Thanks - I am still going with Cubase!  And thanks to Cakewalk for working it our where the authorizations can continue in the future (though the program may not work with later versions of windows - but what else can they do!)

This ARA issues - does this mean that in Cubase, there is more latency using plugins?

No. It means that you can't use tools like Melodyne right in the track view. You would have to use it as a plugin insert instead.

Ok - done that. For anyone considering this course, what happens is you fill the order form, you're then asked for proof. I sent a screenshot of the page with the Platinum registration. Then it says (something like ...) "your request for eligibility is to be reviewed, you will be contacted within two days ...".  No money has changed hands at this point.
So - now I wait.

Thanks JDF.  I was puzzled as to (a) what to provide and (b) how to provide it.  I baulked because I didn't want to pay money over first.  BTW, doesn't it seem from posts above that a cheaper offer will be made available 'next week'?

I'm sure Sonar will work for a long time yet. Some people are still using Sonar 8.5 on Win 10! So it could be many years.

Splat, Win 10 64bit and all sorts of musical odds and sods collected over the years, but still missing a lot of my old analogue stuff I sold off years ago.

Greg Ondo You can also submit questions in advance to .  We will go through the submitted questions and do multiple hangouts or create a series if necessary.

I tried to list a bunch of questions that are kinda important to my workflow as a SONAR user. They are NOT ordered by priority. And I'd say many of them are kinda crucial though seemingly unimportant.
  1. What algorithms are used for offline pitch-shifting/time-stretching?
  2. What algorithms are used for offline resampling?
  3. What algorithms are used for dithering?
  4. Do you support 64-bit files?
  5. Are project sample rate and device output independent (with real-time resampling) or tightly linked?
  6. Can I enforce plugin oversampling per-instance?
  7. Can I do per-track/per-group rendering with one export?
  8. What formats are available for export? FLAC support? Which MP3 encoder is used - configurable?
  9. What kind of console emulation comes with Cubase Pro?
  10. ARA integration is missing, right?
  11. Can I send/output tracks to tracks and other advanced routing? (think Sonar Aux tracks/Reaper)
  12. Do you have MIDI sends?
  13. Real-time MIDI Output recording works, right?
  14. Enable track recording and monitoring during playback is possible, right?
  15. FX drag-and-drop to copy/move FX across tracks?
  16. Quick groups to control the same parameter on multiple tracks?
  17. Advanced plug-in management with plug-in renaming, auto-preference for VST3 x64 if several are detected?
  18. Does Cubase have Exclusive Solo mode? (i.e. only the selected track is soloed)
  19. Does Cubase have configurable Dim Solo Mode (i.e. reduce volume on the non-soloed track by N dB instead of mute)?
  20. Can I choose how many outputs from a VST are added to the Console view?
  21. What kind of track metering options are available?
  22. Full-screen mode?

Hi All, I'm saddened been here since ProAudio 4.5 but life go's on.
Can someone please tell me if I can run a Cubase demo without having a dongle e licenser
Thanks

Maybe the "Cubase forum" is the place to ask!

The Cubase Elements trial will work with a soft elicenser.

Question for Creg
... Does Cubase have a feature similar to the Studio One arranger track?
I love the way you can section off the different parts of your song and drag them to create different Arrangements

Yes, we have had our arranger track since around 2004 for non linear arrangements.

Has anyone seen the 50% off deal in the US?  Not on the Steinberg shop or Sweetwater.

It is now available at several locations in the US that I see including Sweetwater, ADK Pro audio, Full Compass and AudioDawg I believe.  I am sure others are coming online soon.

Where is the special pricing Mr. Steinberg?
Today is the 24th...

We have jumped through a lot of hoops to make this available to our dealer channel on such short notice of the news and an incredibly hectic retail day.  It is now online at Full Compass, Audiodawg, Sweetwater and ADK Pro Audio I believe.

So, what about docking and undocking views. For instance, while working in Sonar, I always have track view on one monitor while I have console view on another monitor. Is that possible in Cubase? In Sonar I can undock any view and simple drag it to another monitor.

In version 9 many of the windows are dockable which is convenient for a single screen or laptop use.  each window can be freely located on any available screen and instantly recalled via a workspace that configures the screen layouts of windows as presets that can be assigned globally or specifically to a project.

My gut reaction is Cubase, partly because it is so well established and part of Yamaha.

However lack of ARA support is a deal breaker. I could not have finished my recent album without it.

Does Cubase 9.5 support ARA and if not, will it definitely be in the next version?
Is it possible to use 32bit and 64bit plugin's in the same instance of Cubase?

~ Tony

Cubase does offer ARA support but has a lot of functionality built in such as the VAri Audio editor for pitch correction.

Cubase natively only supports 64 bit plug-ins but with a 3rd party bridging solution like j-bridge people can run 32 bit plug-ins as well.

You know, kind of funny, but back in 1997 I was all set to buy Cubase VST 3.xx, even though the only DAWs I'd ever seen or used were Opcode Studiovision (irony alert!) in an actual studio and Cakewalk Home Studio on a buddy's PC. When I went to the music store to pick it up, the sales guy talked to me for a long time and I ended buying Cakewalk Pro Audio 6, based a lot on what he had to say about its MIDI features (I was using an Alesis D4 drum module and Studioware panels were impressive to me). I just got on the learning/upgrade train then and had no reason to look elsewhere, though at some time in the early 2000's I picked up FL, and more recently have added Maschine into my workflow. And I don't regret it all, Cakewalk/Sonar have always been exceptional IMO. But now, two decades later, here I am, looking seriously at moving to...Cubase.

Can they be assigned/recalled with keyboard shortcuts?

Also, just watching the "What's new" intro video, I see that Cubase has bezier automation curves, something that FL Studio has had for a long time but which I've been wishing to see in Sonar as well. And I've only recently come across the term VCA fader and wasn't sure what it did, but seeing it in the demo video it looks awesome, actually.

Still lots of questions but I plan on attending the migration hangout with those.

Can we get an idea of how long the offer will be?
Would really like to try a demo and don't want to "miss" the deal if I like it.
Where can I get a demo version (have a eLicencer)?

I downloaded the demo, it wouldn't install said there were errors, might have been an internet hick up because the server must be pretty busy. But now my elicencer is telling me Wav Lab is not autorized,, It still works. I'll try again.. I imagine the demo turns into a ligit version if you purchase it , right, IN otherwords I won't have to download 2x.

You'll not be able to put the same license on two dongles.   But even the Sonar license doesn't allow you to use Sonar in two places at once....  they trust you to keep it single user, even if you loaded many machines.

So is it that you are a spokesperson for Steinberg  here?  you pinned this sales ad here against the rules!

You should understand the Karyn is trying to help our members make a transition. You telling a host about rules is laughable. We hosts are sticking to the rules. One big one is no personal attacks. These are extraordinary times on this forum. I applaud Karyn in trying to make a bad situation better. Please stop trying to prevent the distribution of important information.

Yeah while I know Cubase is fine software, the combination of having to have a hardware dongle and the lack of ARA support is enough to probably push me to Studio One.

Yeah, and if you think about it, it seems very unlikely that Steinberg will ever add ARA support to Cubase.  I think that because they created two of the fundamental pro audio standards, ASIO and VST, their ego will now not allow them to embrace any pro audio standard that they didn't create themselves.  They even felt a need to replicate the functionality of iLoK with their eLicenser system, including all of its good and bad aspects, right down to copying some of the same terminology and procedures of iLoK, such as their "Zero Downtime" process.

The most likely thing Steinberg would do to support ARA plugins would be creating their own API to replicate the functionality of ARA, and then expecting Celemony and Synchro Arts and to come out with versions of their plugins to work with that system.  But they probably wouldn't even do that unless they needed such a system to support one of their own plugins.

I would be so onto this(and be purchasing the pro version) if it was available in a few weeks. With it just before Christmas and me just having spent my savings on an Australian tour with my band I just can't do it right now as I also need to eat as well as buy gifts. I guess I'll just use Sonar platinum until I have to switch for one reason or another or another sale comes up. If I could register my interest and pay/upgrade in January you'd have my money.

It seems to me unlikely that Steinberg will ever add ARA support to Cubase.  I think that after having created two of the fundamental pro audio standards with ASIO and VST, they are averse to embracing any technology they didn’t create themselves.  They even had to create their own system identical to iLok with their eLicenser, replicating all of its flaws as well as its good points.

I think the most likely way they would support ARA plugins is by creating their own standard to supply the same functionality, then expecting Celemony and Syncro Arts to modify their plugins to include support for that standard.  I don't even think they would do that unless they needed that support for one of their own plugins, or if they felt the lack of ARA support was hurting their sales.  It did possibly hurt their sales in at least one small way, since it made me drop Cubase off my list of possible SONAR replacements almost immediately, where it otherwise would have been one of the main contenders.

Re: message from Greg Ondo of Steinberg 2017/11/25 02:26:15 (permalink)
Four questions:

1. Is the $255 crossgrade the one that is 50% off?
2. How long will the promotion run?
3. Does Sweetwater carry the USB eLicenser?
4. Up above Greg said that Cubase does support ARA, but there are subsequent posts complaining that it does not.  What is the full story on ARA support?

Thanks!
