Seriously, I guess I can tip my hat a little. You can expect the same level of copy protection that we had in Version 5. Thank you for sharing that! I've been debating with myself whether I should move up from 4, and that really tips the scales in favor of upgrading.

(For those of you who care and are keeping score) Cakewalk Rocks Woo Hoo Ed, I was just about to post that I checked on this and you are all set. I guess customer service beat me to it. We had such a surge of SONAR 5 orders, that we did not have enough finished kits on hand to meet the demand. So a few orders were delayed by a few days while manufacturing caught up. Everyone's orders should be shipping now.

ORIGINAL: Carl Jacobson [Cakewalk] ORIGINAL: Bill OConnell Now I don my flame suit for my annual question: Will the copy protection method be the same for Sonar 6? Carl, if you could get authorization to break the NDA to answer this one question, it might give you a leg up on the competition (unless, of course, there is a change planned). The copy protection is getting a little more stringent, but that is still less than what I hear the competition is doing for their new version. They are asking for your first born child, your social security number, and a lien on your primary residence. We'll just be happy with your first born. :) Seriously, I guess I can tip my hat a little. You can expect the same level of copy protection that we had in Version 5. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Seriously, when Steinberg went to a dongle for Groove Agent 2 that stopped me dead in my tracks for upgrading from the original GA. Ditto for IK Multimedia when they went the dongle route for Amplitube 2. Those 'other' companies you talk about, would one of them be East/West? I understand they might be going the dongle route for new releases. I have a few of their packages, and while good, dongle/Pace would definitely put me off of them. In the end, if one has to have copy protection, then I find Cake's cp about the best. Second for me is NI's challenge/response. Some people would argue that, but that's my opinion. Bottom of the barrel - dongle/Pace/ILOK. First born - no human children, but would you take one of my cats (he asks jokingly)? Take my wife, please!

ORIGINAL: Carl Jacobson [Cakewalk] As a SONAR 4 customer, you will no longer have the most recent version of SONAR once SONAR 6 comes out. The best upgrade pricing always goes to customers who own the most recent version. Your upgrade price will go up once SONAR 6 is released. So if you are planning on upgrading, I would suggest doing it this month. Carl, I upgraded to S4 soon after it came out but actually, if I had stuck with S3 I would be much better off as I could now go straight to S5 and get S6 for nothing. The fact that the upgrade is the same from S3 or S4 really sucks. So much for being a loyal customer. Nothing has driven me further from Sonar. (What did 4 have that 3 didn't? Surround sound. Did I ever use it? Nope.) I have to admit that S4 will probably contain all that I'll ever need. So unless you can tempt me with some substance (and no, not that sort of substance), I'll not part with my family's dosh. Hendrix reckons a 6 is as good as a 9, I reckon it's as good as a 4 until someone tells me what this 6-appeal is all about.

See? There you are, I didn't use MPEX time scaling. I was sure S3 had Freeze but maybe not (seems so long ago). Didn't really use Track Layers -- Folders, for sure, but Layers? not that I can remember. Definitely used the video thumbnails. What I really want is S6 to either integrate a scoring tool like Finale or contain a seriously improved scoring tool. Is there a teeny chance that S6 has that?

Don't forget too, that version 4 solved the annoying problem of losing control of your transport from your computer keyboard while making adjustments to a DX or VST screen. It used to bug me that you had to click in the track pane to get your transport to work every time you made an adjustment!! I guess no one really figured out a name for it to hype it as a feature, but it was a MAJOR improvement in my work flow. Bottom line, sure, you can skip a version now and then if the features don't float your boat, but really, how can you beat Cakewalk's upgrade policies?? I'm glad that Sonar will continue to be dongle free. I have a few dongled products, and tolerate them, but I definately like not having one better!! I recieved an email from shipping and my version 5 will be here tomorrow!! WOO HOO!!

For those still debating the upgrade: The Sonar 5 upgrade is great. I'm very happy with a LOT of the workflow enhancements from Sonar 4, yet it still feels much the same -- so I don't have to re-learn everything. I think the upgrade is DEFINITELY worth it....especially with this deal. I'm working with tech support right now to try to resolve the MUTE TOOL BUG.....but other than that, I'm completely happy with the upgrade. If you're wondering whether to make the jump, GO FOR IT!

Actually nothing was mentioned in any emails i received about the 'you'll get 6 when its out' offer. Anyone know how CW are keeping track of everyone?! Stratcat33511, Glad to hear that yours has been sent. I have gotten nothing but the run-around everytime I have called to check on the status of my order( that was put in over a week ago). I have gotten answers from "Oh yeah, it'll ship tonight... I think", to "even though you have a valid confirmation number, we can't seem to find you...what's your name again?...". Oh yeah, then there's the "can I call you back in 25 mins while I check with my supervisor?"...that was hours ago...and now they are closed...how convenient! Apparently, they don't really want the money after all. I don't remember having this kind of trouble the last time I upgraded, and I'm beginning to wonder if they really have it all together. Maybe Carl can check on my order, too?

Carl, while we have your attention. I upgraded from S3PE to S5PE although S5 was actually a new purchase as I had moved to Japan and left most things at home. Anyway I have been extremely happy with Sonar 5. I have had one or two crashes from repeatedly dragging midi files into Sonar to open them, and I don't really care about that. Everything has worked faultlessly. I wish I was this happy with most things I purchased. I am a computer programmer and absolutely hate the onerous copy protection on many software. I particularly hate Native Instruments "you have to get our permission to use the software you just bought" (I will never buy from them again). I know Sonar 5PE will work forever if I choose not to upgrade, even if I have to upgrade my computer. This is a major reason why I have continued to support Cakewalk, that and it's really good stuff, and the great manual, and the great forum. It seems to mirror the respect Cakewalk has for it's customers. I have decided to buy BFD for the same reason. Anyone still complaining about this free upgrade should think more carefully. This is protecting new customers from buying old software. Imagine if you bought Sonar5 and a week later Sonar6 came out? There will still be old stock of Sonar 5 lying around for quite awhile but the new customers know they are buying the latest software Brett

Thanks for the suggestion, (oh, and thanks for noticing the OS, best $100 I ever spent) I have tried e-mails, and calls, and even had to give my CC# again over the phone(they said there was some screwup in the web-store), and was told an immediate e-mail would be sent...none arrived (even after confirming my e-mail address). Hey Carl, Your marketing is great! I have even continued to receive upgrade offers....but your sales department doesn't seem to want to sell. Whats up with that? If I treated my customers with non-responses like that, I would soon be out of business.

Thanks for the encouragement Man, I know it'll probably come out alright, but the constant "we're all over this" dribble from sales, but no action, is really getting me down. I love the product, there's no doubt, but as "Pattste" over in the "WARNING:Cakewalk Online Store" thread just put it, " I WANT to upgrade, but I don't NEED to upgrade". There are other things that I could have spent on...but the offer deal was just too tantalizing. HavenLane
