This is a tragedy. With this movement, the Gibson brand has lost all credibility. I have been a registered Cakewalk client since Sonar 2. At the beginning of the year I bought a platinum life pass. I think closing the Cakewalk brand is a fraud.People who bought sonar platinum are being robbed of money. What a shame Gibson!!! What a shame!!!

For me it's greener, like there was never anything I missed from SONAR, but if I were to go the other way there would be a lot I would miss from S13. Some people like chocolate ice cream and some like vanilla, others like . . . . .

Depends on what you do I guess, a lot of people will have a quick look at something and say it sucks, doesn't make much sense to me, trying something for a couple of hours or a whole day and trying to compare that experience to something they have used for years. You got to dig in and give whatever it is a good try, because familiarity will tend to win out if you don't, and familiarity takes time. I don't care who makes what, I'll choose whats best for me, I have no allegiance to a Company or a Brand, something better will always come along in the end, and to not go with something you think/know is better because of nostalgia, familiarity, some misguided loyalty (I mean it's only a Company, a peice of Software, not talking about Cakewalk or SONAR, but in general) is foolishness. Stay with what you think is the best for you, what works best for you.  SONAR will keep trucking until it doesn't, you can stay with it until you are forced to go elsewhere, or you can plan a preemptive strike, demo demo demo, only you can find out if something suits you, is better for you

[edit] My needs are different to yours, which are different to anothers, which are different to anothers . . . . it's all relative

It would be nice if Cakewalk users boycotted Gibson from here on out, to give them some extra help easing into that grave they've so capably dug for their brand.

I agree. Been here since CWPA 6-late 80's, early 90's I guess, who knows.

Re: Cakewalk Announcement 2017/11/22 07:29:09 (permalink)
Things I miss from Sonar in Studio One:
1. Step Sequencer
2. ProChannel (when it works correctly). This is somewhat alleviated with Brainworx's Console line of plugins, which contain well-emulated vintage EQ, Compression, and console channel emulation.
3. Drag quantize in PRV
4. Sonar-specific plugins (e.g. TH3 Sonar).  Quick note here: Focusrite users can get all the AAS session plugins for free right now, so Focusrite users accustomed to these in Sonar can now port them to Studio One.

Overall, StudioOne is a bit of a paradigm shift, but a positive one. I found myself more productive on average in S1 than in Sonar, but I love the vast array of Content that Sonar comes with. Fortunately, most of it (loops, Dimension Pro, Rapture Session, VX1) can be used in outside DAWs.

First of all, I'm really saddened to read this, I actually can't believe it happened. I had a LOT of joy using Cakewalk & SONAR in the past, and also managing CakewalkNet users website back in the 2000's. Thanks a lot Noel and all the kind folks at Cakewalk, I really hope Microsoft or some other company could buy and sustain development, a product like SONAR shouldn't stop this way. Good vibes and all the best, Hans Van Even

AS mentioned by someone before....We really NEED and deserve a definitive answer about being able to reinstall Sonar and plugins. I know, many like me, have upgraded everytime. I skipped Sonar 2 upgrade. The ONLY upgrade I did not buy since starting with CWPA 6 decades ago. Yes also fell for the lifetime updates.
Gibson are the ONLY people that can correctly clear this up.

I mean Studio One Pro 3.5 is on sale at 1/2 price at sweetwater. $199.00.  I am an old timer, viet nam vet, so that will give you an idea. One of my great joys in life is sitting in my little home studio and recording, mixing and mastering.

I'm planning on installing the trial of Studio One. Then I'll do my own testing. Today I've been setting up for leaving SONAR - installing non-Cakewalk plugins that I have but never installed. I'm hoping my bundled versions of Addictive Drums 2 and Session Drummer 3 work outside of SONAR. Also CA-2A, Concrete Limiter, the LP effects. I haven't given this a lot of thought as I never expected this to happen, so can't list the ones I'm most interested in. Mostly I have only used the instruments and effects that have shipped with SONAR. They're good, and I haven't bought much third party stuff. Thanks for your interest, but I'll figure it out.

Sadly it is only a matter of time before SONAR becomes unusable. The authorization servers WILL be shutdown - it's not a matter of if but when.

Such are the perils of modern software licensing. The user doesn't own the product, only a non-perpetual, revocable license to use it.

I have been burned too many times by DRM-protected software and will not be purchasing such software again.

Re: Cakewalk Announcement 2017/11/22 09:26:01 (permalink)
Just remember guys. Don't panic!
The software will keep working in the state it's in. If in doubt, upgraders can use current projects in older versions of Sonar (it's backwards compatible), and we can all start demo-ing other DAWs in the meantime. I downloaded Reaper and Mixcraft this morning, and I'll be keeping an eye out for Black Friday deals.
Best case scenario - Gibson will see the error of their ways and keep Sonar alive.
Possibilty, someone like Microsoft might buy up Sonar (though that is often the kiss of death...remember Nokia).
Worst case, Cakewalk will cease to be, but the DAW will keep working.
Gibson HAVE TO respect the yearly subscription agreements (it's contractual) or face lawsuits, so there must be some plan put in place for current users. Sure my lifetime subscription doesn't mean **** now, but at least I got a good year of updates under my belt.

What a shame. I've been using Cakewalk software since Home Studio 9 in the mid 90s and have happily stuck with Cakewalk, even after trying other software over the years. It'll be a bit of challenge to have to start anew in time.

Thanks to all who've played a part with Cakewalk. Wishing you the best with whatever new adventures lie ahead.

... but I would love to have sonar platinum install files so I can install them later and not have to rely on the server.

Me too. But the problem lays not in installation files but in authorisation procedure. I think Cakewalk should release last version with S/N only auth procedure... as it was with early Cakewalk Pro Audio versions, when you simply entered SN digits from the original CD.

I am Cakewalk user since the mid of the 1990s... Earlier I was using Atari Cubase but in the studio I had to convert my files to Cakewalk Professional 3... so I decided to enter Cakewalk users community up to now...
