Brandon! Long time no see... nice to see you but drag that it's under these circumstances as it were. What a crappy turn of events. Still... hope you're well! (Sounds like it!)

The decision was made to better align with the company’s acquisition strategy that is heavily focused on growth in the global consumer electronics audio business under the Philips brand.
So why the hell did you buy this company in the first place get loads of members who were with cakewalk since the 90's take their money with a now worthless lifetime guarantee for as soon as  the servers hosting the authorisations stop working we are all left with useless software. I raised concerns about this when Gibson took over and we were all assured that Cakewalk was safe under the Gibson brand. Gibson call Noel now and get him to write code where we don't require online authorisations going forward. We paid for this software so it's rightfully ours now. It's the least Gibson can do for the loyal customers and user of Cakewalk products. Closing it down is not an option or else sell it to the Cakewalk management for $1.

This is truly wretched. Cakewalk devs are some of the smartest, nicest, most knowledgable people in the business. There's no doubt they'll do well wherever they go from here (Great C++ devs aren't exactly a dime a dozen these days).

I don't know what "acquisition strategy" Gibson is referring to, but it seems to be an oxymoron. Judging from the recent non-starter song-writing iToy release and the non-port Mac OS port of Sonar, I'm guessing Gibson's goal was to have a cross-platform DAW solution to synergize with their pro audio brands. But if this guess is correct, it represents an epic failure of due diligence on Gibson's part.

I wouldn't bet my life on Microsoft buying Cakewalk even at a firesale price. Microsoft's core business today is cloud services. Its only creative applications are basically exhibitions of these cloud services. There's a better chance of Paul Allen buying the company, as he's into music and was the founder of Submersible, which made drum loop library products. :D In all seriousness, this announcement most likely indicates that attempts to sell off the Cakewalk division have already failed. Gibson would not have otherwise devalued the product with an announcement such as this.

I join Craig in recommending Studio One. It's been a DAW where I've been spending most of my music production time, and it gets a lot of things right. There's a Black Friday 50% off sale on it going on now.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I am very grateful to Cakewalk for having been there. For all I learned about arranging, producing, and mixing music on its products and at its events. For all I learned about the process of building consumer software in my two long-ago years as a beta tester. For the excitement in trying out the next great new feature, the next new instrument, the next update.

Thank you!

If SONAR could somehow get open sourced I'd happily contribute to the effort!

Aren't there licensing issues around the VST format that would prevent that from happening?

Brandon Ryan [Roland]
This is just devastating news. Cakewalk and SONAR have been so intertwined with my life for so long, it's hard to imagine. I met my wife on a Cakewalk business trip, eventually leading to a family with two beautiful children. I've spent countless hours in SONAR, filling proverbial buckets of creative blood sweat and tears, over the years. I'm sad for all the users (myself included) around the world that have made their musical homes in Cakewalk and SONAR over multiple decades - hell, since the last millennium. And I'm so deeply sorry for all my dear friends and former colleagues at the Bakery. The perception that the Cakewalk crew are talented, hardworking, earnest people who do this out of love as much as livelihood is exactly right. I can attest to that personally.

It is so good to see you here. Thank you for posting your thoughts about this. I have missed you. It is very bad news for all of us but its considerably worse for those with CW. I see all the very hard work they and you have put in through the years as being discarded with no regard for the huge talents the people of CW brought with them.

I was wondering for awhile how much saturation the DAW market could take. There are simply too many DAWs for the limited number of potential users. This situation seems due to forces beyond CW's control and the effort has gone nowhere.

As difficult as it seems I was thinking for awhile now if CW would find it harder to continue. It has been such a cutting edge program for so long.
I am so sorry that it is this news that brings you back. I wish it were for much nicer reasons.

Best

This is horrendous news. I'm sorry for all the developers who put their hearts and souls into this product.  I guess I should have known when you offered lifetime updates that the lifetime would not be long.

Please sell it to someone, because it's a great product, but it will soon be outdated. I guess I should have gone with ProTools. ARGGGHHHH! I hate to be selfish about this, and I know people are losing their jobs, but I've put many thousands of dollars into this product which will soon be in the dustbin of software history. Cakewalk, I'm blaming you for the hangover I'm going to have tomorrow morning......

I'd love to see Noel, Lance and a few other Cakewalk Staffers start a new company building a DAW similar to Sonar.
Call it Radar and build it better than anything else out there.

I know I'd be a willing customer for such an effort.

I figured things were going down hill when Craig quit, even back when it was bought out by Gibson Brands it didn't sound too promising. Big loss for those of who've invested a lot of money and time in Sonar over the years, and no future to look forward to, and a lot work now learning, and transferring music over to, a more sustainable DAW supplier's product.
Ill refrain from any corporate insults here although Im feeling inspired to write some punk rock songs to that end, never thought I'd become a Pro-Tools geek, hey that's a good starting line, LOL

Heartwarming to see Ron and Brandon chime in - always nice to see you guys. Terrible turn of events, I'm pretty heartbroken by it all, and I can only imagine what it's like for all the Bakers who had the rug pulled out from under them.

I really hope someone can salvage this. I honestly think I got my money's worth out of the lifetime subscription, but I'd love to see development continue somehow.

So sorry for anyone losing a job this time of year. Most of the staff have some great skills for this modern economy. Maybe it will turn into a great opportunity for them.

It looks like Studio One Professional is the closest alternative? I was looking to buy Komplete Ultimate this week but now I may have to change BF buying plans.

Any advice on making transition to Studio or another DAW?

How stupid.  Why buy an established industry-leading audio software company with thousands of loyal customers just to kill it?  At least have the decency to try to sell it and keep it going. I'll think twice about buying anything from Gibson or any of its subsidiaries ever again as a result of this.

Didn't even give me a year!
I've put big money into effects and plugins...and the wasted learning curve!!!
Cowards couldn't bring themselves to tell us a year ago. Let's suck every penny out of every last customer we can, THEN we'll pull the plug, once they think they got a great deal.

Re: Cakewalk Announcement 2017/11/21 22:39:11 (permalink)
So by lifetime updates, you meant Cakewalk's lifetime?

Paying extra for that turns out to be 17 months?  And while you're saying here that your servers will be open and our software will be available to us but what guarantee is there for that at this point?

It's not that my life is altered because of this money, but it seems to me that Gibson had this planned long ago and was trying to bilk cash out of people until the death knell rang.  It's odd that Cakewalk isn't a viable enough entity to be sold or merged with another brand as well.  Why?

I like SONAR now that I've sorted it out and not only have I bought it as outlined above, I also (in good faith) bought Rapture Pro, Z3ta+ and all of the Pro Channel modules so if you're keeping score, I have a LOT invested in this platform.  If you shutter everything (after telling me I could NEVER sell my software BTW) I guess I'm just eff'd.  And yes, I've read the claims you will keep things working but *newsflash*, I don't believe you anymore.  Holy **** does this ever reek.

In any event, I would also like to thank the developers who gave us some really good software to use and the folks in this forum who have been helpful to me over the few years I've been here.  To Gibson brands, you suck.  Out loud.  In staticky monaural.  I think you cheated us and I'd wager a bunch (like this now worthless software you foisted on me) you knew way back when the ship was sinking and you bilked as many unsuspecting people as you could on your way to the bottom.  I've been in the business world far too long to think otherwise.

SONAR Platinum, Win7 Home Premium 64bit, Sweetwater Creation Station CS250v21 (Ivy Bridge Core i5 3.4Ghz CPU, 12GB DDR3/1600Mhz RAM, 500GB/1TB Seagate Barracuda system/audio drives, SATA 6.0, USB 3.0), M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB, 2x KRK Rokit 5's, Yamaha MO8

There are a number of less than wonderful options, i’m trying to figure the best one. I wrote sound on sound about what they want to do with the column, but said i at least wanted to do one more about how to transfer to other daws.

BTW other companies recognize Cakewalk has some serious talent. People like Ryan, Noel, Keith, Willy, Ben, and Bob will have no problems getting gigs so hopefully if a putchase is in the wings, it will happen soon before they disperse..

I do have to remind myself that at least Sonar will keep running until i get up to speed on something else. But i loved that program, it was my instrument just as much as a guitar. I feel kind of like I’ve been told guitar strings will no longer be made, so i should learn saxophone 🙂

A few thoughts:

1) Feel bad for the bakers, but like Craig said, there's a lot of talent there and I'm confident they'll land on their feet.

2) Gibson did the same thing with Opcode in the late '90s. I'm even more unhappy now.

3) I've literally got hundreds of these forum threads bookmarked. If this forum goes down, I'd lose so much incredible info. Not looking forward to saving all these pages as offline viewable HTML pages.

4). I wonder if Izotope would be a viable option to purchase Cakewalk. Both in/near Boston, the Dan Gonzalez connection (I believe), Izotope getting into recording with their Spire system, etc... I like to think it makes sense.

Did Gibson buy Philips?
Or did Philips buy Gibson? (In which case, it's Philips that's doing the acquiring).

panup
If this forum is closed, I could provide a new forum for the Cakewalk community with no cost to the users.

Panup, that's very generous of you, but the burden shouldn't fall entirely on one person -- like you said, it's a community.  Something like a crowdfund, I think, would be appropriate. I doubt we'd have any problem getting 100 people to pony up, say, $10 a year for the upkeep.  (The forum would be open to anyone, regardless of if they could pay or not).

Re: Cakewalk Announcement 2017/11/21 23:14:13 (permalink)
Bloody hell! This is absolutely devastating! I’m not a user any more - but that has NOTHING to do with cakewalk and Sonar.i have missed it everyday since I moved over to a different DAW. All the hours i’ve Spent with Sonar over the years pretty much made me do what I do and put me where I am today. Really sad news. I certainly hope someone buy the whole thing and let it live and evolve for decades to come. If not, it’s an absolute shame.

My most humble thanks to the Cakewalk team and also you users whom been a source of inspiration, techniques, laughter and friendship over the years.
