Karyn They still haven't said who's lifetime they are referring to...
Well, even if it's your own lifetime, they are not lying. They are not making any claims about how many and for how long they will keep making updates. When they stop making updates, still "you will receive every new core feature, enhancement, and even fixes for all future versions of SONAR".
But what if it's Tuesday and we are in Belgium? Will I still get fixes to notation?

bapu your current membership (sheesh.... how many times must it be said, CW does have NOT a subscription plan)
Just out of curiosity. How do you see a difference between a membership and a subscription ? I know how SPlat works, and just thinks you can call it either. Also out of curiosity and totally off-topic: what is this 'bakers' reference that I see popping up now and again ?
In the world of magazines and newspapers, when you cancel you subscription you get to keep the physical copies you already have but get no more. In the world of software, when you cancel your subscription the software stops working. In the world of Cakewalk, if you cancel your membership you stop getting updates but as long as you've made 12 consecutive part payments, you own the software and it will always work. Cakewalk programmers = Bakers... Cake -> Baker....

A) Because the bakers call it a membership, NOT a subscription. Simples. In all other software models that are called subscription when you stop paying you do not get continued use of the software. Pay for twelve months and that version of SONAR is yours to use. Pay for less than 12 monthly payments and you've effectively stopped your annual membership 'early' and have elected to no longer keep the software at all. It's still a membership either way because the bakers say it is. A1) Just because you choose to say atmosphere does not mean everyone will interpret that to mean the sky, but hey.... B) Bakers make cakes, no?

Morvejones One thing i am confused about is how is my price £176.14? ($199 = £136 + 20% vat = £163.20) minus 5 months ive paid already £11.89 x5 = £59.45 , (£163.20 - £59.45 = £103.75) Shouldn't £103.75 be the price?
What makes you think you should be able to deduct the 5 months you already paid ?! There has not been a single mention about being able to do that. Wouldn't make that much sense either since almost everyone will already have paid until some date in the future and so you expect everyone would still get some discount on an already discounted price. Pricing is really very simple: * You have paid for 1 year Platinum + you have renewed for 1 year Platinum : your lifetime offer is $99 (or the EUR or GBP equivalent + VAT). * You have paid for 1 year Platinum, but no renewal yet : your lifetime offer is $199 (or the EUR or GBP equivalent + VAT).
Because if you read the email the price is $199 for lifetime updates minus what you have already paid , thats why people get it for $99 right? As they have already renewed for the year.i have paid for 1 year of platinum plus I renewed paying monthly so instead of paying up front i have made 5 months payments so shouldnt i have them deducted? understand?

If I understand correctly, you started paying month-to-month in Jan, right? So you paid for time that has already passed, with at the most 1 month in advance. On the other hand, if you paid for a year's worth of membership earlier this year, you paid for quite some time into the future. For example if you paid for a year's worth of membership in Jan, you still have more than 6 months left. So I think that is the difference.

Ahh ok, kinda sux tho as i was going to pay month to month for the full 12 months again (being a long time sonar user sinse 2xl,i guess most long term users paying monthly would) now they will write all that off and we all get the £176 offer Hopefully June 1st will shed some more light on it

Yeah I have done, but I generally don't hold out hope for these sort if things. Still a good deal, though, I'm glad I've until 31st August, as I can't risk a few million at the moment.

After having been a Cakewalk user for 30 years, I never thought I'd be reduced to making such a snarky comment, but here goes: Maybe the big announcement on June 1st will include a resolution to my case #313717 (Rapture Pro reverts to demo mode) which has been outstanding for two months, and has gone ignored for almost three weeks, in spite of my emailed pleas. This unresolved support experience is unprecedented in my experience with Cakewalk, and a demonstration of customer appreciation, which supposedly the lifetime subscription offer is, should also include the resolution of this issue.

There has been some discussion in other threads about how Cakewalk's customer service/support team seems to have gone AWOL as of late...perhaps that has something to do with the upcoming announcement? Not suggesting a paranoid speculation (they're gonna take our money, kill off SONAR, then run!) but perhaps there are some big changes happening (call it "restructuring" maybe?) that are more widespread than just payment/membership options for SONAR products. I also submitted a service request a few weeks ago and never heard back, but in my case it turned out to be janky hardware so ultimately it worked out fine, but yeah, I get it. A snarky response is understandable. That being said, given Cakewalk's participation in this and other threads, and their proactive nature in general, I gotta think the support issue is temporary.

I appreciated the membership model rather than the subscription model (which seems onerus and heavy-handed). Ownership vs rental is always preferred. As a marketer (and musician), the change to a lifetime model makes a lot of sense. SONAR is a essentially a mature product. It's not going to have any MAJOR changes or updates...the engine is the engine. The notion that the focus is going to be on plugins etc also makes sense. It's easier to manage and do QA for smaller projects which are customizations for users. Maybe CW will develop a plug that is like Sibelius or Notion etc. The users who need it (not me) would pay a little extra coin when they know it's integrated into SONAR...AND knowing they don't have to pay for SONAR upgrades every year. My take: SONAR is a platform and it's going to get more plugs and customizations to consolidate its market for various audiences. It makes a lot of sense. But we'll see on June 1.

digimidi By the way, I have been with Cakewalk for a very, very long time, going back to Home Studio and then getting the Pro Audio range, then the Sonar range, the X-Series range, and finally the Platinum series range. I have been using Cakewal FOREVER!
Good point! I wonder, what lifetime are we talking about? User's lifetme? Company's lifetime? PC Lifetime? Or product line lifetime? If this update plan actually means flagship product of the company for user/company lifetime then it's quite an offer. If it's something else I'll probably stick with annual updates.
The lifetime updates are of course in reference to the lifetime of the product. We've been doing SONAR for about 16 years, no intention to stop. The future is bright. I see your price is $99 to get lifetime updates (because you already paid $99 earlier this year). If you opted to stick to annual, at the current price you would pay $149. Let's say you multiply this by 5 years. After 5 years, you'd pay $750 going annual. With lifetimes you have essentially paid $99 now (and $99 earlier this year) for a total of $200. Let's use the same logic for 10 years, after 10 years you'd pay $1500 vs. $200. Now, no one, not even us, can answer what the lifetime of SONAR is...is it 10 years, 100 years, 1000 years. What was the recording industry like 40 years ago? But we are more committed than ever and don't forget this our job as well. And finally, this is for the SONAR Platinum, our flagship. Clearly stated in the email.

Yeah, I don't understand why though... I'm not aware of any changes in DAW-dom or in AppleLand that would suddenly give CW a valid business case for re-creating SONAR from scratch. PS... Would it be big news though? Uh, yup.

However it would be zero good news for existing SONAR users because we aren't all going to go out and buy expensive Macs just to get the exact same functionality that we can get for much cheaper on a PC. And it was specifically said to affect all current SONAR users. So that makes a Mac version unlikely to be the big announcement, unless it is that plus something else specific for existing SONAR users. Could it be some very tight integration between SONAR and iPad, or something along those lines? I didn't look into this, but is there already a way you can control SONAR from iPad? I guess you can using a generic MIDI app as a MIDI controller, but it would be interesting if there was a SONAR specific app for iPad. CW already has Z3TA+ and ScratchPad for iPad.

Based on what Cakewalk has said about this in the past I kinda doubt it, but who knows. That's been a pretty common speculation in this thread.
Yeah, I don't understand why though... I'm not aware of any changes in DAW-dom or in AppleLand that would suddenly give CW a valid business case for re-creating SONAR from scratch. PS... Would it be big news though? Uh, yup.
My guess is that because Cakewalk stated that the upcoming news would affect existing and potential new users, people assumed that meant they could be widening the net to try to get Apple users onboard. But as has been discussed, there are already a handful of go-to DAWs on the Mac platform and it seems unlikely that Pro Tools/Logic users would jump ship if SONAR was made available to them. While there would certainly be some extra business on that front, it seems unlikely there'd be enough potential to justify the development resources it would take to get SONAR on Mac OS. But yes, if that were indeed what they have planned, SONAR on Mac would absolutely be big news!

BobbyT THE SUSPENCE HAS KILLED MY CREATIVITY,I WANT FREE UPDATE FOR LIFE AND A FREE COFFEE MUG!!!!!!
I'm not nearly as interested in the update as I am in getting Noel's coffee mug. No...not one like it. I want HIS! ...though I dare say selling Tom Murphy aged reissues could prove to be a significant profit center. (You would think that Gibson would've been all over that already.)

Something for i-Pad and Android could be useful (I only have the latter). But more important, I think that Dan is on the right track - huge SONAR coffee mugs for everyone!!!!

Surface and/or Android pad make more sense than iPad support, IMHO. SONAR is Win only, so most of us don't do iPads. I realize many people may be live sound engineers, and iPads had the early lead in that arena, but with the Behringer X32 and others adding Surface support the options are wider now. I have no interest in paying 3X the cost of an Android pad in order to get an Apple product that is a stripped-down device anyway. At least the surface can work as a full-function PC in addition to being a very good tablet. And for the person who just wants the remote control function and doesn't really care about architectures per se, you can't beat the value of the Android pads. Under 100 bucks for a 10" pad.
