I think it's about 50/50 CW and the Mac enthusiasts. Cakewalk made a nice glossy announcement - a new direction, three spotlights Sonar4You, Sonar4Life and yes, Sonar4Mac. Putting that last one on equal footing with the others was probably a mistake. At the same time, people who were already anxious to see Sonar on Mac got a bit carried away, especially those who bought into the lifetime deal banking on a total native port to Mac, because regardless of the difference between an alpha and a prototype, a full port of Platinum and continued development on Mac were never promised.

Brad Russell That's like promising your kids a trip to Disney World, realizing you don't have the money, and then saying, "Hey, but I rebuilt the carborator in that 57 Chevy that everybody loves, and then I built a great tree fort for the next door neighbor's kids."
Building a tree fort for the next door neighbors kid ? Im not even sure how you came to that logic. your trying to say Cakewalk used resources on something other than their customers ? at least this is what I gather from this bizarre comment referencing the neighbors kid. So what are those resources Cakewalk gave to someone else ? Or do you mean Cakewalk built a tree fort for its actual user base (you know the ones who use PC). Is that the neighbors kid ? The whole user base.. LOL.

With all due respect, Bapu, I don't think this thread was intended for people who are happy with and sticking with Windows PC's to run Sonar on. It was intended for former or potential Sonar users currently using Macs, or for people considering changing platform and was curious about running Sonar on MacOS. This thread derailed when someone said something along the lines of: "Mac sucks, why do you use s**t and HA HA HAAAAA, you failed, your computer doesn't work" and so forth, one time too many. No wonder people get a little defensive. And of course some folks will be more disapointed and less forgiving than others. And some may be very vocal about it. The first pages of this thread, however, is a really good read. I learned a lot about the project and some philosophies about software programming. Nothing wrong there, it was going fine for a while. You had your fun in some posts. They didn't contribute to the discussion. Neither did some of the other posts. However, NO one tried to convert anyone over to Macs. It was rather the oposite after a while. No hard feelings here, though. Just leave it at that and let ex-Sonar/current Mac users have this thread to be a little dissapointed that Sonar isn't coming to their platform of choice.

For me, I don't have any useful opinion on the matter. However, I use a PC at home and Mac for work. The latter is company-chosen. My only wish was that I could mix/edit on the Mac while mobile and simply copy the session/project information over to Windows.

Personally I have no problems with the "integrity" of the company. Did they "jump the gun" announcing a Mac version of SONAR? Well duh! They've admitted as much(at least I think they have), can we please move along? "There is nothing to see here"... T ps: Close the thread.

I don't understand the Mac vs. PC "discussions" in relationship to CW decision. CW "only" stated that they concentrate the development for Sonar on Win. Nothing else. So, from another point of view, CW isn't able to port because the code is too cluttered ;) e.g. the dependencies between the software layers aren't structured (enough). And as a very provocative postulate ... the meter must know that the audio engine is running on Windows ;) Or in other words, the technical guilt is too high. Maybe an architecture aspect.

You have a valid point. Of course, Cakewalk should make it's existing user base the priority. To your point, I was referring to the subject of the announcement. They were addressing a group of people who were anxiously awaiting an alpha version that had been announced. I was merely pointing out that, from my perspective, the content of the last week's announcement could have addressed the supposed target audience more effectively. That's it. BTW, I am a Cakewalk customer. I'm just not currently using the products I purchased... thousands of dollars worth of products. So, I don't exactly see myself as someone outside the Cakewalk customer base. That's why I still come to this forum. I've always enjoyed the community here. In that spirt, I don't see any reason my voice shouldn't be heard.

I think Cakewalk made a valiant attempt to go this route. When we talk about priority customer base, potentially new customers are also priority. Expanding the market share is important to success. That's probably why CW offered us existing users a Lifetime of updates--so we may not feel as owed something at all times, and not in a disrespectful way. Nobody complained about it, so it was a win for us users.
When we consider Mac users, we all know PT has the market cornered in DAW's, and a vast majority of their customers use Mac's (PT is not made for Windows, I'm here to say; not a friendly relationship at all). But consider that nearly every major studio and many of the music creators love macs, that was a great thing to consider, especially considering most, if not all other DAW's run on a mac.
I applaud the openness of CW to the reality of this idea and the retraction of the effort, a welcome honesty of the company. That speaks volumes of their integrity. Will we see a version of Sonar on a mac again? Perhaps. But knowing the current alpha was a mere virtualization of a Windows-based software to be made accessible on a Mac might have really just frustrated these Mac users in lack of true performance. The third-party involved who believes this is not something of concern, should be ashamed if they weren't up-front about the performance hit. After all, for software under such huge demands you don't just port code. It needs to be native to be fully appreciated.

There were some comments about how using Codeweavers was misleading, but my understanding is that the concept of starting off with translation and then replacing parts of the code until the program is fully native is fairly common. (IIRC that's what's happening with FL Studio's Mac version.)

Sorry, but I have to disagree here: Protools has been quite a nightmare on MacOS lately, significantly worse than on Windows. Example: a close friend of mine, who knows what a Windows evangelist I am BTW, called ME for tech support after the 'experts' couldn't get his brand new $3000 iMac with brand new interface and the newest Protools to work properly! Paying maximum dollar, nothing but problems! In Europe, where folks are less susceptible to the smoke screen of marketing that Apple has so successfully employed stateside, more and more studios are switching to Windows to run PT. R

That sounds reasonable. A full "port" of code across platforms is not a simple task. In this case it probably requires moving a shedload of Cakewalk C++ code that has been custom tuned to the Windows libraries and APIs. A code port would require re-compiling the C++ code in the native MacOSX environment. That means that a program which is very efficient on Windows and is tightly wrapped around the Windows environment, using available Windows code libraries for its audio engine, etc., will need substitutes for the missing modules. Doh!!! I imagine the audio engine would need a complete re-write and many hours of tuning to work acceptably on the Mac audio system. Not to mention graphics and screen widgets. But since I am a Windows user, I am hopeful that this energy will now be spent on ripple edit, chord track, and staff view!!!

Well is this a copy of the words uttered?...."CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT" Of the Alpha state shown us when asking for more cow feed?... And I was not impressed when it was anounced...Life time updates was a confused Uttering state of affairs...If I had the software paid for since 1x to the latest paid already and not getting it going much more than ...IFFY performance, and some lost stuff, of no real importance, But...That should not occur....And then some other issues opening some projects....Also had issues , of old vs Newer...And that, with lost audio drivers when opening win 7 -8.1. And then (here with said below PC) because the other was not enough to do the job?... Ok..And paid the asking for, Mac hopeful...or other OS, or a making of one....Also asking CW OP of, If support would be given remotely for...if so having issues. All good Ideas PUT FORTH BEFORE PAYING FOR WHAT WAS ASSUMED, AND CONTORTED BY WORDS...AND SOME CAN BE DECEIVED BY MEANINGS OF WORDS IF USED A CERTAIN WAY.....MARKETING HAS IT'S OWN LAWS?..OR NO LAWS ONCE BOUGHT AND CLICKING OK TO INSTALL....Before making any payment for life time updates, to continue development on MAC OR OTHER OS OTHER THAN <MS WINDOWS> -CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT ON MAC FOR LIFE.....IS IMPLIED.?...I CAN TWIST IT TO MEAN, OR IT IS AS WAS INTENDED MEANT?.......SEE THE OTHER SIDE OF ZERO'S PERSPECTIVE ON MEANING?....WELL I DO! IT IS SO CONVOLUTED....IT COULD MEAN ANYTHING WITH LIFE TIME UPDATES ADDED TO..AND IN OF SAME POST MANY IDEAS...AND MANY STATEMENTS...PAID FOR LIFE...IN ONE PAYMENT FOR. Now I can say...I was assuming, But I know what I asked in that OP of those life time updates asked for we give towards....THAT IDEAL...; ) winking at the hopeful of something better than what was in plain sight here on my PC with to want a bug fix asap....And if MS windows is making a new os...we all know how long it will take to get that gelling with all devices, as it is always some bug hunt and driver update ever since ever was MS OS...and I have not played with many...Gem, TOS, and DOS...mainly...BEOS was in development for MUSIC APPs...and it was bought out ....So development ended for, But they did release a BATA...and a CD os Kind of trial. I think I still have that stuff somewhere in my book shelf in the vault of my libraries. Any hoot....That is my interpretation of That first word uttered about LIFE TIME and MAC being in ONE Post I replied to. Well./. I did get remote viewing by Micheal The CW Tech, and Phone replies and contact was given me, with no resolves, as the system was not working proper on win 10 at all with any daw because of driver mayhem.....So, hope is sort of shown of support could be by them CW people..AS was done, is done? Try to stay on line...."They never Promised"...it would be fixed or bug free either, on any platform os!...as life time updates may never see a fix. Just saying it like I see it , if I stand in your mindset of perspective batted back! cheers.\\Grace still lives!

Have you really tried the version they have published (I can not since I do not have Mac)? I mean does it really performs "much better" on Windows? Sonar is slower under Linux then on Windows, but with best settings it works reasonable. And that it just running normal X2, without any tweaks. The emulation is not the same as let say for running DOS or Anroid apps. Nor it is as in virtual machine (while modern hardware is optimized for virtualization, there is still significant in some operations penalty). It is more like a BitBridge thing (running 32bit VST inside 64bit host), they have to "translate" calls "on the fly" and for most operations it is like translating "SetParameter" into "ParameterSet". I mean all OSes are not developed by aliens, they provide very similar set of functions and just name them differently.

Yah Sorry... Life time updates and development, continued means...On all Platforms...for Life...Life is not software, nor pc computer, or other machine or device. Life time...is a odd word used. And it means they will be fixing it for life of....Something living....And no promises of any bug fixes for some...and yet, it is dependent on OS....so, they cannot claim much or mud...In any aspect or reason! Do not be confused.....Words...mean nothing but to, in so called asking for per payment in lue of...a event claimed by one...when so many variables are in third party ...And OS being with. So both sides can confess....The life time of a living entity.....Knowing what LIFE TIME means! And the word LIFE> Sir. Hope it clears up the . CW never Promised fix at all on both Platforms..."Promises mean nothing"...in advert law of the cash cow....Did you not read into the books I wrote on that OP of Life time updates? Nope...because some cannot stay in focus of my words....Seems. But they were there....Now they are not. So,...hope the support is remote for all....in support for gained! And if support as such I asked be,...And they do that...Well that is a comfort to some....but not the fix some need...if it is OS related most if not all the bugs....Then, it is not up to cakewalk to solve them, if the MS OS is not accessible to be nibbled or nudged into the Kernel or the shell..By their own ULA statements. CW has theirs also. So, when you say they never Promised MAC version full rewritten....They never Promise anything to anyone of any upholding ....if LIFE TIME TO FIX IT IS STATED WILL BE...... I can turn words...Just like they can....For that is assumed?...or meant?....well they can take it liken...."We are not going to continue working on X"....here is what we had going in, and it is what we had when shown under development?...or was it already developed but not fully written for Mac..tease...THEN Sorry!...That is the east wind way, blowing wind in the faces of...lazy or lost interests to do. And they can do this ...without any other words, just put it all on hold for a while...And make em wait, and wait, and wait...Noted......And so can we all.....Sorry CW, and Sorry to you....Line upon line....Les....still they chime in.... I am sorry, I do not understand, nor can read, what you mean Les. And I know why Sanderexpander! Some cannot twist it to a positive or negative ...Grace is living in the right hand of time!. Sorry! Sanderxpander I know you quoted me but I have no idea what you mean, sorry.
Don't worry, no one ever knows what he means... just forum clogging rambling.
I normally read his posts and sometimes I even think I understand the meaning (at least partially). But just imagine you are working as phone support and he is calling...

Anderton There were some comments about how using Codeweavers was misleading, but my understanding is that the concept of starting off with translation and then replacing parts of the code until the program is fully native is fairly common. (IIRC that's what's happening with FL Studio's Mac version.)
Yeah, that's what I was hoping to have understood. I wouldn't have expected the solution was to keep it an emulation for the most part, but I've seen that happen before in another industry and it was a colossal failure. Macs in general, unless you get the Apple wastebasket are not the best performing machines. Thanks for the clarification.

(IIRC that's what's happening with FL Studio's Mac version.) I think it was misleading by omission. Saying that this was the 'real deal' 'Sonar running on a Mac' 'and not using any Bootcamp Trick' leads you to believe it's native. Well, if Cakewalk had continued down this path, eventually (accent on "eventually") it would have become more and more native. So calling it an emulation or calling it native would be equally incorrect. Kind of reminds me of Vista in a way. Microsoft kept doing updates to it and after a while, it essentially became Windows 7 even though it still said it was Vista. It's also important to note that this is not the same world as trying to emulate Windows Intel on a Mac PPC machine. The Intel-to-Intel element makes life easier. Why would somebody want an emulation when they could have Sonar with Bootcamp that performs much better? To be able to access the Mac parts of the computer (files etc.). Bootcamp turns your Mac into a PC, so anything that's "pure Mac" doesn't exist. Also again if Cakewalk had pursued this, it would have become more native over time, whereas that wouldn't happen under bootcamp.

My guess is not too many people are interested in it after hearing that it's Sonar Home Studio and a "Windows-to-Mac translator" version and that the "prototype" is the "end of the line for SONAR on the Mac" which I understand means no further development. So what's the point really? My interest was initially sparked by the idea of being able to natively run Sonar on Mac to open 15 years or so of Sonar projects rather than having to export the Sonar projects as OMF. But in reality Sonar would have to up it's game considerably for me to be interested. There are so many things in Logic that work good where Sonar just had some problems. In all fairness to Cakewalk the last version I used was Sonar 7. But I do check out Cakewalk to see what they've been up to. As far as comparing it to GarageBand it's really not a comparison when GarageBand runs on iOS very nicely. I've completed many songs just using an iPhone. And these songs open up in either GarageBand or Logic on Mac. Not sure about the Sonar Home Studio for Mac prototype, but GarageBand offers a pretty extensive library of plugins and instruments.

I downloaded and tried it, but it wouldn't run on my Mac. It errors out as damaged or incomplete.
