I'm hoping that Cakewalk staff will at this point be floating ideas to build a new DAW from scratch. Isn't that how Studio One and Bitwig got started - developers on the teams of other DAW's going off on their own? I'm sure Noel & co. must have felt frustrated and restricted at times by Sonar's ancient legacy - building off of old code, hemmed in by the fact that you can make changes to a DAW but not drastic changes. Maybe this is a chance for them to build the DAW they always wanted Sonar to be but couldn't quite get there on top of legacy code.

Wst3 is right. The true victims are staff. Cakewalk has always had a great staff, akways willing to lend a hand. At the end of the day we all got what we paid for. I'm bummed i won't be upgrading, but even my older version will give me years of use

Craig, can you go into the projects audio folder and load the track wav files into another DAW?  Kludgy I know but I think it can be done to salvage Cakewalk files/projects and migrate them to new systems.  I'm going to try that with Mixbus, since I've started using that recently.

With regards to everyone who paid for lifetime updates, is there any grounds for a class action lawsuit against Gibson?

It may be possible but there is likely a loophole in the agreements.

Plus, as the old saying goes, you can't squeeze blood from a turnip.

Unfortunately, the lifetime updates may also serve as a poison pill deterring anyone wanting to purchase Cakewalk. sigh

P.S. Sorry and a heartfelt good luck to all the CW employees that are getting hosed by this development.

So...what do we do about 20+ years worth of songs recorded in Sonar that we would like to finish, revisit, rework, update and all that?  Do other DAW's read Cakewalk work files?  Bundle files?

I can tell you that it's no problem to import sonar files into Reaper. I'm pretty sure it's possible with most, if not all DAWS.

Well of course your audio files are just wavs and you can import them into any audio program. The problem is when you have extremely large and complex projects which have dozens of synths, hundreds of effects and complex routing. There really is no alternative but to go through each project track by track, saving fx and synth presets and whatnot, making notes about routing and reconstructing the whole kit and kaboodle in the new DAW. Having reconstructed projects from scratch that got corrupted and went weird in Sonar, I can tell you it's an incredible time consuming task.

Wow that's hard news to dish out in the run up to Xmas. I feel for the staff at Cake who have been utterly shafted by Gibson. I've recently built a new studio laptop based around S Plat so this is doubly disappointing, but I'll keep using the software for as long as it remains functional in the hope it can be revived.

If the forum goes, I'll just say that it's been a privilege to share songs, tips and banter with you guys.

Best to all

The Best DAW out there is no longer out there... what a crappy turn of events.  seems a waste of money on Gibson's part to buy it and then kill it.    I was gonna buy a les paul but now I have to funnel my money into choosing another DAW... I think I'm gonna boycott Gibson... very disappointed Gibson!@!

Big shame. I started with Cakewalk 5 and stuck with Cakewalk, then Sonar until I switched to Mac in 2010. Then for various reasons I switched back to PC last year and decided to return to the latest version of Sonar. I was so pleased with how it had developed! I will stick with Sonar, but without updates there'll come a day when I'll be forced to find (and learn) something new

Re: Cakewalk Announcement 2017/11/21 21:25:19 (permalink)
Over the years I've probably spent $1,500 on upgrades to my DAW since starting with Cakewalk. I know that doesn't give me any leverage with Henry Juszkiewics. He'll do fine, even if I get burned. But I'm not in the studio business; I don't make money recording, and my budget for software, computers and musical equipment is right around zero. I'm already looking at other DAWs, but until today I was feeling pretty good about not having to spend another dime on my "lifetime" subscription to SONAR. I wouldn't know Gibson's CEO if I bumped into him at the NAMM show or someplace, and I'm not a violent person anyway, but if I were Juszkiewics I'd keep a low public profile for a while.

PS: Studio One Pro 3.5 is on sale right now. Sweetwater's price is US$200.

Can't whoever that it is take it home and get re-going on it?

I've been using Cakewalk since, uh, I think I got on-board right before audio was added to the mix, so that's Cakewalk 4.0 I think. Man, that's a long time, and I know SONAR pretty well, I'm not excited about learning another DAW (or purchasing it).

Re: Cakewalk Announcement 2017/11/21 21:41:26 (permalink)
I am shocked reading this announcement and still cannot believe it is not kind of 1 April joke...

Sonar has a really great potential to be main DAW at the market. POINT.

Just needed some work about polishing (bugs) and improvements to reach point when other DAW user would migrate to it...

It is at such level that decision to abandon cannot be concerned differently than - to be nice and polite for people - serious mistake...

So this is what is Gibson now... I think other companies which could ever consider to be sold would try to avod such buyer at all cost...

I feel very sorry for Cakewalk staff... But also I have no doubt they have plenty of offers from competitors whoa are now very thankful to Gibson to create opportunity to gain high skilled and experienced people... Knowledge is the biggest value. They will be pity of it...

It is unbelievable somebody could make decision to close such company which has so long tradition and history...

Regards,
Piotr

Hmmm. What I want to do is download all the installation files for SPLAT so I can reinstall it if need be. My DAW will become a non-internet machine, frozen in time so that no Windows update can kill it. Is there a way to access the program files?

Sounds like a great time to look deeper into Ableton.  Or FL Studio.

Imho those choices would be lower among the tiers if sonar replacements. Fine products but workflow for both is so different than sonar that it woukd be awkward. Even most people who use ( unless they are strictly hip-hop) these programs tend to use morw traditional DAWs too. FL and Ableton arw superior for beat making but clunky to the new user, particularly the acoustic musician, for mixing.

This is just devastating news. Cakewalk and SONAR have been so intertwined with my life for so long, it's hard to imagine. I met my wife on a Cakewalk business trip, eventually leading to a family with two beautiful children. I've spent countless hours in SONAR, filling proverbial buckets of creative blood sweat and tears, over the years. I'm sad for all the users (myself included) around the world that have made their musical homes in Cakewalk and SONAR over multiple decades - hell, since the last millennium. And I'm so deeply sorry for all my dear friends and former colleagues at the Bakery. The perception that the Cakewalk crew are talented, hardworking, earnest people who do this out of love as much as livelihood is exactly right. I can attest to that personally.
