Dear Noel and all Bakers !

I'm truly saddened by what I'm reading here.  As a (very !) longtime and loyal user of Twelve Tone / Cakewalk products, this is disconcerting !  Disappointment pure, to say the least !!

I wish you and your team all the best for the future.

(Maybe Greg Hendershott and a consortium of dedicated people will again take back Greg's baby ... really wishful thinking I know ... who knows, miracles do happen once in a while).

Take care all and good luck.
Ted

I strongly suspect the subscription entitles you to all updates but if they produce no updates you're probably not entitled to get anything back since I don't think in the agreement Cakewalk guarantee to deliver any updates.

However it would be good PR if Gibson did something positive for people in a similar situation to yourself.

If Cakewalk is owned by Gibson, then Gibson has to fulfill the contract.
Gibson is authorized to give instructions to Cakewalk.
Gibson is not insolvent.
Lets wait and see. I don't believe that this is the end.

I believe that we cannot do anything about the decision to stop with Sonar. The only thing we can do is hold them to their statement: "When you pay for rolling updates, after  the 12 months you own the software."The same applies to the lifetime updates. Legally they cant take that away from us.

Define 'Lifetime'? Define 'Lifetime' as expressed by another person? it could get tricky, it's game over, that's just how it is.

The problem is that all few weeks and after a change in hardware and Microsoft update, SONAR needs to be re-authorized. If they turn off the server it's the end. Without having the chance to save anything to a new DAW.
Also you cannot install on a new computer.
I don't believe that they will keep the server running the next 10 years.

I only just heard. It's like a death in the family! Don't really know what to say that hasn't been said already. Such ****e news! I don't know what the chances are of Cakewalk living on and Sonar continuing to have a happy future. I guess that's all we can hope for at the moment until there is more info. I won't be switching to a new DAW just yet.

In case this forum suddenly disappears, thank you so much Cakewalk. I have used your software for many years and loved it dearly. I hope the bakers can keep baking. Gibson, screw you!

Splat, Win 10 64bit and all sorts of musical odds and sods collected over the years, but still missing a lot of my old analogue stuff I sold off years ago.

Right, from time to time Sonar need connection to the server for re-authorizion. If no answer from the server, sonar falls in demo-mode. The last thing what they can do for us is, a last version which don't need a connection for re-authorizion. So we can use it as long as we want.

Mmmm

I added a new post just there about Momentum, its short life and talking about Cakewalk future maybe in the Cloud / Mobile?

For some reason it got removed / disappeared. Ok it was in the SONAR section ( no momentum section? ), but so were other posts about momentum

Just wondering why did it get removed? I initially said I was puzzled at its arrival and then sudden stopping of Cakewalk dev .. that maybe the future is mobile / cloud because the younger millenial+ people are more interested in phones and tablets vs a trad DAW

No need to define Lifetime. The statement is that after paying, the software is ours as owners.

Yes, you own a license to use the software, you don't own the software. Can you use the software? Have a read of the EULA, you might be surprised.Whats the EULA? well it's that thing you agreed to when you installed the software.

All the people talking about Law Suits and Class actions today, I don't think Gibson were just bouncing around from wall to wall and all of a sudden came up with the idea out of the blue "Hey, lets shut down Cakewalk", and then wrote out the statement and posted it. I think it would be a pretty safe bet that they have Lawyers advising them of what they can and can't do, what they can and can't get away with, but by all means have it I say, just don't be surprised when you are laughed at or  just spat out the other end.

I'm gutted :(

Just heard about this on the UAD (Universal Audio) Forum and had to come here to double check, Like many on here I have been a CW user for years and I have had the benefit of searching this forum to solve all my issues and had some brilliant help from all of you guys and Craig.

My thoughts are with the employees directly affected by this announcement and would hope that someone(Microsoft???) would step in soon to save this fantastic product from extinction.

My immediate concern now is to ensure that I have the ability to re-Install and authorize Sonar in the event of a PC failure in the future months/years so I can at least re-visit old recordings

I guess the search for a new DAW should commence and I'll wait to see which Craig recommends and wait for his article in Sound on Sound.

I'm devastated, I love this software and it's the only one I use.  I don't intend to buy any other as long as it still works.

The problem is its hosted on Cakewalk servers and when they go we lose all contacts. That's the end. This forum could be gone next week so what then?

There are SONAR users here that will set up a new home for the community quickly if Cakewalk servers go down. I'm not the only one who has planned to do that... If we lose this forum, you should find the new forum by Google search.

Have just redecorated - https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/23231251_10155867604582959_131685489000345198_n.jpg?oh=6e5ca9c542cb352a23554a1a6813f4d3&oe=5AAA7D3C
- almost complete.

... and now the news that SONAR is ending.

I have the lifetime subscription. I'm sitting tight for now and removing my Win 10 PC off the internet. Let's see what happens.

Good luck, a huge thankyou, and I sincerely hope this isn't the end of the line.

In retrospect, my first clue in the demise was the "lifetime updates", then Craig Anderton's recent "announcement"

Can you post a link to Craig's announcement? I tried a search here on his name and nothing came up. A Google search using the site: modifier turned up nothing on the forums that I could find other than his tips of the week were put into an ebook that is for sale.
