Seems sos spoiled the show. Too late Bakers or SOS rushed

Late people are always creative

which seems to happen, especially with sources across the pond, has happened to several big players and then the source pulls the announcement,

Maybe SOS has a different clock in their office thats running fast?

Green Acres is the place to be
I dont twitter, facebook, snapchat, instagram, linkedin, tumble, pinterest, flick, blah blah, lets have an old fashioned conversation!

I don't suppose the third one's goona be that big. Provided Noel never mentioned anything that new in that interview while talking about features.

Call me less than excited.    My prediction: Resources will likely be shifted to Mac development, then there will be PC and Mac Versions with different features and capabilities, and the PC version will eventually become the stepchild. The programming world tends to be very Mac-centric, and the attitude is usually "we'll develop this new idea on the Mac, then do a half-assed implementation on the PC."

Or more likely, the two versions will be developed concurrently like Adobe apps. And if the OSX version is a success then that means more revenue for future development of both platforms. Having to develop a feature for two platforms doesn't double your costs, so provided they use some of the extra revenue to take on new development staff, it's a win win situation for users.

I'm glad those that have been requesting a Mac version are now going to get it. I am not disappointed but a little underwhelmed. I don't have any use for a Mac version. Now I see the Linux crowd will want one too.

I guess the reason for the lifetime upgrade is to give us something to be happy about.

Though in the end this may mean more positive press for CW.

At least the Apple people will have to wait awhile.

When Cake published the upcoming announcement date on their website, users immediately started to speculate about a Mac version. So the "big" news is not so big afterall.
As PilotGav said, call me selfish but after signing up for lifetime updates, I was kinda hoping for something else (PC) to be announced.
Oh well......Economy is very, very slow and I dont blame Cake to try cashing in on Mac users. I really don't care about Apple products, so I can't help feeling a little "betrayed"...but I totally understand, from a company standpoint.

I actually hope it's an announcement that Sonar is migrating to Mac. It's the only thing preventing me from moving to the 5K iMac. As a photographer and sometimes videographer, I've been drooling for that screen. It has always been my music apps that have kept me committed to the PC.

We have a 5k iMac here that's been upgraded.  (Support for Mac clients running VE Pro)
32GB RAM, replaced the 2TB Fusion drive with a real SSD, replaced the CPU with a i7-6700k
It's a nice machine (now)... but it's a *royal* pain to work on.

Anything other than swapping RAM means peeling off the screen.
Need to replace the boot drive?  The screen has to come off.
While certainly possible, you've got one shot to get the screen back on right (using double-side adhesive tape).
Even if you're super tech-savvy, this will get your blood-pressure going.
Once inside, working on the iMac is sort of a cross between a laptop and a mini-ITX machine.
Tight space... (if you want to get to the CPU, you're essentially disassembling the entire machine)
While currently (ironically) the fastest Mac you can purchase (faster than the current generation Mac Pros), you can't add anything internally.  That means all additional drives have to be either Thunderbolt or USB3 (external).
You've got a total of 4 USB3 ports and 2 Thunderbolt.
Thunderbolt drives are outrageously expensive.  ie: 1TB conventional HD is $200.
I typically use 7-8 total drives on my main DAW.
To duplicate this setup with a Mac, it's $2k to $3k just for drives.

This is so true, but it just got me thinking....maybe you can now get into making Hackintoshes.
It might not be a bad idea.  I know from a support issue it might painful, but from what I've been reading about them for DAW use, many people are running stable systems and you can put much more power than what you can get with a regular Mac for far, far less money.

I'm going to now consider building one now just to see if I can get Sonar Mac running on it.

Just refresh www.cakewalk.com. We have one more announcement. I would caution everyone to just relax and read the entire announcement before feeling betrayed.

Whelp.... I hope they are successful with the OSX path!

Sonar X3 (and beyond) has been such a wonderful creation...truly a life saver for me.  Looking forwarded to new and great stuff from CW.

That said, this whole marketing "wait until June 1st" thing (for all us Windows-based Sonar users), now feels a bit like finding out that the super-hot blind date we've been looking forward to having sex with, is actually a guy.

A really hot guy, but still, a guy.  Ha!

Well played, Cakewalk.  Well played.

I didn't see the announcement, but I'm reading in this thread OSX support is coming? I think it's awesome. For those who said it increases their market-share, they are 100% and absolutely CORRECT!! More macs are sold this decade than ever. And a huge majority of PT users run macs. Nearly every major studio uses macs, more creative people use Macs than PCs, and what better way to test your DAW with matched hardware!! For all you peeps (like me) that know PCs are rarely solid as Macs and you wish for Cakewalk to test with myriads of disparate hardware configurations, this is your ticket to freedom!

When you look in Sweetwater's catalog, and shop for DAW's, how many of you might pass up Sonar because you only see a "W" under the picture and no "M"? That is a marketing head-ache. Never looks good to only support one or the other, not that Logic will ever.

For me, running Sonar on a Mac would allow me to run a copy on my laptop and mix/edit on the road. I would like to see if I could do this under one license/activation, though. That would be handy!

Lastly, does the future-proof purchase (lifetime updates) cover switching to Mac?

Re: Big announcements coming June 1st, 2016 2016/06/01 11:25:38 (permalink)
Here's why I'm excited about this:

The lack of a Mac version is what has really held Sonar back as being considered a major player in the DAW world. By adding this compatibility, it adds a whole new market with what is likely many more serious producers and studios in the professional realm who rely on Mac over PC. This means opening a whole new door for Cakewalk which is going to being a slew of brand new customers. More customers equal more money which equates to more development across the board.

The one thing that could totally demolish Cakewalk though is if they don't do it right and they start releasing buggy clients. After seeing what has happened in the gaming industry, I'm 100% against releasing an alpha client to the public. The general public are not alpha/beta testers and giving them test clients is a HUGE mistake because first impressions are everything. You're more likely going to lose customers by introducing them to a client that needs tested than to build the customer base regardless of informing them it's a test client. This is why it's so important for a company to invest in professional testers who know what they are doing when it comes to testing a program and properly reporting bugs. I really can't stress this enough.

Competition will be tough: Logic Pro $199 vs Sonar Platinum $???
I think they [Cakewalk] should (must?) lower Sonar pricing in some point to get new customers from the Mac camp.
