After all... "the Cake is a lie"... :P

(some gamers here maybe will understand)

Rest assured, there is no danger of Sonar's malfunction prior to its victory candescence.

So please tell me will I be still charged for the monthly subscription that is on autopayments? Please explain what will happen to this. Thanks

I was 6 months into my rent to buy plan and just received an email stating "We have recently canceled the following subscription...To learn more about the status of your account, contact Cakewalk, Inc. at 617-423-9004 or visit: https://findmyorder.com/store/cakewalk/help"
That page has buttons to purchase Sonar!
I then opened Splat and it is now a demo.
What a bummer...I would rant but I guess it wouldn't make a difference.

Edit: it seems to me it would be in Gibson's best interest to offer rent to buyers the option to pay off the balance and keep their most recent version...dammit!

Sonar should be totally unlocked for you right now at the last current version. I still had months left on my current 12 month cycle and my account is showing fully owned.... Something is not working correctly for you...

Pheeew...man I sure hope that's the case...it does seem like the right thing to do...or at least do what I mentioned above and let me pay the balance to keep it.

Help needed!

I didn't download three positions from my command center previously (to save disk space):

- Loopmasters Content Collection  (latest version 2.0.0.2)
- Sample Magic Content Collection  (latest version 1.0.0.8)
- X-MiX Content Collection  (latest version 1.0.0.8)

they show in the left side menu in my SONAR Platinum submenu but they're not possible to download (install) anymore!

Anybody care to support me with your downloaded installation files, pleeeaase?? You can find it in your command center Settings > Paths folder. Please PM me for my email. If the files are huge you can send via wetransfer com. Looking forward to hear from a good soul.

So much for lifetime subscriptions.  How is it a company already in deep debt buys Cakewalk and then orchestrates a huge money grab with too good to be true "Lifetime updates".  Software programming takes man hours and man hours cost money.  No company in it's right mind would charge a one time fee for something that has on going expenditures as a long term profit plan.

I Guarantee there was a meeting where the Cakewalk higher ups sat with the Gibson bean counters and discussed:

..."How many users regularly buy annual updates?...What percentage of them and the non frequent upgrading users do you think would pay for a "onetime paid Lifetime update scheme?"  How much revenue could we generate with this event and to you corporate lawyers over there in the corner, how long would we have to deliver the monthly updates before folding the company without risk of being sued for this fraud we are about to perpetrate?"

I new this was a money grab when it happened and said so.  I new this was coming and so did the high up Cakewalk executives.  We have all been scammed by this organization.  I will never again buy another Gibson product as long as I live and I will likewise boycott any company where the Cakewalk executives land.  All that remains now is to pick a new DAW.  Those of you who think the servers will remain on line for long should think again.

Check my posts and you'll see I predicted this.  I worked as an executive in the corporate world for almost 20 years and I've been in the meetings where these dastardly plans were hatched by the bean counters against the objections of those of us with morals and ethics.  That is why I left the corporate world.  It doesn't take a prophet to step in horse crap and tell everyone it's horse crap.  Once one has seen this kind of human behavior it's not hard to recognize it in the future.
And you know what else, these big corporations always do this right before Christmas.  Merry Christmas furloughed staff.
The only consolation is that these heathens pulling this stunt who think they're saving their own jobs will be in the soup line eventually themselves soon.

I'm may be reaching here, but assuming Cakewalk and/or its products are unable to be sold and there is no use for the technology behind Sonar in other areas, is there any chance that Sonar could be made open source?

I wouldn't mind seeing what the community could do by making a fork or two of the code...

The problem here is:

a). Software patents. They can be worth a lot of money, so it's not likely Gibson is that giving away for free. If Gibson can license some of the techniques used in Sonar, they can generate a (small or big) steady income, so it would be counterproductive to give that away.

b). Licensed closed software "blobs" in the main code, that cannot be open sourced because they are not property of Cakewalk/Gibson. And without those parts an "open" version of Sonar could very well be completely unusable.

As much I would like to see an open sourced version of Sonar (especially since I mainly use Linux, and porting Sonar would be great), I do not see that happening.

The same goes for a "resurrection" of Sonar as commercial DAW. Now it has lost most of it's user base (let's not fool ourselves here), and the developers are probably already very busy finding a new job (or maybe are already hired), I think chances of a "restart" are very slim. Especially if you take into account that Gibson probably already tried to sell Sonar, and obviously without success. Maybe parts of Sonar will pop up here and there (see part a. above), but I guess it's really the end of the line for Sonar as DAW.

Keep in mind that this is only a personal opinion, and maybe I am wrong. But that's how I see it at this moment.

The problem is going to be the next version of Windows.  When it does one of those sneaky forced updates, there will be no further development by Cakewalk, that's when things will begin to fall apart.

something I started 15 years ago... a text file on my desktop where I log in every serial number and registration code or whatever when I buy it.  If I sell or upgrade it then I delete it from the file. Then every few months I email it to myself so it's in uber-land...

This is not going to happen.
Adobe already has Audition which fulfills their needs and SONAR does not fit at all in Creative Cloud catalog.
If SONAR went to Adobe: would Cakewalk users accept Adobe's subscription model? -No.

I would accept adobe's subscription model.  I use it now.  One does not get something for nothing.  Software and software upkeep costs money.  That is one of the lessons of this whole debacle.  If Sonar goes somewhere else - it is worth paying X$ a month to keep it maintained and keep the staff properly paid.

Is this a classic case of the Big Corporation agenda won out over the free-thinking smaller guy, I wonder?
Either way, the Bakers have made something special over the years - I thank you guys sincerely.

The lifetime of updates and add-ons all for a one off payment, should have raised the alarm. Gibson's offer was all smoke and mirrors - a desperate grab for cash by Gibson.
I have seen this topic all over music forums and have seen comments by both users and non-users all vowing not to buy another Gibson product. The owners of Gibson have signed their own corporate death warrant.
