Still think it could be some realtime online collaboration feature where two or more SONARs are synced up. That would be useful to most SONAR users, while a Mac version will mean zilch for 98.72% of current SONAR users.

But now that we know there are 2 things, a Mac version might be more likely to be one of those 2 (but still quite unlikely IMHO). However still useless to the vast majority of current SONAR users.

So my guess is that Sonar …… combines/ merges with another big DAW ! I even have an idea which DAW it is: …. Magix Samplitude.
...

Hmm. This strikes me as remarkably unlikely. How would one go about 'merging' Sonar with Samplitude? They have completely different codebases. I think that would quite likely be a more difficult proposition, and certainly make less sense, than starting a whole new one from scratch.

Samplitude is a very fine product, from everything I've heard and read. And I don't think Magix is exactly on the ropes or anything - they just bought most of the Sony Creative Software fleet, including Sound Forge, Acid and the Vegas family. But I don't have the impression Gibson is looking to unload Sonar just yet, and it wouldn't make much sense for Magix to buy Cakewalk even if they were, so unless Gibson has secretly acquired Magix and isn't announcing it yet, I think this is a red herring.

That offer on Samplitude Suite would be tempting though! Not that I need to learn yet another DAW or anything.

The track record of maintenance of Samp is not to be envied. I bought ProX2 a year ago, and have not been able to use it with VST3 still - first it always crashed exiting if using VST3 in a project, then an update but a month last october Waves updated to 9.6 and VST3 scan crashes, and it still does after the april-2016 update of ProX2.

A couple of years ago I trialed ProX, and Waves Element made it crash every time. It took 16 months before that was fixed. And Magix was still in denial when I reported at the beginning of that period - but Waves confirmed it was a problem and eventually got Magix to fix it.

What Samp may give the world of daws would be some things in gui which are well thought out, some zooming options in fast buttons, some saved select ranges in a list which is useful, otherwise many strange choices by Magix - usually editing is based on selecting objects you are working on, but there are a number of toolbar buttons with various modes that tells what is affected by an edit instead. Very unintuitive in my world. So I went Cubase last fall not waiting for those folks to get around and fix it.

But Samp was probably the best importer of Reaper projects, in EDL format. Put everything in it's place, even midi clips. So I used it to convert Reaper projects to Cubase by exporting in OMF. Also some good sample rate converting algos you have to choose from.

i think in time you will get one. one of the cakewalk staff just made a comment in another thread (i think the latest release thread near this one) about x3 users getting an option to upgrade to platinum and the lifetime deal, so keep watching. i jumped on the lifetime deal as soon as i received the email, to good to pass up

Two big things I can think of:

  • Sonar on Mac
  • Support for recording in FLAC or ALAC to save disk space
It'll probably be neither of those.

Big things I can think of:
  • Staff view replaced by advanced notation editor, Cakewalk's own or 3rd party
  • Easy MIDI controller learn/assign with just a couple of clicks
  • Metering Suite

Since we're all guessing: I think Cakewalk will consolidate Sonar Artist, Pro, and Platinum into one product.

SONAR Arprotinum?

We've already been told that the majority of the customers are Artist.

This rumor started because during a particular period of time, the majority of new users chose Artist. I don't believe the majority of all customers are on Artist, but someone from Cakewalk would be in a better position to know.

It would be really interesting to know the numbers or at least the percentages between versions. I'm platinum, my brother is professional. he upgraded from artist to pro because of melodyne and pro channel. My guess would be in the order of pl 10% pro 20% and artist 70%. As I say it would be interesting to know.

Considering who Cakewalk were hiring last year, it's most likely something to do with HW, e.g. a controller for Sonar. And/or Mac support. That's my expectations at least.
If it's the HW, would be quite irritating cause it'll probably come with lifetime updates, which I jsut bought as a "loyal customer". So then if I decide to buy the HW, I'll be like, "dang, could've saved..." Unless they provide HW discounts of 100euro for lifetime owners.

I think:
1. It should be a Mac version to absorb more users and be more involve in market and business as a professional DAW which cakewalk deserve it because they are always beyond the other DAWs unless they want to be under Microsoft's umbrella like Logic for Mac.
2. Introduce a brand new control surface or one of the famous controller in the market + a patch update for compatibility.
3. Fundamental update to make the sonar communicate with Protools and Mackie controllers. In this case you can improve your studio with a good-looking and professional HW.

I was happy like the others who bought the Roland vs700, and hope one day Roland expand it, but now disappointed because they discontinued the model after about 4 years being in market which is almost nothing for something like this . They even don't bother themselves to release windows 10 driver.

Love is the secret key of Eternity of Humanity.

Hoenerbr already mentioned online collaboration on page 2. Maybe it is some form of tightly integrated realtime collaboration. Imagine being able to invite other SONAR users to your session from within SONAR, and then the project gets synced between the two (SONAR uploads the full project, including all audio etc). The two will then play back in sync etc, and you can record on either/both.

Lots of technical challenges with that, including latency, both needing the same plugins, similar IO setups etc.

Maybe a more limited version, where one SONAR is the master, and you can add new audio and/or MIDI tracks on the slave that can be recorded to. The master would need to at least send pre-rendered versions of tracks to the slave to make sure the user on the slave can hear the full project (they need to be individual tracks to make sure mute/solo works correctly on both sides).

Kinda like Steinberg's VST Connect Pro, but built into SONAR.

Or something.

I still think it's going to be with Nektar.

That would HARDLY be worth this level of hype. They could toss Nektar integration into one of their regular rolling updates.

Maybe but whatever it is I hope they don't choose a toy for such a good DAW like sonar. As i said if they can add the protools protocol, our hands will be open to choose a HW based on our budget.

My guess: significant price drop for both new and existing users. This would explain why the current lifetime renewal shows a regular price of $499 (or whatever it is - mine is in EUR) before being discounted to $99/$199. So I expect that new customers will be able to get Sonar Platinum for $199 or so with a 1 year membership, instead of the $499 today. For $499 they would get a lifetime membership. I would also not be surprised if they dropped Professional.
