Hmmm, is it just me or have those two forums just been vaporized?

Unless I am not understanding something those 2 forums still appear to be there, you might have to adjust the time period down the bottom of the page, once set to 'from the beginning' they show 27 and 35 pages respectively.

This is only applicable in the mobile version of those forums (they only load an error page). The full version of the web pages load fine.

i notice that "the bakery" place really has been vaporised

Re: Feature Requests + Improvements [New 29/3/2018] 2018/03/31 10:24:27 (permalink)
Hi Meng, hope your bakers can take a look over this requests!

I´d like to suggest some features that will improve my workflow and hopefully some other people would benefit from it too.

- Tab to transient: Works wonders with individual tracks but starts to fail when tabbing with grouped clips, that´s really annoying
- Group clips: I wonder why when tracks are grouped if you select one track and make a split it doesn´t make a cut in all tracks, that slows a ton the workflow when cutting tracks to edit them to the grid.
- AudioSnap: Those who work professionaly need to speed up our editing time. Now audiosnap is the only way to edit multitrack drums ala BeatDetective way. Your select your markers, merge them and cut. So far so good. Now it comes the bad part, the session begins to slow down, if you ever dare to save the session it will take maybe 3 minutes and 300mb size. That´s really bad and why I mainly switch to PT for that. Also audiosnap markers cut the transient in the middle not in zero crossing.
- Strech clips only works with one track at a time. So if you´re trying to strech your 20 drums tracks for some cymbal bleed you have to do it one by one = phase problems/artifacts
- Enable a quick quantize button that will move to the selected grid without having to set the parameters in the quantize menu, like you do on PT, just press a key and move. Bang!!
- To be able to change the keycommans, for example slip edit tool is alt+shift for lefthanded is a pain, it would be great to be able to remap it.
- Track templates dont keep phase invert button, sidechain sends to plugins and pre-post button on the prochannel.
- Create a import session data like protools where you can actualy select which tracks/buses you want to import.
- Color markers, so you can difference better the song parts (like PT)
- Auto fade in/fade out option, so when you cut a clip it automaticly makes a 1ms fade in/out preventing clicks (cubase does it)

Thanks for the interest and transparency.  I always felt Cakewalk and Sonar development was very user-oriented, and now it appears will be even more so!

1.  Easier compatibility with the standard MIDI keyboards / controllers.  I understand from friends that other DAW's work fairly seamlessly, using ACT is a bit of a pain, and frankly I've ignored most of my keyboard controllers due to the hassle.
2.  Fix Melodyne issues.  Integrated Melodyne has been a huge asset for my work flow, but does have some bugs as noted.
3.  Not directly DAW related, but improve search capability in the User Forum.  For me, this user forum has been THE single biggest asset of Sonar - it's a great DAW, but using the knowledge base from other users has exploded my understanding and use of the DAW.  But I am forever running into an issue (that's usually user-induced), can't find a thread when searching for quite some time, so I post a question and within minutes some astute user has not only the answer, but links to other threads with the same issues.  That being said, this is the BEST user forum of any product of any sort that I have ever seen, hands down.
4.  Long shot - but as one previous post - make a Mac OS version.  My ONLY Windows based computer is for Sonar.  I was partly excited when I learned Sonar was disappearing - if I was going to have to give up Sonar, at least I could finally get on a Mac based DAW and be done with Windows.  (And running Windows on a Mac isn't the same - you still have to deal with the Windows issues.)  I love Sonar enough I'll stick with my PC for TDFKAS, but the thought of a Mac based TDFKAS gives me chills of excitement...

STAFF VIEW Updated....

BE able to work in transposing clefs (like a Bb Trumpet),  Cubase has some nice features in their staff view, but getting different views is clunky and not easy to get around like SONAR is.

A Piano Roll like grid view that uses staves instead of Piano notes would be the greatest thing ever and i can't imagine it being hard to do.

Thanks for putting this sticky up.

I would like to see a visible button that tells us when ripple editing is on or off.
I would also like to see a pre-roll feature that's been suggested elsewhere in these forums.
An arranger track would be nice, also.

that way you can split, copy, cut, and paste entire sections of a song and rearrange in any order.

You can already do this with Ripple Editing

Does this take the tempo changes too?

Re: Feature Requests + Improvements [New 29/3/2018] 2018/04/01 02:14:37 (permalink)
Hi, I would really like this bug fixed, where placing Vst's on buses can cause some kind of audio overload/distortion. my RME UFX software redlines with a horrible distorted - and loud - garbled noise through my poor monitors. Now is doesn't happen every time but I can guarantee that at stage in a project's development, that I will experience this as I add various Vst's to one or a number of different buses.

I can usually save the project when this occurs - and I ensure I do this every time before placing such, and when I shut down Sonar and restart it, it's all good for the life of that particular bus and vst. However, adding another can cause it to occur again.

I have reported this issue ages ago and Noel suggested turning of the audio engine and deselecting the 64bit engine but this has mixed results and is at best a potential workaround which does not fix this issue from occurring again.

I would really like to have the confidence to add vst's to buses without this dreaded issue happening every project build.

Also, setting up a side-chain for a track with a vst on a bus often will crash Sonar.

Thanks and I hope you can address and fix this issue in future builds.

An Arrangement Track - Containing
  • Part name –Intro, Verse, Chorus, etc
  • Key Signature
  • Tempo and Tempo Map
  • Key Signature
  • Chord of the Bar/Measure (Chord Track to be within the Arrangement track)
  • Mode/Scale of the Bar/Measure (Typically the Key Signature, but free to step outside it).
  • Notepad

PRV, Staff View or TAB view, have shortcut keys that do the following when moving notes, in respect to the chord track
a)      Press nothing = Move chromatically (Or Snap to Scale – being the scale se in the Inspector, when this is switched on. (This is the key of the song the master key, not the mode of the bar, although often these are the same)
b)      1st Short Cut = move diatonically to the mode from the chord track.
c)       2nd Short Cut = Move to the chord tones of the chord track
d)      3rd Short Cut = Move one octave.

Tempo track in Sonar looks ancient, compated to for example, Reaper's tempo track. Can't insert smooth tempo ramp with just 2 points - must insert myriad of tempo events. Can't move or modify two or more tempo events simutaneously. Can't copy-paste pattern of tempo events. Can't speed up whole song with one command if there is some tempo events - have to modify tempo events one by one... Etc, etc.

2. Update Analyst AN-879 great plugin

It's the only plug-in I know of that does multiband envelope following. This is incredible for EDM and would be a very cool thing if there was a good tutorial on how to use it.

Another request: I don't know why sometimes FX Chain controls lose their links to effects within the chain, and have to be reassigned. It's a drag to load an FX Chain and find that some controls don't work, then have to take it apart and reassign everything.

The first 3 books in "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" series are available from Hal Leonard and http://www.reverb.com. Listen to my music on http://www.YouTube.com/thecraiganderton, and visit http://www.craiganderton.com. Thanks!

I moved to S1 after what happened with sonar. Yet I keep getting back to sonar mostly coz I feel more creative with Sonar  (and it mostly has to do with the GUI). However I noticed some cool features with S1 and one of them is a deal breaker for me.

1. Ability to navigate through plugins in a single window(Like tabs)
2. Search function while inserting plugins in fx bin.

And the deal breaker for me is:
3. How S1 handles multiple outputs of multi timbral instruments.

The whole process is extremely easy and customizable at any stage of the project with ease. Please implement a similar feature.

4. Also, I like the midi editing in S1 using mouse wheel for almost everything, move, length, pitch, velocity..

Wishes:

1. Re-sizable transport screen, especially the record button. Just added a 20" touchscreen to my studio for vocals and drumming (I can sing way better standing up and hit the high notes better). It's mounted to the wall by a nice articulated arm and can be swung up higher than my eyes to help align my throat to release air better. I scroll my lyrics on the screen but can barely hit the record button as it is minuscule on the screen and my average fingers feel gigantic compared to the little on-screen record button. Also, I have my little Roland drums right next to my computer desk and can now swing the touch-screen monitor over my crash cymbal where I can easily touch it to start/stop recording. Again it would be better if the record button were much larger.

2. Ability to edit audio track volume simply by cutting the track before and after the too loud section, and then simply dragging the wave form down to a lower volume.

3. PRV view for midi drums. Instead of little diamonds representing the drums, how about images of tom toms, snares, etc?

Good point!  Cakewalk was close over a decade ago with a loop-sequencing product called Project 5, but they buried it after v2.5.  It started out as a soft synth workstation and audio/MIDI loop sequencer in v1, but added audio recording and a Groove Matrix to v2.

https://www.soundonsound..../cakewalk-project-5-v2

So it had a little bit of Acid, Reason, FL Studio, and Ableton Live, combined with an easier workflow than Sonar.

It would have taken some work to update it for 64-bit and multi-core CPUs, but the old version I have still runs on Windows 10 64-bit.  I open it every now and then, but I can't use my 64-bit plugins, so I would like to see this rise from the ashes with a refresh!

I recall P5 having a very active online community of its own, that eventually moved on to other things...
https://www.mixonline.com/recording/cakewalk-launches-dedicated-project5-website-373653

Hint: the project5.com domain is available!

This end-user site still works, and contains some useful P5 information and links >> http://project5.technetos.com/

Just look at where Live, FL, & Reason are today.

Re: Feature Requests + Improvements [New 29/3/2018] 2018/04/01 17:36:38 (permalink)
My top-5 features would be based on improving things mostly:

1. Implement common industry standard regarding controlling daw from midi controllers or other surfaces. Right now it is very poor, so to speak.

It is also would be nice to be able to make midi-learn for buttons, knobs and sliders - just like in vsts, but for whole daw.

2. Add midi send to midi tracks. This would simplify layering. So I can have one midi track and easily send it to many synths/instrument tracks

3. Improve support for high dpi. Right now it is pain in the ass to draw automation lines on 4k display, for instance.

4. Step sequencer must become a complete tool that arpeggiator, automation (!) and pattern creation capabilities (suggestions mentions above in this thread are appreciated). Together with item 2 this would make the daw fantastic for electronic music production.

5. In console view a section with level meter must be made resizable. It should be possible to have very long and precise meter and volume slider (makes a loooot of sense on big displays).

Stability
Color control (i.e. one set of colors for tracks that stays there and applies to new clips without having to pick colors again.  If this risks stability - forget it.
Keep the GUI real similar to what we are use to with Platinum.
THANKS for asking.

This whole experience made me aware of one thing. Exporting and archiving does not work well. Many times it just stops with a cryptic message and no possible resolution. So, my request is:

1) Fix OMF output to work consistently. I never got it to work on a single project.
2) Review other options like track dump, it sometimes ignores the multiple takes and you get layers of takes on each track.

Archiving has been an important part of recording since the early days of tape and probably before. A reliable way of archiving and exporting is absolutely essential.

Improve the Media Browser player. It is very simple and primitive.

We are browsing among thousands of samples, I think it is necessary at least one play , pause, stop buttons and be able to see and jump from one point to another of the waveform.
