This Forum topic sure has had a few interesting tangents. I also, however, find it a little frustrating that all of us who supported Cakewalk in quickly puchasing 5 Pro don't get the free update. I understand the marketing aspect of it. But maybe you guys should also make Pro 7 free if you buy the Pro 6 upgrade in the first month (Like I did with Pro 5).

Regardless, I love your products and couldn't accomplish what I do without them.....or at least not as easily!

Can't wait to see whats new.

I have to say I am astounded by people who think buying V5 early should entitle them to a free upgrade to V6. That makes no sense at all. And would early adoption of V6 (as a free upgrade) then entitle them to a free upgrade to V7 when it arrives... and so on?

The CW business model makes much of it's income by selling regular upgrades so, to start giving upgrades away would be a financial disaster for them and that's bad for all of us. I think the problem here is that people are falling for the marketing spin that is being put on this offer. The reason CW are doing this deal is that, now everyone knows that V6 is almost here, the value of all that V5 inventory has just dropped dramatically. No-one in their right mind would now pay full price for V5. That was not the case when early adopters bought their copies.

To put it another way - no-one is actually getting a free upgrade to version 6. If you buy now, at the end of the V5 life cycle, you are actually buying V6 and CW are saying, "While you wait, have a free copy of V5 to keep you going since their worthless to us now".

...then you've had the pleasure and utility of having it at your disposal all these months :-) That's what you paid for, after all, and what you will be paying for next month if you choose to upgrade to 6: The license to use it between then and when 7 comes out (and past that, even, should you choose to)

Having said that? I do think Cake should have more special deals for long-term customers... Rapture for $99 if you own DPro and Sonar or P5 and Sonar? maybe? I might be able to talk myself into that. Like they're doing the P5 deal right now.

I installed my S5 upgrade (purchased as part of the S5+S6 for $180 deal) yesterday......only to find out that the MUTE TOOL BUG is unchanged/unfixed in S5. All that "you need to try your project in S5 -- the bug should be resolved in S5" talk that I got from the Cake folks is a bunch of nonsense. At any rate....the REST of S5 seems to be pretty nice.

Now I don my flame suit for my annual question:

Will the copy protection method be the same for Sonar 6?

Carl, if you could get authorization to break the NDA to answer this one question, it might give you a leg up on the competition (unless, of course, there is a change planned).

My question is not as OT as it might appear. Suppose you took advantage of this free v6 offer and found that it had C/R or a dongle when you received it?

It's free, so you couldn't complain, right?

I just think it would help to at least let people know whether or not their free version will have stricter copy protection or not.

Does a free offer free the seller from full disclosure?

My point is very simple. Don't say, "I deserve to get V6 for free too", because no-one is getting V6 for free. It's marketing spin. You pay for V6 and they give you an essentially worthless version of V5 while you wait.

The CW business strategy is to sell V6 and give away V5 but they have to advertise it as sell V5 and give away V6. And yes, if you bothered to think about it, you would see that there is a significant difference between upgrade to V5 and get V6 for free and the reverse situation. By saying you are buying V5 they limit the offer to people who haven't already upgraded to V5. If they advertised it as upgrade to V6 with a free copy of V5 thrown in then everyone who had already upgraded to V5 could get in on the deal and get an extra license for V5 which they could then pay to upgrade to V6 and get an extra license for V5...etc. In that way, anyone could get as many SONAR licenses as they wanted for the cost of upgrades and CW would lose money. But, if they say, "Buy V5 and get V6 free", then you buy earlier which is more money to CW because a dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow.

This is Chapter One, "Introduction to Business" material - no specialists required.

I bought Sonar 4 when they were giving away S5 for free with the upgrade to S4, but they never told me if I waited, I could have got S6 for free! I only would have had to wait like another year!

When software companies lower their prices or improve their product they are just stealing from their existing customers! I don't even know what it is, but it has a bigger number than the one I got and that's not fair!

[*/sarcasm off]

Cheers.

The copy protection is getting a little more stringent, but that is still less than what I hear the competition is doing for their new version. They are asking for your first born child, your social security number, and a lien on your primary residence. We'll just be happy with your first born. :)

Seriously, I guess I can tip my hat a little. You can expect the same level of copy protection that we had in Version 5.

Thanks, Carl... always good news.
I appreciate this level of respect, and have voted with my wallet many times now for the Cakewalk copy protection scheme.
I don't abuse my licenses, and you don't abuse me.

Looking forward to Sonar 6 and Project5 Version 2.* -

Take care,

Now, I just have to wait for it to show up .

Yes, my S5PE update came yesterday. Yee haw!

(A bit behind the thread on this comment...) One other reason I'm so jazzed for this special (to have both Sonar 5 and 6), is that there's the possibility that add-ins from one version might not be in another - VSampler and Timeworks EQ come to mind - and this covers that possibility. Thanks Cakewalk!

Same Here,

Ordered on the 2nd (got my my order confirmation #,too), but hasn't been shipped or billed yet. Does it usually take this long to ship out? How long did it take to get your order?

Patience is over-rated...

Nice OS, BTW

I havent been charged, didnt get an email and have no serial number or activation code
I got nothing
Yeah I talked to sales twice , and I'm in, so they said.
I guess I have to wait until the end of the line for some odd reason
I bought both Studio and Producer versions the last 2 releases
and I don't see me buying S6 being any differently than that
except I am supposed to get S6Pro FREE
Maybe that's it?
