sharke With regards to everyone who paid for lifetime updates, is there any grounds for a class action lawsuit against Gibson?
Shouldn't think so. A company that is no longer trading cannot be sued for failing to develop a product. In this scenario, the 'lifetime' would be deemed applicable to Cakewalk's, not your own.

A long long time ago I was working in a true multi deck studio and the owner acquired a Kong M1. He had a Commodore 64 ( mostly because these were an inexpensive investment for a new-to-digital world) and asked me what to use for sequencing. TwelveTone systems Cakewalk was the answer.
Now, a company that tries to sell $4000 guitars with a richlite fretboard says Cakewalk is no longer relevant, so they can support Phillips-the richlite of audio interfaces.
I understand the millennial manbun wants bleeps, blips and boom boom boom, and that’s perfectly fine, there are an abundance of DAWs for that. And I also understand supporting an old Fattysaurus like me, who is used to and grew up with multitrack studio setups, won’t prevent extinction. But jeezuz at least wait until after the Holidays you heartless sons of ****es.
I agree, supplying us with all install files for all purchased products like Camel Audio’s Alchemy did when they swore aliegence to Apple’s Dark Helmet would be great. That way, three years from now when grown ups are looking for a good windows DAW, and I finally upgrade my computer, I will still have an excuse to keep my p.o.s. dell. The computer and Sonar will be the new Fairlight, a source of confusing wonderment for button based loopsters who can’t play an instrument, but geee, aren’t the lights cool looking!
My respect to all the individuals who improved and innovated the best Windows DAW in the the market.
AF
And may Gibson’s stocking be filled with richlite.

this ^^ I owned Opcode products back in the 90's as well I should have bailed when I found out that Gibson bought Cake but I love Sonar and purchased the "lifetime" updates as well. I'm a guitar player - I will NEVER buy a Gibson product. -Jim

With this thread running like a wildfire (hmmm a manmade one at that...), I'm glad I read it from the beginning. It allowed me to feel pissed off, depressed, panicky and then finally .....calm. Now what? Such a crappy time for the Bakers to get the news. I'm sure they'll bounce back and I certainly appreciate all their work that I've enjoyed, profited by and used since 2000. Not being the computer whiz type, I am wondering, if I should take my main studio desktop offline and keep MS from screwing with SPLAT? Is this the most viable option at the moment? If SPLAT stops working, can I use Sonar X2 without servers? I still have Sonar 5.2 PE and a Pentium 4.... I've got Mixbus 4 and Studio One 2 (Artist I think)but Sonar is "home" and has been for a long time. I'd rather not jump ship and don't have the funds at the moment, anyway. The more suggestions on how to save projects and/or keep my SPLAT4Life (?!) going, the better. Like serial numbers? I've been using CCC since it started. Should I be collecting ......?? what? It started out as a pretty nice November day........ Michael

Looks like Gibson may be done first. They're already selling off everything they can. Seems like further evidence that, as I suggested earlier, Gibson tried and failed to find a buyer for Cakewalk. Money quote: ...Nashville-based guitar maker and music lifestyles company Gibson has been dogged by financial troubles in recent years, according to credit rating agencies. In August, Moody's Investors Service downgraded Gibson's corporate family and probability of default ratings and the company's senior secured notes, citing concern with its weak operating performance, liquidity pressure from approaching maturities and the view that Gibson's capital structure is unsustainable.

fitzj The decision was made to better align with the company’s acquisition strategy that is heavily focused on growth in the global consumer electronics audio business under the Philips brand.
I realize you are quoting the original statement here fitz, but I must ask for anyone who might know. So does this mean Philips is running the show and making the call on this? Or does this mean Philips will be taking over the brand? Sounds like Gibson has heavily invested itself in a bunch of electronic parts that they are going to have to scrap unless they have the software technology to make it viable as a selling platform to the general public and they decided to make that Sonar/Cakewalk technology and the only way you may be able to get it is by buying their electronics Perhaps? Oh well, I should probably put a tin hat on after that comment. But I have no idea. Just theorizing. You feel really bad when your musical heroes die, you know people like Hendrix, Curt Cobain, Elvis, Chuck Berry, and other's along those lines. But when your Platform for creating music dies, I for one can't help but say : "Whoever made money or is making money off of the demise of this software must be a real special type of greedy person, they will get theirs in the end, because you don't do that much harm to others without eventually karma coming back to bite you in the end". As for Gibson, they've been selling these knockoff Epiphone's for years, I bought one two years ago and had to repair the plugin connection myself. Why? Because I didn't want to go through all the paperwork and EXTRA MONEY it would have cost me to send it back to a company where I might get it back even more damaged than it was to begin with. I am forever gonna be a FENDER and STRAT player from here on out. LOL! Knowing my luck, they'll get bought out and cancelled.......... Oh well. I don't blame anyone here for being ticked off, upset and left with the feeling that their best friend just passed away. Believe me when I say I feel your pain. You are not alone!

No, Philips sold their consumer electronics division to Gibson. Gibson also own Onkyo. I saw a Gibson sports armband at newegg. Just put "gibson philips" into your favorite search engine and see what comes up.

...if a purchase is in the wings, [I hope] it will happen soon before they disperse..
1.) Tips on EZ xfer would be darned handy. 2.) As has been mentioned here already, pulling the plug like this damages the value of the brand (SONAR, I mean), not to mention credibility. If it was going to be a hard to sell before today, it might be a big dead turkey now, especially with a prospective buyer wondering if s/he's going to be saddled with a bunch of freeloaders (like me) wanting their "lifetime" subscriptions to remain in effect. Cakewalk is the only DAW I've ever owned, but I'm assuming we're at the end of the road.

I felt like this would happen a while back when Roland sold to Gibson and the warning went out from a lot of users that Gibson had a reputation for buying companies that had good products and killing them off. When the "Free Updates for Life" came out, it raised an eyebrow. How can a company continue to exist on a product that has been purchased and won't need to be replaced or updated for a decade? Where is the revenue going to come to keep the company afloat? Well, it was great while it lasted. I loved Sonar Platinum and will continue for a while with it. But as Craig said, "at least Sonar will keep running until i get up to speed on something else". That's what I'm going to do also. Going to go to Cubase. I was so impressed over the years at how good the tech support team was. Fast response, courteous, helpful. Never an attitude. Gibson takes over and a after a while you can't call them and get someone. I got an email from tech a little over a week ago. They responded to a technical problem I requested almost 2 months earlier. When I got the news today, I wasn't surprised. And by the way, I never begrudged the money for updates to Sonar. Was well worth the investment. I hope the best for the Cakewalk team. Hope they will get great jobs quick.

jpetersen So it seems Gibson really did buy Philips consumer electronics. http://www.gibson.com/News-Lifestyle/News/en-us/Gibson-Brands-to-Acquire-WOOX-Innovations.aspx Hifi, home video, radios, batteries... I fail to see any synergy at all. How totally bizarre.
Seems Gibson has been on a bottom-feeding acquisition strategy. Basically, buying brands and and financing them on the expectation that they can leverage lower paid employees and/or product costs. Its no wonder the money people downgraded them. Its hollowing out a business to pay for the business.

Sad news. Very sad. Thanks bakers, and all the best to you all.
That being said, when I bought the lifetime subscription it was on the fact that sonar would keep working even if a regular subscriber decides to stop his subscription. Did not occurred to me that you still need the server up to activate it.
