Re:Unfair to Sonar 8.5 users 2010/12/07 11:29:55 (permalink)
Can someone answer this for me please? In the past, whenever I have purchased an upgrade, I needed another version of Sonar on my machine as well or the upgrade would not install because it needed other files to install. Will this new version be like that? If so, I've made up my mind that I'll not be getting the upgrade version and will pay a little more if need be for whatever the other version is. If that's the case, how much more would it be to buy the version that isn't an upgrade? I'm a Sonar 8.5 PE user. Thanks in advance.

On the previous page of this thread, Brandon Ryan says:

SONAR X1 is a standalone installation and doesn't have any dependency on previous versions of SONAR.
So, I believe that means you should be able to purchase the download (at the upgrade price since you're a regitered 8.5 user) and install even if the previous version isn't currently on the machine you're installing on.

Still Don't get it 2010/12/07 18:05:13 (permalink)
If I upgrade from Sonar Studio 8 today, I pay 79 Eur and get X1 fro "free" on the 8th...

Now, I upgraded from 8 to 8.5 a long time ago...And in the column under 8.5...is nothing, no upgrade path before the 8th, but I can happily upgrade after the 8th for 99 Eur...

You can try to explain this to me any way you want, but I do not get it and WILL not get it...major flaw in pricing srtucture...

And I will add this (as a Sudio 8.5 customer):

To upgrade my copy of 8.5 Studio to producer 8.5/ X1

Upgrade from SONAR 1-6 Producer or any version of SONAR Studio: 199 Eur

Come on....

I have never needed a previous version to install the latest.
CW9 and then S producer since.

A number of clean installs, never asked for a previous version.

Is it that I just do not remember? That I have blocked all such unhappy experiences?

Re:SONAR X1 upgrade questions and answers 2010/12/08 10:57:51 (permalink)
The only time a previous version of SONAR need to be installed so that the next version would install was with the SONAR 8 to 8.5 upgrade last year.

It only applied to the download version as the content for Beatscape and Dim Pro wasn't included. This was also the first time that cakewalk provided a purchase of a download version.

The 8.5 installer copied some files from the SONAR 8.0 installation and after that process was complete it was possible to uninstall SONAR 8 and run 8.5 by itself without problemL PROVIDED you made sure that the shared folders were not deleted.

EACH version of SONAR has installed to its own folder so that installation was completely independent of any other version. (except in the above mentioned case)

All version of SONAR can comfortably co-exist on one machine. There was a time when I had Cakewalk 7 & cakewalk Pro-Audio 9 then SONAR 3 Producer to SONAR Producer 7 running on the same machine. Now I update old projects over time so that they will run without problem in the newer version and keep only the current and previous versions of SONAR on my machine at any time.

In any case its good to keep the previous version until you have a stable new installation. I don't consider that to be the case until about 6 months after release when all the patches and updates for that version will likely have been delivered.

I wont even install X1 until the first update has been released. As its such a new interface I want to have stability as my main feature and I have that now. Once the first patch is out I wiill install X1 on a quarantined drive so I can  keep working and gradually get to know it while I stil have a fully reliable program to work with. When X1 is stable to my satisfaction I'll make the switch to using it full time. Its the only smart way as far as I can tell when you rely on a product to do your work.

yur not being punished.  but you didn't also just spent at least $100 upgrading 8.5 either.    I also got 8.5  the first few days it came out. but imagine how pissed youd be if you spent $100+ getting 8.5 and just when you got it figured out ...    welcome to X1 and the last month you spent learding 8.5 was pointless. And you gotta shell out $100 more to be just as lost as the rest of us X1 newbies..  Honestly, I think getting X1 for $99 was sweet enough fo rme to be watching the clock like a kid on xmas mornin.  just my humble opinion though.  no disrespect ment..

I have Sonar 8.5.

So am I getting this correct. It will cost 99.00 + 29.00=$128.00 USD to get the boxed version upgrade delivered to me?

If so why is there no option for this as one choice? Why do I have to buy the $99.00 version first and then order the box for $29.00. Is this just plain stupid or what? Would it be so hard to add this as a single option? And a choice to download.

I just ordered the $99.00 and now its telling me I can't get the box unless I order both at the same time...WTF...where was the option?

Please... am I missing something?

Great...now when I try to order the boxed version it wants to charge me 9.95 shipping and will not accept the code they provide for free shipping because the order is under $99.00. This **** pisses me off. I guess I screwed up because I have not seen anyone else with this issue. But if Cakewalk put a bit more thought into their upgrade path as they did in past releases instead of worring about being "GREEN" I would not have to deal with this ****.

Yes. You're missing a call to customer services asking them to straighten it out for you.

Since it is the weekend I submitted online.

This downloading is a pain. 5MB DSL is taking some time. I keep having to reconnect to get the next item because of the time this is taking.

I screwed up in my excitement to order X1...so did Cakewalk for not offering an option to order the entire option of box with serial number. I did not realize what the separate choice of box with no serial number was for until it was too late and I placed the order.  Just worked a 12 hour straight day and failed to do my 2 hour research on the Cakewalk versions.

I have ordered every upgrade since 6 and always just placed the order and received the software in the mail. I did not expect this to be any different.

Green is great but someone should do a Greenbelt Project on this before releasing so all customers are happy.

Sorry for venting folks but I need to release! PffffT!  Ahhh...much better.

....I really think there ought to be a little leniency with this free upgrade, ESPECIALLY since there was zero hint of any new version coming...

What if someone bought 8.5 on October 30th? Seriously...

There ought to be at least a month or two grace period for the free upgrade, for the people who JUST spent the money to buy 8.5.

How about it, Cakewalk? Please. Just paid for the best SONAR; can't pay again this quickly...
If it were me, I'd call and make a personal appeal.  Not unprecedented, and stranger things have happened...

I agree.   if they think your not just ****ing and you use yur manners when you talk to them, stranger things have happened..    you did kinda spend the time to learn 8.5 in vein.  X1 is similar to going from the play station 1 to the ps3..
I would at least appeal to them..  you wont wonder what if? that way.
P.s. I too am a 8.5 owner.  i got it the day it came out to0.   but honestly imo, $99 is a steal. $399  to upgrade wouldnt have been a deal breaker if it worked flawlessly.. they prolly dont have it for sale outright yet cuz its as good as any 5k program I've worked with.    bugs aside-  X1 could actually be the PT killer..
as for the bug issue...  when we rush and buy  it at 12:01 before the box set even hits a store, we litterally are the first to ever use this in masses.  we the people, are gonna pick through it and find most every pssible bug in the first 2 months.   this program design should last at least 4-5 years..

I  used the e-mail support and never received an answer to my inquiry about the shipping. So I called Cakewalk yesterday and the sales guy sold me the box set and did not charge shipping. He checked when I placed the order and said no problem.

Hi everybody

Excuse me if I post in the wrong thread but could you tell me if the new owners of a V-S 700 system who have accessed to the SONAR 8.5 version (so, after November, 1) are considered as official owners of the 8.5 and consequently can benefit from a free upgrade to SONAR X1 ?

Thank you very much

I bought Sonar 8.5 LE and the UA-4FX right around Thanksgiving. I have had nothing but problems with it and apparently even though I registered it and you replied that I registered, somehow it's not validated. I figured if I upgraded to Sonar X1 Essential, maybe things would be better. But when I went to pay for it online and download, they said there was a problem with validation. Do you people want my business? Can I download it for $79? Why is everything so hard with your company. I have a Windows 7 Pro x64 system which I know can run your software. Please help!!!!!!!

trying to make some sense out of all this as I have purchased the wrong items in the past (like Windows 7 Pro instead of Ultimate and my environment was all Japanese instead of English-cost me an extra $200.) Here is what I think. I haven't upgraded in a while because of numerous projects I needed to finish.
1. I wanted 8.5--it is not for sell/ X1 has taken its place.
2. If I want the equivalent of 8.5 producer I should get X1 Producer upgrade.
3. If I am going from Sonar 7 it should cost me $149.
Please instruct.
and thank you very much.

chuckebaby,

Please don't post misinformed, hyperbola. X1 crashing is NOT happening to everyone. It is NOT a very unstable product for everyone.

It's unstable for you and your system and you'd know that if you "read the posts."

I'm no fan boy and have a few issues but overall very stable here and most likely very stable on most systems though even that is impossible to know from "reading the posts."

If you have a problem post the specifics and politely ask for help instead of throwing bombs that have no basis in fact.

Humbly Yours

Oh my, I'm going to get myself labelled a fanboi at this rate............

I appreciate that many users are having some major problems, I also appreciate that there are several rather obvious bugs, but I do object to the statement

chuckebaby

its not my system...read the posts..its happening to everyone.very unstable product

It's not happening to me and I daresay not happening to lots of other people either. You speak for yourself and I'll speak for myself. Thank you..............

yea...i guess the word everyone is alittle over board hu?..thank you for pointing this out..i wasnt trying to be detrimental to the product..i love sonar..really do..but x1 in MY EYES..is broken!!!..i love homestudio 7xl..not as many features but still very stable.
i wonder why that one works fine but sonar x1 wont?..must be my system?i was just trying to give my opinion but was thoughtless to say everyone..its just all the posts ive been reading..it seems like 5 or 6 out of 50 say they have no problems.and those people like yourself and biker are very lucky.i bought homestudio 7xl just to get the upgrade to sonar x1 cause it wasnt available where i was buying.
and now im upset..now maybe..and just maybe..if yourself and biker were having problems like i am..youd be posting things like me!..but .you have a working product so you dont feel the way that (some)people feel.i hope you understand where im coming from.i guess ill try and keep more of my opinions to myself next time..you know where im coming from on that.

Re:SONAR X1 upgrade questions and answers 2011/01/15 02:32:54 (permalink)
Well since this thread is no longer a "sticky" I can assume that CW is both inviting comment and wanting this thread to die.

They told me I'd definitely get an e-mail after I bought 8.5SE (full price) Oct. 7th, and received and installed it on the 13th, which is the same day I downloaded the DimPro/Rapture upgrade which was 17 days before the X1 announcement.

I'm no newbie, and I'm very unhappy.  I remember when the XL versions upgrade price was $199 and I fell for that for 3 years.  And then I stopped.

I didn't buy 8.5 thinking it's obselescence would be written in stone 17 days later, and I certainly gave CW the benefit of the doubt about the end result until now.

I even gave the CW tech guy control of my computer because it wouldn't accept my new DimPro/Rapture serial #s.  I've never stolen from them, I've only given them much money.

But I've been around every version of Sonar, and I've spent time with X1 at my friend's studio with very mixed results.

I've spent enough time on this forum to know some things he hadn't had time for, but he's very frustrated even though he can't say he likes 8.5 better than X1.

That's been my only personal experience with X1 and it frustrates me to no end that I don't have it.  I have the time right now to really see what I'd have problems with it.

It has great promise for both multi-monitor setups, laptop users and guys like me currently on a singular 19" screen.

I'll always wish CW all the best.

Query on downloads. Download size seems to be huge. Can you please share the break up information. I assume its not one huge download.  Also would there be a deadline before which I should download or is it available anytime in the future?
