my software and dont support piracy at all, it has nothing to do with that.

How does licensing work for other DAW's out there. I'm mainly looking in the direction of Studio One at the moment. The one time license of FL Studio looks promising but I've never really enjoyed working with the trial versions I've tested.

Licensing schemes vary some, but the two you mention (and most others) simply require logging in with a username and password when authorizing, and they both offer offline options, too.

I'm just too over this.
I invested everything I had in splat last December 31. If I had wanted cubase, or anything else, that's what I would've bought.
Promised lifetime...
on a sinking ship...
that had no lifeboats!

I'm not ready to even look at another daw, yet.
Its like I'm at my girlfriend 's funeral, and some other chick is flirting with me, trying to catch me on the rebound...for a price.
Poor taste...
Its like the ambulance-chasing lawyers.
And not only that, cubase is giving a time limit to decide.
They're NOT concerned about you...
They're concerned with how much success they can get from Gibson's failure.

Look at it this way;
Many Sonar users had different versions and paid accordingly.
Will cubase offer a discount in accordance with the version Sonar users were paying for?

Moreover, the person who stickied this thread demands that discussion be kept to cubase banter, only.
So speaking about our dearly departed (sonar)...is somehow off limits???

Just my two synths.

No one is trying to take business away from Cakewalk.  Cakewalk have stopped trading.

This thread is for discussing the offer made by Steinberg to Sonar users.

PreSonus are announcing a special offer for Sonar users on Tuesday, there will be a similar thread.
