I am wondering how much "behind the wheel" time on X3 the OP is putting into learning X3. This same thread exists in several places in this forum. People scream for change then get upset when it happens. Craig had a really funny post on the steps of progression learning X3 in similar thread. If the OP looked at X3 as its own entity, you will be pleasantly surprised by what it has.
This thread is like me jumping from a 70s vintage car to a new one and flaming that the points and carb are missing!
ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

Near as I can tell - Noel posted a really well laid out explanation as to why work flow variations in 8.5.3 allowed what they did, but that those variations were not at all intended allowances, but rather were development deficiencies. They cleaned up those deficiencies in the X series, with X33 representing the current pinnacle of current development. Bottom line is that while those 8.5.3 variances have been creatively used to construct a work flow that really works well for a single user, they were never intended to be there, and are now gone, and will not be coming back. I have no issue with the OP having discovered those functional allowances in 8.5.3, and for building an efficient work flow for himself from those. Those things that worked like that were not intended, and were tightened up now, and that\'s quite simply that. If your work flow is that attached to being able to continue to do whatever you are able to do with 8.5.3, then by all means have a blast continuing to do so. If you want to use X3e for anything, great, have a blast doing so. Continuing this particular thread, however, is in my opinion a colossal waste of time, both for the OP, and for those who for some reason are still following it. There's no need to be bashing the OP for wanting to continue to use techniques that work well for him - those techniques will continue to work well for him, in 8.5.3, and no further in the product line. Everybody, please move on from this thread, as it has become the Python Parrot, not pining for the fjords, not stunned - it is dead, deceased, it is no more, it is a non-parrot. Bob Bone

Noel rocks...and he's not the only one at Cakewalk who does! But again, I'm glad this thread happened. It helped me figure out a better workflow than what the OP did with 8.5 and I'd been doing with X3...a best of both worlds situation. So the thread can now die, since I got something out of it

I think multiple folks may have gotten things out of this thread. I did too, in terms of X3e approach, and I believe the OP affirmed what he has been operating with, in that however he got there, product weirdness and all, he has a workflow that meets his needs very well. The trade off for him is that he will live in a time warp of 8.5.3 (also a very good release), unless he begins a process of finishing all that he can in 8.5.3, and then completes any further project work in X3e or beyond, through project completion. That may continue to work well for him. I think it was a good thread, for the most part, once folks settled down a bit and kept it to supportive discussion. There will always be some left-handed guy playing a right-handed guitar upside down that will shake up the world, a bass player in diapers, a lead singer who cannot articulate, a one-armed drummer, and so on.. Point is that however folks are able to express themselves, in ways that work for THEM, music and art will survive and thrive. Rock on, OP, rock on. Bob Bone

thnx for this, but I had this workaround figured out a few days ago like I mentioned in my previous videos and earlier. This workaround is limited in its applications for my type of workflow. Like I've mentioned clearly many times, I do this on a ton of elements in a single project, I leave it to you to understand how much of a mess it becomes once things need to get a bit more elaborated - thnx for the time though.

I said helped ME figure out a better workflow. Your workflow with 8.5 is not ideal for how I work, nor do I work with loops the same way you do. I create loops from nothing by dragging one-shots in from the browser, and augmenting by recording tracks which are comped - I don't deconstruct existing loops. So what you do with 8.5 is not relevant to how I work. However, the tips helped me figure out a way to improve on what I do with X3.

Well, we could have a massive tangent about Newtonian determinism vs quantum probability in a loop-editing context. That'd liven things up.

I understand what you're saying! and we probably work the same as I never use premade loops in my creations either. My point for Layers from the begining has been the layer workflow (yup, there is such a thing bakers, and you were at the forefront of it.) The ability to be creative and freely mold any part, from a rough ball of multiple layered clay to something precise within one simple channel strip. Bass, vox, tuba, fart, burp or ants having sex, who cares, looped over 4 bars or not looped and asynchronous, all of those are irrelevant details that became the buzzword of this thread like "hey I can mangle with one drum loop too in X3!!" All this to say : It did not need any fixing. Layers and Lanes could've co-existed regardless of the in-ability of cakewalk's team of programmers to understand the creative power behind this simplistic layers concept (or defect according to them) -

Noel Borthwick [Cakewalk] To summarize, "one size fits all" tools like what existed in 8.3 are problematic since they don't handle any workflow particularly well. The tools and workflow that we implemented in X1 and higher follow paradigms that focus on perfecting specific workflows (like comping) rather than the all in one approach. Please try and use folders and tracks with quickgrouping and sends and you will find that they are as usable once you invest a little time learning them. Once learned you don't have to think about it and it will become second nature and not interrupt you.
Well the folder & track workaround is just not working. However! I have to say that after a bit of custumization, I have been able to replicate al most of what I needed from layers, but within lanes! and without having to through any folder/bus workaround. After modifying a few behaviours and appareances, I'm getting the Scratch Pad feel I'm looking for - Yet one key details is missing but that would be solved by making one simple options available, like described below : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4hIMchE5Eo&feature=youtu.be If anyone can chime in...

I think if you are trying to fold/spindle/mutilate X3 back into 8.5.3 that it will not likely work well for you. But, at BEST that is a guess - in any case I hope you find something with X3 and in X3 that will allow you to meet your needs. Bob Bone

Oh - I meant nothing by the earlier post - truly just tried to suggest that it (X3) may only bend so far, if trying to get it to behave like 8.5.3 - I made no judgment on whether or not trying to do that was good or bad. Quite the opposite - I support you deciding whatever work flow works for YOU, and if you can get whatever release of whatever product to do your will, then cool. Bob Bone
