message from Greg Ondo of Steinberg
My name is Greg Ondo and I have represented Steinberg products for over 25 years in the United States. We were shocked to hear of Gibson's decision to cease development of the Cakewalk brand and products. We know that there are many currently available alternatives to compose and create music on your Windows computer. Steinberg has a long history of innovation spanning more than 33 years including the VST and ASIO standards. Steinberg offers a broad portfolio of music and audio software solutions including Cubase, Nuendo, WaveLab, Dorico, HALion and Groove Agent. We wanted to invite you to attend an interactive google hangout where you can ask specific questions on how to translate your workflows in a Cubase environment. You can send questions on what a feature is called in Cubase, where to locate and execute a function or how to do a specific type of edit. There may be features not available currently in Cubase and there will probably many that are similar but have different names There are promotions on crossgrades available to transition into Cubase with discounts starting November 24th. If you are interested in a streamlined project migration process let us know if that would be of use to you Steinberg and our parent company Yamaha Corporation are focussed and dedicated to providing solutions for musicians and audio professionals at every level. If you are interested in attending the google hangout you can watch it live or offline and find info about it at at 12 PM US Eastern time November 28th. You can also submit questions in advance to . We will go through the submitted questions and do multiple hangouts or create a series if necessary. All the best, Greg Host Edit :---------------------------- In the interest of fairness, I've been talking to Rick Naqvi, VP of sales at PreSonus. They will be announcing a special offer for Sonar users on Tuesday. Karyn

Hi, Main question I have now is when a Cubase 9.5 demo will be available and if it will be in time to still coincide with any special crossgrade offers.
I have to say I would much prefer to stick with my current working version of Sonar as long as possible, but until I have more solid official information about the continuation of authorization I have to explore all other options. Also there is the looming possibility that some Windows update could break an essential (for me) feature at any time.

I have stickied this post as I believe it is useful to the community and as Cakewalk is no longer trading it can not be detrimental to Cakewalk in any way. Please keep any replies very on topic....

I am very interested in moving on to Cubase. I had Cubase SX 1,2 and 3. after Emagic was bought by Apple. I still have my dongle. I have loved Sonar but I see no reason to continue with it. The offer of a grossgrade to Cubase 9.5 is very thoughtful of the Steinberg team. I thank you for doing this at this time. I hope we are given some time to gather our thoughts on this and that this offer it in effect for awhile.

Greg - FYI, remember Cakewalk users are not accustomed to the eLicenser requirement. If the crossgrade is "digital" be sure to remind that the eLicenser is also required for purchase if it's not going to be "included".

With Cubase, how does licensing work? I've heard about an e-Licenser, do I need that for Cubase? Presumably it's a USB dongle type solution? Is it a proprietary thing or can I use any USB stick? If not, can I at least use iLok? I have my Waves/IK/Overloud on a USB stick and I really don't want to use multiple ports on my laptop just for dongles.

I am interested but unfortunately many of us are reeling from paying memberships to Cakewalk. Is there not anything better you can do than a typical crossgrade transistional offer ? There is many customers to be had here. If you choose to stand above the rest you will benefit that much more. I believe Studio one is offering Cakewalk users a special cross grade offer because of the circumstances. im not trying to set a bidding war here but it seems what is being offered by cubase is a standard crossgrade offer that is given to users of all DAWs around black Friday every year. Thank you.

Hi Greg! I own Steinberg Cubase 9 Elements and Steinberg HALion 6. I will be upgrading to Cubase 9.5 Elements (or above like the Artist version). Steinberg Cubase is a great DAW for sure. Thank you very much for your support Greg. SONAR is a good DAW but sadly it may be over soon. One thing that I would absolutely LOVE though would be for Steinberg to acquire the softsynth Rapture Pro from Cakewalk. Rapture Pro was released in 2015 and is one of my favorite soft synths, it is VSTi, AU and AAX compatible. Rapture Pro is a great workstation plugin and I say that as someone who owns Steinberg HALion 6 as stated above (also great). I would like for Steinberg to save Rapture Pro if possible. A DAW can be replaced and while migrating projects can be a pain, it can always be done via MIDI files at the end of the day, especially if most of your projects are MIDI based like mine are.

Just funny. I sent Steinberg an email that I need a trial version because of the situation with Cakewalk. I got an short answer from the service that the trial version cames the next days - and just 6 hours after that Steinberg opens that thread. This is very nice.

Yeah while I know Cubase is fine software, the combination of having to have a hardware dongle and the lack of ARA support is enough to probably push me to Studio One.

The hardware dongle has worked perfectly for me since I moved to Cubase several years ago. It's an amazing program. I love it. It's easy to use but deep at the same time - and can do pretty much anything you can imagine with an incredible suite of plugins and VSTis. It's been very stable on my rig.

Yes, my thoughts exactly. Also having to pay to renew the license every time there's an update - not that you have to update each time, but from my past experience, you don't get free updates within a year or anything. I am torn about which way to go.

I was reading the Cubase forums last night and the only thing that concerns me and I'm sure going to piss off a lot of cakewalk customers is that Cubase will not work with 32 bit VST plugins hence their own page about it: 32-bit plug-ins can't be re-enabled, since those are not supported by Cubase 9.

Well - at least we can use Rapture, Dimension Pro and Z3TA 1 and 2 without problems in other DAW's for the time being. It's too bad I already switched to Cubase Pro since April this year, so the offer does not apply to me. At the other hand, I could upgrade from LE to Artist to Pro in 3 steps - And every step was a low action price. Nice. Anyway - I never found the USB eLicener inconvenient, and it never gave me any problem. I also stored other licenses on that key. Oh, and Cubase Pro is bundled with some nice synth's too. Retrolouge is already mentioned, but I also love Padshop Pro, Groove Agent and Halion Sonic SE. I think people that work a lot with MIDI will find Cubase a nice DAW to work with. The ease of using and editing MIDI in Cubase was the main reason to switch for me (that - and the Control Room).
