Sonar has been the center of my musical world for a long time.
My world has just crumbled.  My mood is devastated.
It's like losing a close friend.  And it's not so easy to just go out and make new close friends.
I can't even estimate on how much money I've spent on plugins, VST instruments and efx.
And wondering if all of those plugins will work with a new DAW host.

Holding on to hope that Sonar will not end, that some other company will buy it.
Thoroughly depressed and angry!

It seems the Philips thing is not news.
This from Wikipedia:

Gibson purchased Garrison Guitars in 2007.
In 2011, Gibson acquired the Stanton Group, including Cerwin Vega, KRK Systems and Stanton DJ.
Gibson announced a partnership with...Onkyo Corporation in 2012. Onkyo...became part of the Gibson Pro Audio division.
In 2013, Gibson acquired a majority stake in TEAC Corporation.
In 2014, Gibson acquired the consumer electronics business of Royal Philips.

This is terrible news!  I'm sorry for the Cakewalk employees as well.
I sure hope there's some way back in the game for Cakewalk and their staff.  This program is not the best at everything, but it sure is the best 'all around' program.

Can we cakewalk users buy it? Can we bring that much money on the table?

Henry's price would be in the millions. What do you think?

I know. but we all have to pay at least $400 now. If we used that to buy out Cakewalk instead of buying a new DAW it could be possible if we get enough along!

Øyvind, I am afraid you missed something important... Let's say we all will be able to collect enough money to buy Cakewalk from Gibson... And what then? What about money needed to keep Sonar devel & support going?

I know. I am just trying to find solutions.

Probably Ableton for the live stuff, and possibly Studio One for the mixing and mastering...

This is very sad news.   I have been a very loyal Cakewalk user since 1994/95 when I started using Cakewalk DOS on floppy or fix disks.  Since then I have progressed with Cakewalk through the advent their of Pro Audio, then Sonar, then Sonar X series, and now Sonar Platinum.  Sonar has been my #1 DAW for decades.  While I do use Cubase 9, Studio One pro 3, and Mixbus 4, Sonar is my go-to DAW.  I feel like I had a very close and longtime friend die.

I only hope that this Forum and the Software and Deals subforums will continue--they are the first place I go every day to find out what developments have occured, what issues to avoid or fix, and what new products are out there.

I am in shock.

My concern with "everything still works" is that at some point we might be required to upgrade our OS unless we want to leave our current DAW offline and never update it again just to use Sonar in its current state.  If the product is not sold (including it's commitments to current users that paid for lifetime updates), Gibson owes us all a significant refund.

I am very sad indeed. Sonar is not only a vehicle which I've used to transport my ideas. Its been time machine which has let me capture feelings. Almost the same way a photographer takes picture. Ive used Sonar to take my photos with my ears.

I am trying my very best to with hold resentment towards Gibson but im finding it very difficult.
I understand this is just business but if they were going to offer lifetime updates and had any indication that they would not be able to fulfill that promise than they shouldn't have offered it in the first place.
I was one of the dear users who stood behind Cakewalk and Gibson saying "This is a great deal". Fighting off the trolls and naysayers with words of hope. To those people I am very sorry. I cant say I saw this coming directly. I figured at minimum 3 years would pass to at least make it worth our while with lifetime updates.

As I said, I don't want to hold bad feelings toward Gibson but im having trouble not.
Im just grateful they have kept the servers going and this forum (for now).
However I have to be honest, I have no interest in doing so, But im sure there has to be some that are studying that fine print looking at a class action.

I'm hoping that Cakewalk staff will at this point be floating ideas to build a new DAW from scratch. Isn't that how Studio One and Bitwig got started - developers on the teams of other DAW's going off on their own? I'm sure Noel & co. must have felt frustrated and restricted at times by Sonar's ancient legacy - building off of old code, hemmed in by the fact that you can make changes to a DAW but not drastic changes. Maybe this is a chance for them to build the DAW they always wanted Sonar to be but couldn't quite get there on top of legacy code.

I like the way you think!  Just compare this to the acquisition of Tracktion by Mackie.  The devs re-acquired Tracktion and brought the product back from the ashes!!!  http://mackie.com/blog/tracktion-has-new-home

Why?? There is NO WAY MS would be a worse owner than Gibson. NO. FREAKING. WAY. Also, MS is in a much better financial state than Gibson can EVER BE. Lastly, if you were truly anti-MS, then shouldn't you be using Logic instead of Sonar in the first place? Hmmm?

I agree.  Micro$haft purchased Skype a few years ago and systematically ever since began to undermine support for other platforms to the point where the original skype servers and dedicated skype phones and similar hardware no longer function at all.

Personally though, I still have an original Cakewalk Home Studio 9.01 which I purchased for $150 CDN way back in 1998 and to this very day works swimmingly under WINE Windows Emulator in Linux.

While it may lack the Audio and VSTi features of today's software, it DOES NOT phone home to mother for permission and still lays down some mean MIDI tracks.

But I agree.  I'd rather see Cakewalk die and be reborn as something  different and better in the future than let the Windows Idiots get their greasy paws on it.

At least for now as long as it runs under WINE I can still manage to read and export my WRK files and for the time being that's all that I need. :D :D :D

So Gibson!  Here's mud in yer eye for killing everyone's music for the sake of making a lousy buck :P

Imho those choices would be lower among the tiers if sonar replacements. Fine products but workflow for both is so different than sonar that it woukd be awkward. Even most people who use ( unless they are strictly hip-hop) these programs tend to use morw traditional DAWs too. FL and Ableton arw superior for beat making but clunky to the new user, particularly the acoustic musician, for mixing.

I agree.  Ableton, FL Studio, and such may make fine secondary DAWs, but for mixing and mastering on Windows I would probably prefer Studio One or Cubase.

I couldn't believe the news, so very saddened by it. I'm hoping maybe against hope that somehow Cakewalk gets rebooted under a new owner.

Good Heavens I hope so! And I sure hope the Cakewalk Forums and customer accounts will still be operational! I would hate to lose the opportunity to reach out to other Sonar users, especially those who are blind like me. So far, Sonar is the only software I know of that has screenreader accessibility with JAWS.

I Dream of Australia, France, and Canada, three wonderful nations that represent who I really am.

Gibson is trash, there's no other way of putting it. I do not wish Gibson all the best, I'd like to see them go under at this point. Harsh? Maybe. But they are not a good company and haven't been for years. This is worth a read.

http://gawker.com/gibson-...lar-company-1713072808

Yes but honestly this is not a big surprise. In the last 6 months, there were no plans for any big update and only minor updates every month. I just guess it has been too hard taking market share from the other daws - one needs *a lot* of licenses sold every year to sustain a decent development team.

I don't think it really matters who took over Cakewalk after Roland sold it, the company would have needed to inject a lot of cash over a long time to bring some new competitive features to gain market share over the other DAWs.

However, I think the Cakewalk team did an amazing job with the monthly updates, probably working with a relatively small dev team too.

They tried the subscription model but I guess it failed somehow. Then Gibson is a hardware company, they might not have enough software history to understand that it is a totally different business.

What I do hope is that someone will take over the IP, rebrand it and refresh it otherwise Sonar will become a sad pile of code. Microsoft has been focused on creators, they probably could grab Sonar for a good price right now and make it a good asset in their store. Anyway, someone taking over the code would be a nice outcome.

Anyway sad day, trying to figure out between Studio One and Cubase right now...

And good luck to all the Cakewalk employees. Quick guess is that they shouldn't have any issues finding other opportunities. This was an amazing product.

Well, I bought the first Cakewalk for PC - Midi recording and editing only.
I have been with Cakewalk ever since, so it is sad to see the company may disappear.

I'm up to X3 at this point and it does almost everything I need, with the addition of a bunch of plugins of coarse.  The software is still fine, so I will probably continue to use X3 until new plugins, and other things, are no longer compatible.

Hopefully the folks who brought us Cakewalk/Sonar, or at least some of them, will be bringing us a new DAW under a different name.

Cake is and has been a good investment for me. I certainly hope that is it picked up and improved.

I'm not sure I like the idea of Microsoft owning it. If that happens I suspect it will become a truly subscription based product and that would suck.

I’ve been a Cakewalk customer since Pro Audio 4.5. and always stayed true even through the bad times (X1) and really enjoyed the good times. But… Hang on! Oddly enough, I got a PreSonus Faderport not long ago, and I downloaded a trial copy of Studio One recently as I was thinking about hardware/software compatibility.  Studio One installed and ran with no issues, it scanned all of my plugins and synths, including the Cakewalk vst's I had purchased separately like the CA2A, but soon after I started exploring Studio One I proclaimed, "I'm not going to switch to a different daw.  Sonar Platinum does everything I'll ever need and the software makes sense to me.  Plus, I've already paid for lifetime updates."

Studio One is 50% off right now.

First off I would like to say that how much this sucks. The folks at Cakewalk have done a fantastic job at providing amazing software, that allows musicians all over the world to create their music. I have been a Cakewalk supporter since I first bought Cakewalk pro audio 9, and I have used previous version and it has always been a great program. I purchased Sonar Platinum with lifetime updates over a year ago, I was a little hesitant to be honest at first because it was a large sum of money and I had to sacrifice some in order to obtain this program. I have been very happy with Sonar it is in my opinion the best DAW out there. I am extremely disappointed in Gibson by this action. To me I feel like they just took our money and is running away with it. I say this because in the world of DAW's Sonar is among the top in use. Why take away something that people are buying and are using. To be honest why Gibson is the owner of Cakewalk is beyond me, and if I am being completely transparent, I have never been owned any of the Gibson products since their inception, because I have always leaned towards Fender since I plat guitar. This action certainly is not winning me over. If this is how Gibson treats it's customers I certainly won't be buying any of their products in the future. What's that old saying "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me."

I am no lawyer, but I certainly wouldn't be surprised if at some point Gibson faces some legal issues over their lifetime update policy from customers that paid for this service only for it to be taken away.

I can only hope that Gibson makes it right with customers and doesn't just kicked them to the curb.
