Im just curious, did the op ever reply to this thread after the 4 posts he made at the very begining of the thread?

im sure he made his bosses over at PT very happy.

i can see him saying:

BMW, Audi, Chevy, Ford and others produce cars. Road and Track, Car and Driver and many other magazines pair them up against each other. I don't see any of them crying in the corner like Pus***s. Roland are big boys. If they can't handle the competition, then maybe they are in the wrong business. BTW I know they can because they have a top shelf product. I'm not sure some of the users can handle it though. In fact I'm convinced some of them can't.

Right, go do it on a nuetral forum, not a Sonar user support forum.

You don't need a BMW to get to the grocery store, but some people think they do. At least that's the myth that the BMW salesmen want them to believe.

Nope, just sick of hearing about how Pro Tools is the industry standard and how you're an azz if you don't have it.  That's pure sales propaganda and I ain't buying it.

I'm getting fabulous recordings with Sonar and don't need Pro Tools.

Wayne:

Nice to meet you, not sure if we've 'met' before - Sonar / Cakewalk user since the days of DOS.  I teach Sonar at a university here in Pittsburgh.

You'll have to get over the fact the Pro Tools is the industry standard - it has set the pace for the most employees downsized from an audio software company in any 20 months.  Pro Tools is the standard for the highest paid upgrades for the least amount of features of any audio product in history.  Pro Tools continues to set records for the largest losses in any digital audio workstation company's income statement.  And finally Pro Tools leads the industry in closed architecuture plug in design.  What is it about Pro Tools as an industry standard that you can't appreciate?  Don't you want to jump on that gravy train to a Grammy?  'cmon we all know that it's not if your song or music is great - it's whether you tracked, mixed and bounced it all in real time in Pro Tools.

Regarding whether we should discuss any DAW other than Sonar here is a matter of perspective - I understand yours.  To me I don't care if we talk about Sound Designer - I have learned more about Sonar and how much I appreciate it, since I have been using Pro Tools - it is amazing how valuable it is to use multiple products to broaden one's perspective.  Quite possibly you do as well, sorry If I missed that.

Loving making records lately - both in PT and Sonar.

-D

I have seen the light, the grown ups have spoken, I must have Pro Tools immediately, oh wait I already have Pro Tools  SE...now I'm on my way to get that Grammy !! Uh oh wait, it just crashed again... now it won't open, it says there's too many charaters for the dongle to work... ??WTF ?? I must go out and buy the latest version for it to work ?? It only costs about $300 more than Sonar, that's no problem, I'll put it on my credit card....no wait I can't do that I'm already maxed out....oh well that's the music business for you !!

Well, for the sake of clarity and to avoid misleading people, Digidesign hasn't owned Protools in a while so you are operating with an older version of Protools. I believe the title had something to do with a comparison between PT10 which is owned by Avid and Sonar X1.

you guys got to admire the guys dedication to sonar.
who cares about pro tools or uses them to teach what man.
the only good pro tools i know of are the ones in the major top studios accross the country.
pro tools HD.
recording in stellar hd quality with millions of dollars in production equipment.
thats why your university runs pro tools.
but its not the pro tools the big boys are running..the big boys have the big add ons.the hd quality.

sonar i believe gives me the best home recordingsemi proffessional recording studio options there is.
up and down.side to side.

is pro tools bad.
no its not.
is it better then sonar,no its not.
is it worse?
no.
each daw has their own thing.
this ageless fight over who has the best daw is a joke.

You nailed it for sure!

I could just only imagine what happened if you went to AVID forum instead posted threads about that SONAR X1 VS PRO Tools Sucks-thread's. Everyone would ask "why" you are here posting about SONAR or Cubase or what ever. The thread would be locked and member is banned! Go Back to your FORUM!!! So why should we tolarent the same in this or any other FORUMS on the Internet?

I don't know, but some that make this kinds of threads on the INTERNET on various FORUMS is surely paid and employees of AVID making holding on to a outdate, bad and overpriced product.

Well if you want to be perfectly clear, I did TRY to download PT10 trial version, but the download failed. So PT10 never even got set up on my computer, but now the trial period is over and I couldn't download it again if I wanted to. Every step of the way PT has been a pain in the neck for me. That's why I'm on Sonar, it works like a champ in comparison.

For more clarity, the older version of Pro Tools SE that I do have on my computer came with M-Audio's Fast Track USB interface which was recently purchased this year. So they are still handing them out.

Do whatever you want...it's like going to the grocery store and they are giving out samples of a product, you try it and it tastes like dog poo, are you going to buy the product ?? No of course not. What if they come to your house with more samples of the same product and tell you everybody in the neighborhood likes it. Then will you buy it ?? Not me !!

After extensive research, I have come to the following conclusion: Sonar is made by Cakewalk, and Pro Tools by Avid.

Nope !! The PT 10  download failed. PT SE crashes. PT Free kept crashing over and over. Can't get it to work, what am I supposed to do ??

When I decided I want a 32 bit recording program with dongles that crashes over and over again, I'll call ya.

Sooooo you really have no personal experience with the program. Well it all makes sense then. And BTW I've been railing against PT for years. I don't like their business model. If I had the money I'd probably be running Nuendo. I still think Sonar is the bees knees though and I'm glad I bought it.

Pro-Tools might go off the market soon.  It certainly isn't the standard it was yesterday, and with technology, "tomorrows seems to arrive in less than 24 hours."  Rhetorically speaking...

I've had plenty of experiences with the program...ALL BAD !!! and I do not like the idea of people pushing it on me by saying "Oh it's the indusrty standard, you're crazy if you don't buy it", as if I'm the crazy one for not buying it...I view that as a huge insult and am highly offended by this whole thread even being here on a Sonar user support forum. It shouldn't even be here !!!!!!!!!!

A Sonar vs ProTools thread in the Cakewalk forums seems to me like having a political or religious discussion at a party. It always ends up in a fight because someone gets thier panties all in a bundle.

last i looked.. i am doing both.. ProTools Instruments Tracks allow one to print midi information in real-time, with the option of audio playback, with real-time audio effects. no joke..

You said, "other stuff out there, was just as good."  So forget Pro-Tools for a sec...  And your choices become very narrow.  DP, Sonar, Cubuendo, Samplitude, Logic...   I'm talking about, "true audio work."  Slice and dice...   Now..  maybe I have left out a few I do not know about..  SAWstudio?  I have no idea what that does.  Studio One?  Haven't tried it, but heard its not up to par.

So..  Forget the big ones.  Because, "they are just as good."  But give the companies some credit..  For major production tools, you have less on the market than it may seem.

There are some great DAWs out there, or at least some I have seen people swear by; I call them, "boutique daws."  Podium, Mulab, Orion, Reaper ( this program is horrible.  I wish people would quit promoting it so much.  I really ought to sell my license.  but fortunately its cheap, and maybe I can use it for a coaster or something.  PM me if you know how I can do that. )

There are other tools out there, that are not exactly DAWs, but are DAWs..  Here you shall find, Reason ( although they are turning it into a big huge daw - which makes no sense. ), Renoise ( its a daw, but its basically a tracker --  I love this software, but if you don't know it, its hard to explain. ) FLStudio ( I do not think this does multi-track record or something.  I saw the thread on KVR. )  MAX/MSP ( yeah, its a daw, duh!  but its also like a computer language, or a synth or something.  actually, its not even a daw wtf? ) Bidule ( I dunno what this is, I've got no use for it.  Its GUI is pretty.  Actually, the GUI is way prettier than Sonar!  Cakewalk team take note.  More Bidule looking stuff plz.  Thanks.  :-)

To wrap this up, "generalizing," and claiming other stuff on the market is just as good.  Is a major blanket statement.  It works, if you sort of sequence synths via midi.  If you need to produce bands, vocalists, record live concerts, record the London Philharmonic, compose the next great Hollywood score, rip off the backstreet boys from your bedroom and hopefully wind up golfing full time by 40...   than you need Cubase, Pro-Tools, Sonar, DP, Logic...  or something.  Two of these are mac only.  1 of these is 32 bit.

Do the math

I had a dream the other night I was running Ableton Live on a laptop with a touchscreen. It was a little weird. Still gotta check the lite version that came with my interface.
